SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The CEO of a La Jolla-based financial services firm pleaded guilty Wednesday to defrauding shareholders, falsifying tax returns and operating an unlicensed money services business.David Nava, head of Surf Financial Group LLC, worked with others to convert publicly traded companies' debt into unrestricted stock under false pretenses, and then sold the stock, despite being banned since 1994 by federal securities regulators from taking part in the securities industry, according to federal prosecutors.Prosecutors say Nava, 62, directed others to write fraudulent attorney opinion letters that facilitated removing restrictions on stocks so they could be sold, in circumvention of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's regulations on the offer and sale of securities.The Department of Justice said brokerage firms cleared the sale of shares of the restricted stocks on the basis of those letters, allowing Nava and others to sell millions of shares, then move the proceeds into bank accounts under his control.In addition to his plea to a federal count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, Nava also pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, which he used to move millions of dollars in financial proceeds, and a tax fraud count for falsifying federal tax returns from 2014 to 2016, in which he underreported Surf Financial's profits in order to conceal his true income and tax liability, according to the Department of Justice.Sentencing is slated for Jan. 8 in San Diego federal court. 1556

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested two people and seized various merchandise from an illegal marijuana dispensary, an officer said today.Narcotics investigators served a search warrant at the dispensary, called Miramar Private Club, around 10 a.m. Thursday, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Novak said in a statement. The dispensary was operating in a building near the intersection of Spectrum Lane and Camino Santa Fe.Police arrested and issued citations to two employees for possession of marijuana for sale and operating a business without a permit.Officers seized six pounds of "high-grade" marijuana, more than 800 pounds of marijuana concentrates and edibles and ,300 in cash, Novak said.They also found information that led to the search of an apartment in Mission Valley, off Reflection Drive north of Friars Road, believed to be associated with the dispensary.There, officers seized an additional three pounds of marijuana, more concentrates and edibles and ,500 in cash.Narcotics detectives will continue to investigate illegally operating dispensaries in San Diego, Novak said."All owners and employees found operating these illegal businesses will be arrested and prosecuted," Novak said in the statement. 1222

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 445 new COVID-19 infections and four deaths from the illness, raising the county's total to 42,414 cases and 734 deaths.Two women and two men died between Sept. 7 and Sept. 10 and their ages ranged from the mid-50s to late 80s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes in San Diego County dropped 10.5 percent in July compared to June, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Month-over-month single-family home sales fell from 2,221 in June to 1,989 in July. Condominium and townhome sales fell from 1,162 to 994, a 14.5 percent drop, according to the association.Single-family home sales and sales of condominiums and townhomes saw smaller decreases when compared to July 2017.
