Two studies released this week are offering some hope for parents and school districts looking to reopen this month across the country.The studies, one from the United Kingdom and the other from Australia, were published in the journal The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health this week and try to help inform ongoing discussions around reopening schools.A team in Australia was able to look at results from students who remained in class between January and early April.Researchers found even though schools remained open in New South Wales, children and teachers did not contribute significantly to the spread of Covid-19 -- because good contact tracing and control or quarantine strategies.Their data showed that while 27 children or staff at 25 schools and daycares had attended school while infectious with Covid-19, only 18 other people later became infected.That’s an attack rate of 1.2 percent. Overall, the attack rate of child-to-child transmission was 0.3 percent, while the attack rate of adult staff member to another adult staff member was 4.4 percent.“With effective case-contact testing and epidemic management strategies and associated small numbers of attendances while infected, children and teachers did not contribute significantly to COVID-19 transmission via attendance in educational settings,” the Australian team of researchers state in their report.In the British study, researchers looked at models on returning to school with different scenarios, including increased testing, isolation measures for positive cases, and levels of contact tracing.The models the researchers ran assumed that 75 percent of those with positive test results are contacted, provide information for contact tracing and isolate, and that 90 percent of that person’s contacts are reached by contact tracers and asked to isolate.The team assumed between 59 percent and 87percent of symptomatic people in the community would need to get tested at some point during their infection, testing results would be returned in one day, and those asked to isolate would do so for 14 days.Researchers made it clear that these levels would be needed to reopen schools.“However, without these levels of testing and contact tracing, reopening of schools together with gradual relaxing of the lockdown measures are likely to induce a second wave that would peak in December, 2020,” their report stated. “To prevent a second COVID-19 wave, relaxation of physical distancing, including reopening of schools, in the UK must be accompanied by large-scale, population-wide testing of symptomatic individuals and effective tracing of their contacts, followed by isolation of diagnosed individuals.” 2683

Two more members of President Donald Trump’s campaign working on his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma have tested positive for the coronavirus.The president’s campaign put out a statement Monday that said the two staffers, part of the advance team for Saturday’s rally, tested positive before they boarded their flight out of Oklahoma.The two were then quarantined and the campaign began contact tracing protocols. These positive tests follow the news that six other staffers, including two Secret Service agents, tested positive in the hours before Saturday’s rally.The rally was believed to be the largest indoor event in the nation since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two U.S. senators have filed an amendment to legislation that would replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday.“In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” said Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) in a press release. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.”U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced mid-June that he was introducing a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.“Juneteenth is a day in our history that redefined the meaning of freedom and equality in America,” said Senator James Lankford (R-OK). “Throughout our history, we have strived to become a more perfect union and Juneteenth was a huge step in attaining that goal. TUCSON, Ariz. — Police in Marana, Arizona are investigating after a man was reportedly holding a gun in his lap at a Starbucks near Cortaro and I-10 Saturday morning.Marana Police say around 8:45 a.m. there was a report of the man having his finger on the trigger of an un-holstered gun. The man was detained without incident when officers arrived. No one was hurt.Authorities say the man, 51-year-old James Vincent Delaney, was arrested and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Facility on felony Disorderly Conduct and Weapons Misconduct related charges.  592

UTAH COUNTY, Utah – Most days begin about the same for Jeff Smith. He makes sure to squeeze in time in the home gym and tries to eat healthy. Smith is really like most Americans, except he is completely blind.“It’s called retinitis pigmentosa,” Smith explained.It’s a hereditary disease that slowly stole his sight.“Usually, it starts out in the periphery and slowly works its way in until it’s like you’re looking through a tube,” he said.Smith has had to relearn just about everything in his life“You know, things like brushing your teeth, finding clothes to wear,” Smith said. “I probably don’t match very well here today.”Technology has become like a best friend.“I use technology from the moment I get up from probably the moment I go to sleep,” Smith said.This past election cycle, he tried something for the first time.“Anything new or different to a blind person is scary,” Smith said.He voted entirely on his mobile phone using an app called “Voatz”His country was among several in the country participating in the pilot program. The pilot program was for voters who are either disabled or overseas at the time of the election.“My county has historically been a bit of a mess when it came to elections,” said Utah County clerk Amelia Gardner Powers.Gardner Powers decided to try and clean things up.“We deliver your ballot to you on your phone, you mark your preferences on your phone and then you submit it back to us,” Gardner Powers said. “We actually print off your ballot using a ballot printer and run those through the scanner with all of our other ballots.”She says the response has been phenomenal, especially in a year like 2020“People’s access to the polls has been limited. Johnson is urging community leaders to give the tech a try so more people can vote.“Once a vote is put into blockchain technology, it doesn’t change.
