SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The migrant caravan is still over a thousand miles away but troops are getting ready to deploy to the San Diego Tijuana border. Locally, Border Patrol says they can’t answer any questions about the increased military presence, only that they are monitoring the situation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While fall-like temperatures lingered around San Diego County for a few days, a heatwave is on the way.Above-average temperatures are expected throughout the week with a heat advisory in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 5 p.m. Friday.With many people still working and learning from home, you may have noticed higher energy usage on your electricity bill.“We’re dealing with some unusual and extreme situations this year given the COVID-19 pandemic and also extreme temperatures,” said Jessica Packard, communications manager for San Diego Gas and Electric (SDGE). “Look at conserving energy when you can, I know that’s easier said than done.”She said the key to bringing down that SDG&E bill is to avoid energy usage between 4 and 9 p.m.This time spent working from home can also come in handy.“If you are home working, try to maybe run the dishwasher during your lunch hour when you normally wouldn’t because you’d be in the office,” she said.To help during this pandemic, SDG&E has suspended service disconnections for those who can’t afford to pay their utility bill. SDG&E is also offering flexible payment plans.Based on annual household income, people who qualify can also sign up for state and federal programs to get discounts on monthly energy bills.“Look at some of our customer programs and assistance options if you’re really struggling and want us to cater maybe something to help you get through this difficult time,” said Packard.The hot and dry conditions across the county also cause fire concerns to grow. Firefighting agencies are asking everyone to remain cautious and avoid doing anything that can spark a fire.Right now, Packard said there is no need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs, but SDG&E meteorologists track and monitor the weather conditions daily in case there is a change.“At SDG&E, we really don’t want to turn off your power,” she said. “We try to give at least 48 hours’ notice in advance. It has nothing to do with high usage, but more on the high fire threat districts that say Santa Ana winds are coming through, we need to protect your house and the powerlines, should Santa Ana winds impact powerlines.” 2195

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two families will forever be connected after an organ donation saves the life of a woman struggling with heart disease for nearly a decade. Susan Amador's son, David Rivera died, at the age of 30, in 2017 of a brain bleed, caused by a rare clotting disorder. The 30-year-old left behind a 4-year-old and his fiancee. Rivera was a registered organ donor and his organs helped save the lives of five people. His heart was donated to a woman named Sandra, of Chula Vista. On Monday, Rivera's family met the woman who now carries their loved ones' heart. The meeting was made possible through Lifesharing Donate Life, an organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Rivera's mom hopes her story will encourage more people to sign up to be organ donors. 824

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two greater one-horned rhino calves took their first steps into their habitat for the first time this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Next to their mothers Asha and Tanaya, the calves — born on March 25 and April 11, respectively — were finally able to explore their Asian Savanna habitat. Both pairs bonded while traversing the area, before intereacting with some of the other wildlife in the habitat.Tanaya and her female calf, which has not yet been named, enjoyed some wallowing in the mud, taking a cool dip, and meeting some of the blackbuck antelope and other animals in the 40-acre habitat.Asha and her male calf, named Arjun, explored hills and grassy areas. Arjun also met one of the habitat's Javan bantang (before quickly running back to mom's side."It’s great to see Asha and Tanaya introducing their calves to other wildlife for the first time," said Jillian King, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. "Everything is new to the calves right now, so it will be interesting to watch them explore. We will keep a watchful eye on them, and look forward to them meeting more of the wildlife on the savanna soon."The greater one-horned rhino is listed as "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. This is primarily because of habitat loss, poaching, and illegal rhino horn trafficking.The species, once widespread in Southeast Asia, is now only found in India and Nepal. There are an estimate 3,500 greater one-horned rhino left in the world. 1563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Video posted on social media shows a vehicle narrowly missing a pedestrian and slamming into a car in Pacific Beach. Dennys Morales says the incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Riviera Drive and Graham Street. Video shows the car making a turn before nearly hitting a woman walking in the street. The footage then shows the driver slamming into Morales' parked car. RELATED: Driver hits pedestrian, flips car in Pacific BeachThe good news is, Morales says the suspect came forward Tuesday morning, sending him a message on Facebook to confess. Morales tells 10News the man said his back tire was low, claiming he swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrian, instead hitting the parked car. A police report has also been made. “This person needs to be held accountable,” Morales said.
