LONDON — Trucks waiting to get out of Britain are backing up for miles and people are stranded at airports as many countries impose stringent travel restrictions over concerns about a new strain of the coronavirus that authorities say may spread more easily. He said the new strain appears to be 70% more transmissible than existing strains, and British experts believe this strain is causing the explosive surge in cases in the UK. However, he added "there's no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness," or that vaccines will be less effective.The World Health Organization and health experts from around the world are researching the new strain, and working to identify what makes it different. On Sunday, COVID-19 testing czar Admiral Brett Giroir told ABC's "This Week" that he doesn't believe a travel ban is necessary at this time. He said health officials around the world have seen almost 4,000 mutations of the coronavirus and there is "no indication" the UK's variant is "overcoming England.""I don't think there should be any reason for alarm right now," Giroir said. Areas that are in the country's top tier, tier 4, which include London and parts of the southeast section of the country, can only get together with their own household and only essential travel is permitted. Johnson also cut back a proposed "Christmas bubble" plan which would have allowed people in the UK to spend up to five days with another household. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The touching black-and-white drama "Roma" that follows a domestic worker for a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City won the Oscar for best foreign language film Sunday.Director Alfonso Cuaron's deeply personal film with dialogue in Spanish and Mixtec gave Mexico its long-sought statuette in the foreign film category.The Netflix-produced film was inspired by Cuaron's own youth. "Roma" won him the best director award and one for best cinematography.The story develops in the midst of the turmoil that rocked Mexico in the early 70s, including the student demonstrations that in 1971 led to a massacre by a group backed by authorities. LOS ANGELES (AP) — All six crewmembers were asleep aboard a scuba diving boat off the Southern California coast when a fire broke out in the middle of the night, killing 34 people who were trapped in a bunkroom below the main deck, federal investigators announced Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report that said five crew members were sleeping in their quarters behind the wheelhouse on the second deck and another below deck when the fire broke out. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California is sending every registered voter a mail-in ballot for the November election, but the state will also establish hundreds of locations for people who want — or need — to vote in-person. The decision to send every voter a mail-in ballot was prompted last month by health concerns tied to the coronavirus. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state will also have a range of options for in-person voting. Counties must open a minimum of one in-person voting location for every 10,000 voters beginning the Saturday before Election Day. LONDON — The British government says it won’t be using 50 million face masks it bought during a scramble to secure protective equipment for medics at the height of the coronavirus outbreak because of safety concerns.The masks were part of a 252 million pound (2 million) contract the government signed with investment firm Ayanda Capital in April. Papers filed in a court case reveal that the masks will not be distributed because they have ear loops rather than head loops and may not fit tightly enough.The government says another 150 million masks supplied by Ayanda are unaffected but are still being tested.The papers are part of a lawsuit against the Conservative government by campaigning groups the Good Law Project and EveryDoctor.As the coronavirus outbreak accelerated across the U.K. in March, it became clear that the country lacked sufficient stockpiles of masks, gloves, gowns and other protective gear for health care workers and nursing home staff.
