CINCINNATI — When Irina Chamberlain went online to pay her student loans, she was surprised to learn that she's dead.Chamberlain — who moves, talks and isn't decomposing — said she was declared dead by the Social Security Administration in early December. Since then, she's had trouble accessing her bank accounts and making payments. "With my busy life, I'm always running, doing something," she said. "I actually thought, 'Maybe I actually died and did not realize that.' I reached for my dog and I was like, 'Can I touch them? Am I still alive, or what's going on?'"The mistake led Chamberlain to call the Social Security office, which she said had her on hold for an hour. "She said, 'Well, what's more important — to lose money or prove that you're alive?' I said both are important, but who pays me for losing a day of work," Chamberlain said.Since Chamberlain was declared dead, she hasn't been able to make deposits or withdrawls, or pay any bills. The process of being declared alive is also taking a lot of her time."I don't have time to prove that I'm alive," she said. "Somebody's mistake should exist like that, you can't [make a] mistake like that, claim somebody dead and don't even check maybe this person is alive."It could take months to get sorted out, according to Deborah Wagner, a senior attorney with Legal Aid."A lot of times it happens if your spouse dies and you have a joint bank account," Wagner said. "They report it, and for some reason the names get confused and it gets reported on both Social Security numbers."Chamberlain said the only death in her family was her father-in-law back in October."He's a male, completely different life and Social Security number, but same last name," Chamberlain said. "But everybody else in my family is alive, except me."Chamberlain is one of thousands of people this happens to each year. About 2.8 million deaths are reported to the Social Security Administration each year. A spokesperson said less than a third of a percent are corrected.In a statement, the Social Security Administration said it "recognizes erroneous death cases are very sensitive because of financial hardship and distress," and that it works to correct cases like this immediately.Wagner said Legal Aid gets about two of these cases a year."You have nothing," she said. "They've frozen your bank accounts, you can't use credit cards."It used to happen even more often, according to Mike Walters. He used to work as a claims representative with Social Security, and is now Pro Seniors."It used to be that Social Security would take phone calls and take somebody's benefits based on a phone call from a family member who said, 'My mother passed away,'" Walters said.Now, there are more checks and balances in place to avoid something like Chamberlain's situation."There were serious problems with resurrecting somebody on the computer system if they got terminated," Walters said.But why does something like this happen in the first place? Walters said the error could have had to do with the fact that Medicare used to have Social Security numbers on Medicare cards. "The Medicare number would be that spouse's Social Security number followed by a letter," he said. "Hospitals would report death in a patient, and maybe left off that letter at the end of the claim number."There are a lot of reasons why it could've happened. DENVER, Colo. – As the COVID-19 pandemic shuts down several businesses, others are cashing in. The coronavirus crisis is causing pot sales to surge. “It’s never a dull moment around here now; it’s been crazy,” said a budtender at Euflora Recreational Marijuana Dispensary in metro Denver.Euflora has seen an 85% increase in sales since a stay-at-home order went into effect. “We have never seen anything like this,” said Ashley Chubin, Euflora national brand director.Chubin says her company’s dispensaries in California and Colorado are now only offering curbside pot pick-up.It’s an adjustment of day-to-day operations to make sure both workers and customers stay safe during this worldwide crisis.“We are trying to do our very, very best as far as what the state and government is saying,” she said. “Everybody has gloves. We’re standing six feet away.”As more people practice social distancing, Euflora leaders say they now have more of a social responsibility.“We need to stay healthy and safe and happy,” said store manager Pam Pacheco. “So, if we can continue to purchase safely, let’s do it.”Pacheco says customers are stocking up on everything from edibles to flower and that the curbside pickup is helping people get their pot – and peace of mind. “I think the nerves have calmed down,” she said. “I think this is catering to them. Everybody feels good and we’re still able to give them product.”To get pot products, customers order online, drive to a dispensary where they’re greeted by a budtender who checks their identifications, takes their cash and brings back a bag filled with items containing THC or CBD.They’re products that some say help improve their quality of life.“I have Parkinson syndrome and I tremble a lot,” said one customer. “It helps to calm me down.” One couple was visiting Colorado from Illinois where weed was recently legalized. “The lines back at home are basically around the block and they don’t ever have what you want,” they said.Right now, recreational marijuana is legal in 11 states and legal for medical use in 33 states.Some states have deemed marijuana dispensaries essential businesses, which allows them to stay open and offer customers cannabis. However, there are some worries about people stocking up on weed and isolating themselves from society.