SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the San Diego Padres lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday night in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, fans were thankful to be able to participate in the action alongside other San Diegans.While much of the Friar Faithful couldn’t make it to Texas to cheer on the Padres, the playoff excitement was still felt downtown, and for some, that was enough.“Unfortunately, you can’t watch it live, but to be surrounded with a group of people that are all watching it and all really excited, it’s pretty magical,” said Andrea Durkee, a resident of downtown and Padres fan. “I think we all needed something just happy and exciting and to look forward to, and this is absolutely the best thing we could have downtown.”Some fans watched the first game in the best-of-five series from Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot, which was transformed into a drive-in style viewing party.“I have season tickets actually, and we weren’t able to go this year, which is a huge bummer, but we’ve made the best out of it,” said Catie Vance. “We’re excited that we got to do this, at least.”Spectators on the other side were just as excited.“Grew up in LA, my grandfather had season tickets, I’ve probably seen 100 Dodger games at Dodger stadium I haven’t seen them win the world series yet, I’d love to see that, but I guess if someone has to go and the Padres do go, there’s worse things that can happen in life,” said Michael Martin, a Dodger’s fan.Facial coverings were required for all fans outside of their vehicles, and vehicles were spaced 20 feet apart to encourage social distancing. 1606
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While San Diego County remains in the red tier of California’s tiered reopening plan, many local gyms and fitness centers continue to struggle to operate at 10 percent capacity.For some, it’s just not enough to survive, and business owners have to make difficult decisions.“Our rent doesn’t change whether we have one person in class versus 25,” said Taylor Hollenkamp, owner of BarreBody Studios in Pacific Beach and Tierrasanta.Days ago, Hollenkamp sent a notice out to members of BarreBody Studios, announcing the fitness studio would be closing after nearly a decade in business.“With no end in sight of things going back to normal, I had to make the decision to close permanently because the business is just hemorrhaging money,” she said.Others in the San Diego fitness industry can relate to the pain Hollenkamp is experiencing.“You can’t run a business, you can’t advertise, you can’t bring in new clients,” said Matt Ceglie, a personal trainer, and co-creator of the Strongist app, which allows users to track and log workouts.He said he has not been able to train any of his clients in a private Carmel Valley gym since March.“I had about 25 clients that I worked with on a weekly basis, now I train about nine of those clients in their homes or remotely,” said Ceglie. “It’s almost impossible right now in the tier we’re in to run your gym at 10 percent capacity.”When it comes to California’s reopening tiers, San Diego is currently in the red tier, allowing gyms and fitness centers to operate at 10 percent capacity.If San Diego County’s COVID-19 numbers improve and we move to the orange tier, they could open inside at 25 percent capacity. In the yellow tier, which is considered the best, it’s 50 percent capacity.With no exact solutions to the loss of income or path to a full reopening, more small business owners have to say goodbye to the dreams they worked hard to make a reality.“I’ve been building this business for 25 years, and it goes away just like that,” said Ceglie.“I was so passionate about the fitness industry, and this has just caused such a heartache for me and so much stress that it’s not fun for me anymore,” said Hollenkamp. “This has been my career, and I don’t know what I’m going to do after this.” 2269
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to wrong-way crashes in San Diego County, 2018 is off to an unfortunate start.There have been numerous wrong-way vehicle crashes around the county nearly eight weeks into the new year, and authorities have not been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing an uptick in these types of crashes.According to Caltrans data, from 1995-2012, an average of 23 people died each year in wrong-way crashes on California roadways.San Diego had 13 wrong-way fatalities recorded in 2015 -- the last year Caltrans data was compiled for wrong-way crashes.In 2017, Caltrans launched a two-year pilot program in San Diego and Sacramento that focuses on ways to not only prevent wrong-way crashes but to also alert authorities in the event a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.As part of the test program, Caltrans has deployed reflective pavement markings on off-ramps and signs with flashing lights that turn on if a wrong-way vehicle is detected.Caltrans has not yet provided data collected from the program to determine the protective measures' effectiveness.Here's a look at wrong-way crashes on San Diego County roadways in the past 12 months.Feb. 20, 2018: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after wrong-way crash-- A driver was hospitalized -- and also arrested -- after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on Fairmount Ave. when he hit another vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Poway family is urging people to be aware of a possible new scam that may be luring people away from their homes. One resident says she was almost tricked by a caller who claimed to be an SDG&E employee. A voicemail was left for the Chavez family, saying crews needed to do some work on equipment in the area. It stated, “It requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”Katharine Chavez says she called the company to confirm. “(They) said let me check your area and came back and said there’s no work planned in your area.”Chavez says she wants to make sure others don’t fall victim to scammers. “It's scary, and you work hard for your stuff,” said Chavez. “To have someone come in and try to take what you work for, or your neighbors, just go out and make your own money.”SDG&E says under FAA regulations they are required to notify residents and evacuate homes for special construction projects, such as transporting a new utility pole by helicopter. The company says you should always ask for SDG&E identification if you have suspicions about a worker coming to your home. 1197
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego police officers answered an unusual call to duty when an emergency struck, leaving two young children alone.SDPD officers Daniel Clark and Adrianni Vital have been a part of the department for about a year.Last Friday night, police received a call about a father in San Ysidro having a medical emergency, but he did not have any family or others to watch his two young daughters.After he was taken to the hospital, Clark and Vital stayed behind to watch the man’s 2-year-old and 4-year-old daughters.“Just to put a smile on their face, it meant a lot, it was a great interaction; it just made my day,” said Vital. “We just want to show people that we are human, too, and we do want to give back, and sometimes it comes in different shapes and sizes in how we do it."The officers did everything they could to keep the girls entertained so they would not worry about their dad.Using his own experience as a father, Clark learned more about the children’s likes and dislikes, and the officers eventually found out the girls loved the song “Baby Shark.”ABC 10News learned the girls’ father is doing OK and the family was reunited after about two hours. 1190
