Google said Monday it is shutting down the long ailing social network Google+ for consumer use amid new scrutiny of the company for reportedly failing to publicly disclose a security bug affecting users of the service. In a blog post, the company admitted Google+ had failed to achieve "broad consumer or developer adoption" since it launched as a would-be Facebook rival in 2011. However, the announcement came moments after The Wall Street Journal reported Google had opted not to disclose a bug affecting hundreds of thousands of Google+ users at least in part to avoid additional regulatory scrutiny.Google said in the blog post that it "discovered and immediately patched" a bug in March 2018. It said the bug could have affected up to 500,000 Google+ accounts, but the company found "no evidence" that any data was actually misused."Every year, we send millions of notifications to users about privacy and security bugs and issues," a spokesperson for Google said in a statement provided to CNN Business. "Whenever user data may have been affected, we go beyond our legal requirements and apply several criteria focused on our users in determining whether to provide notice. This is a developing story. GameStop announced this week that an additional 400 to 450 locations would close across the country by the end of 2020.While more video games are available for digital downloads, the next generation PS5 and Xbox will contain disc drives. The company was concerned that the next generation models would be digital only.Already in the last year, GameStop has closed 388 locations, shrinking its current retail footprint to 5,192 locations.“This will allow us to more efficiently and profitably service our customers,” company CEO George Sherman said about the closures. While many retailers have been shrinking their footprints as customers change their buying habits, GameStop is also encountering a change in technology in recent years, which has allowed customers to purchase games online. But GameStop says that there are some customers who prefer a physical disc, and that large video game downloads can use up internet data.“We believe the actions we are taking to optimize the core operations of our business by increasing efficiencies and creating a frictionless digital ecosystem to serve our customers, wherever and whenever they choose to shop, are enabling us to navigate the COVID-19 environment while positioning us well for the launch of the next generation of consoles,” Sherman said.GameStop saw a 26.7% drop in Quarter 2 sales in 2020 compared to 2019. 1374

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Joe Biden said he would be open to breaking up Facebook, a sign of the deep skepticism among many Democratic presidential contenders about the power of massive technology firms. In an interview on Monday with The Associated Press, the former vice president said that dismantling large technology companies is "something we should take a really hard look at."Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has been the most outspoken Democratic presidential candidate to press for greater regulation of Silicon Valley's most prominent companies. While Biden didn't fully embrace her proposal — saying it's "premature" to make a final judgment — he praised Warren and said she "has a very strong case to be made" for cracking down on tech giants. The comments demonstrate how Facebook is increasingly a flashpoint in the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, with some candidates arguing the influence of such companies is unchecked, allowing misinformation to poison the public debate. Sen. Kamala Harris of California said this weekend that she was open to revamping Facebook, telling CNN the company is essentially a public utility. But Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey told ABC that such calls aren't very different from the tough tactics President Donald Trump takes against his enemies.Regardless of whether Facebook is ultimately broken up, Biden told the AP that the Trump administration hasn't done enough to enforce antitrust laws in a variety of industries. 1498

I can understand that some of them may be in jeopardy, and you may want to retool an antiquated immigration system. It looks weird to have a lottery system. But chain migration? No. Family reunification."Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were granted US citizenship Thursday.Read more. 2440