“I would say it’s a huge concern by the states making it one of the essential needs,” said Tricia Hudson-Matthew, Ph.D., an addiction specialist at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She believes panic buying pot can lead to all kinds of emotional issues.“People are scared they don’t know what to do and they’re self-medicating and when that doesn’t work or we need a stronger dosage then we start to panic,” Hudson-Matthew said. She says those using pot recreationally should strongly consider facing their fears of this pandemic sober. “Our body would naturally release some of the endorphins that we need as we sit in that place and start to process,” she said. “So, we don’t need to self-medicate.”Dispensaries like Euflora say they’ll continue cannabis curbside pickup as long as the law allows. Hundreds of people protesting police brutality laid face down at the Colorado state capitol to honor George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died in police custody last Monday. The unique demonstration mirrored the position Floyd was in during his final moments, face down against pavement.A viral video of the 46-year-old’s arrest shows a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he gasped for air and said “I can’t breathe” before he lost consciousness. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital shortly after. The officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested and charged with the man’s murder on Friday. Chauvin and three other officers have also been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department for their role in Floyd’s death, but many say it’s not enough and they want to see the other officers face charges as well.Saturday's protest in Denver was one of many across the country demanding justice for Floyd. It began peacefully but turned tense during the evening hours. There were several small fires and instances of fireworks. DENVER — Being a school nurse is a lot more than bumps, bruises, bloody noses and band-aids. And now, with a shortage of nurses, school nurses are getting even more added to their workload.“I travel around from school to school,” said Brooke Goudy, a school nurse at Bromwell Elementary School in Denver. “I work one school, two days out of the week; another one, one day out of the week; and two days a week, I’m going around and evaluating school nurses. So I’m visiting maybe up to 10 schools a month.”For most of Goudy’s career, this has been her schedule. She’s not an outlier. A lot of school nurses have a hectic schedule. It’s a growing problem for them and the schools they serve.In 2018, more than 60 percent of schools across the country didn’t have a nurse on campus full time, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Every day is extremely busy,” Goudy said.School nursing shortages have been a key point at teacher strikes in Chicago and Los Angeles this year. The Chicago walkout was settled when the district agreed to put a nurse on campus at all of the city’s schools, five days a week. That’s become rare in most states.“In the past I’ve been traveling to a different school nearly every day of the week,” Goudy said.The lack of nurses puts a strain on the students who need them.“There was times when my seizures were out of hand,” said Delvechio Jones, a recent high school graduate. “I had Nurse Lucy and the rest of the faculty and staff here to help me with them.”Jones said having a nurse helped him be in class, even when he didn’t want to be.“She was there for me when I needed her the most, and she helped me get through a lot of tough things,” he said.Lucy Roberts is a school nurse at the high school Jones graduated from. However, she’s not a full-time staff member there. “I work in this school three days a week,” she said. The rest of the time she’s at other schools in the district. The other two days, Manual High School goes without a nurse.When a nurse isn’t around, schools have turned to other solutions.Kelly Grenham has been with Children’s Hospital Colorado for decades. For almost two decades, she has been a school nurse consultant.While she trains school nurses, she also trains everyone else. “They’re the secretaries, the office clerks, the people that are in the office, the bus drivers,” Grenham said. “I’m training the people there to make sure every other day of the week that they are safe.”Full-time employees at schools have taken on some nurse responsibilities. Goudy has monthly meetings with full-time school staff members to go over plans to keep kids healthy.“Schools as a whole are trying to figure out how to get more school nurses,” Grenham said.“They need the money to be able to do that, and sometimes with their budget, they can’t,” Goudy said.About 76.7% of school nurses are funded by local education dollars, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Community members understand the kind of impact that can be had with a school nurse in the building,” Roberts said. “Parents and community members can take action by telling principals, ‘Why don’t you have a nurse here?’ ”“The research does show if you have management of chronic health conditions, the visits to the emergency room go way down,” Grenham said.“Health comes first.
