The hit & miss nature of #thunderstorms means it's difficult to forecast exactly where the heaviest rain will be—some parts of #bushfire & #drought affected eastern Australia could see 50–100 mm over the next few days; while others may see very little https://t.co/T7MYuIdxkO pic.twitter.com/zgmiBmqcIG— Bureau of Meteorology, Australia (@BOM_au) January 15, 2020 383

The most distant world ever explored 4 billion miles away finally has an official name: Arrokoth. That means “sky” in the language of the Native American Powhatan people, NASA said Tuesday.NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flew past the snowman-shaped Arrokoth on New Year’s Day, 3 ? years after exploring Pluto. At the time, this small icy world 1 billion miles (1.6 billion kilometers) beyond Pluto was nicknamed Ultima Thule given its vast distance from us.“The name ‘Arrokoth’ reflects the inspiration of looking to the skies,” lead scientist Alan Stern of Southwest Research Institute said in a statement, “and wondering about the stars and worlds beyond our own.”The name was picked because of the Powhatan’s ties to the Chesapeake Bay region.New Horizons is operated from Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland. The Hubble Space Telescope — which discovered Arrokoth in 2014 — has its science operations in Baltimore. The New Horizons team got consent for the name from Powhatan Tribal elders and representatives, according to NASA. The International Astronomical Union and its Minor Planet Center approved the choice.Arrokoth is among countless objects in the so-called Kuiper Belt, or vast Twilight Zone beyond the orbit of Neptune. New Horizons will observe some of these objects from afar as it makes its way deeper into space.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives 1436

The Environmental Protection Agency is set Thursday to announce the repeal of the Obama-era Waters of the United States rule that extended federal authority and protections to streams and wetlands, according to a source familiar with the details of the announcement. The announcement is scheduled to take place at the National Association of Manufacturers, a trade group in Washington, DC.The 2015 regulation, commonly known as WOTUS, defined what bodies of water are protected under the federal Clean Water Act but was a favorite punching bag of Republicans, who ridicule it as government overreach. Democrats defended it as necessary to ensure waterways remained pollution-free.Thursday's repeal of the regulation is likely to draw intense litigation from the environmental community. Those groups have argued the Trump EPA's changes to the rule protects fewer small waterways and that could result in more pollution and put people at risk.A source who's been invited to the announcement tells CNN that EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler is expected to sign the finalized rule repealing the regulation."It's the first of two steps. First the regulation has to be repealed then the EPA will move to replace it with a new regulation," the source said. Wheeler unveiled a proposed replacement regulation last December. The EPA announced Wednesday that Wheeler will "make a major water policy announcement" but did not specify what the announcement would be. EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.President Donald Trump has repeatedly called clean water a priority for his administration. "We want crystal clean water and that's what we're doing and that's what we're working on so hard," he said in an environmental speech earlier this summer. But the Obama-era rule has been under attack from Trump and conservatives for years.Several states challenged the Obama-era rule, and a federal judge in Georgia 1966

The major television networks will provide wall-to-wall coverage of President Donald Trump's prime time address on border security on Tuesday.NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox broadcast network all said on Monday that they had agreed to the White House's request for air time.CNN, Fox News and MSNBC will all carry the address live, as well.Presidents have been using Oval Office addresses to make big announcements for decades. But this is Trump's first time using the setting for an address to the nation. On Monday the White House requested air time for the speech, as is customary in the relationship between a president and the press. But for a few hours, it was unclear what the networks would do.Trump announced his plan for the 9 p.m. ET Tuesday address via Twitter. In his tweet, he characterized the situation on the border as a "national security crisis," a description that even some people in his own party reject. In response, a broadcast network executive said "time has been requested for 9 p.m. Networks are deliberating."The broadcasters have been known to resist presidential requests for air time for a variety of reasons, including the perceived urgency of the subject and the popularity of the shows that would be interrupted. With Trump, there were other factors to consider, including his record of deception and his tendency to ramble off script in long speeches. Many Trump critics posted messages on social media urging the networks not to air an address that could be filled with falsehoods. Some said that a prominent Democrat should be given equal time. It is unclear if any sort of Democratic rebuttal is in the works. With all that in mind, network newsrooms were abuzz with speculation about what the broadcasters would decide, since it was sure to be controversial either way.CBS was the first of the broadcasters to say it would go ahead and carry the address. Then NBC, ABC and Fox broadcast network said the same. There's no word on a decision from PBS yet. There is precedent for broadcast networks declining to air a presidential speech. In 2014, ABC, NBC, and CBS declined to carry an 2119
