PARKLAND, Florida — As students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School return from spring break, they will face several new security changes at the school.On Monday, students will receive clear backpacks for free, and the superintendent says those will be the only backpacks allowed on campus.The thousands of students at the school will also now wear a school identification badge everywhere on campus.This comes after the deadly school shooting in February that killed 17 people, but also after a series of incidents the week leading up to spring break.Two students were charged with bringing weapons on campus, and a third made a threat on social media.Deputies also arrested the confessed shooter’s brother for trespassing on the school property. Zachary Cruz pleaded no contest Thursday and sentenced to time served and six months of probation.A Broward County sheriff’s deputy was also suspended for allegedly sleeping in his patrol car while on duty at the school.Florida Highway Patrol will also have eight troopers stationed at the school entrances. The Broward County School district is providing additional security as well.This district will also consider metal detectors, metal detector wands, and trying to consolidate the point of entry for students and staff.The memorial that honored their classmates for the past six weeks is no longer there. PACIFIC BEACH (KGTV)-- Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and police are bracing for partiers with maximum enforcement throughout the holiday.At Pacific Beach dozens of motorized scooters pooled around two San Diego Police Officers. They educated dozens of riders on the rules, saying riders need to wear a helmet. They've given out dozens of tickets as well, since Friday.Skateboards and roller skates are also not allowed on the boardwalk. Jake Kostreba said he rides on the boardwalk all the time and was frustrated at why he received a ticket, "I mean I guess someone needs to clean up the beach so, I'll be that guy, so whatever, it's pretty dirty."Police say he lost control of his board and it hit a woman's shin.Visitors told 10News they don't mind the extra police presence.Ruqayyah Abdulrahoof drove down from Los Angeles, "I think it's really important to see the police over here especially with the kids and the beach I think it's really important to make sure the people have a good safe memorial day weekend and nobody's drinking I think it's a great place, and good to see officers are making an effort."Scot Brantley came down with his wife and baby from Washington for a friend's crossfit tournament and echoed the sentiment, "I think we feel safe you know people are out here enjoying having a good time so nothing too crazy so far but it's early it's early though."On the beach, lifeguards have been busy as well, rescuing 20 people and rendering medical aid to 47 Saturday. They also had more than 1,000 preventative interactions.Lifeguards want you to know smoking and alcohol is never permitted at the beach.Police geared up for a weekend of DUI checkpoints and extra patrols. Chula Vista, San Diego City and County will all have checkpoints set up, looking for impaired drivers. That includes medication as well as alcohol.DUI arrests are up this year compared to 2017 on the same day. PHOENIX, Arizona — Cell phone video of a boy repeatedly punching a girl in a sixth-grade class at Alfred F. Garcia Elementary School in Phoenix has gone viral, and the mother of the victim is upset with the school for not contacting her after the beating. The 12-year-old girl who was punched did not want to show her face or give her name, but says a lot of kids in school have seen the video. "It's gotten to the point where it's so viral, that they've made memes about it," said the victim.The girl used to be friends with the boy who is seen punching her, but she claims she made a joke months ago about his sister. She says she feels the attack was planned and some kids pulled out their phones to record it.  "I looked at the phone, and I knew it was coming," said the victim. "That's why I didn't do anything about it."The victim says she didn't tell her mom because she didn't want her to worry. "It was hard telling her because I don't like seeing my mom cry," said the victim. "It hurts."But her mom, Antoinette Contreras saw it days later.  "It just feels like all my fears and worst thoughts happened," said Contreras. "They came true."Contreras says she is shocked the school never contacted her. She finally got through to the principal on Thursday. "My question to her was, 'Why did you not contact me?'" said Contreras. "This happened on Monday. It is now Thursday."And while she wants the boy to face consequences, more importantly, Contreras wants him to get help. "I come from, what we call the ghetto, south Phoenix," said Contreras. "A lot of times these kids are rejected. They're the rejects of the world. The outcasts. The misfits. They're the ones that no one cares about. Because the parents don't care about them at home. And the staff doesn't care about them at school. And no one on the streets cares about these kids."Contreras says she plans to pull all of her children out of the Murphy Elementary School District. She will also bring the issue to district officials and police. There is a new law that goes into effect next school year that requires school officials to notify parents after violent incidents.  2211

PHOENIX — Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego says one area hospital is nearing capacity in its morgue and may be requesting refrigerated trucks. The morgue at the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office is also reportedly near capacity.Gallego said Friday morning that officials are looking at an option to prevent problems at the Phoenix-area Abrazo Health Hospital."It's specific just to one area…this is not a statewide problem," Gallego said. "Maricopa County... is looking at everything they can do."Abrazo Health later issued a statement saying that they have "adequate" morgue space, but are taking "proactive" steps to ensure they have overflow morgue space if needed.Gallego added that "we are losing too many Arizonans." She also urged Arizona Gov. Police say a Texas woman was not happy when she caught her husband of 11 years looking at another woman, so she allegedly stabbed him after attending a festival in San Antonio, the Express News reports. Star Perez, 27, was arrested on charges of suspicion of aggravated assault following the incident Saturday night. Police claim that after the couple returned home from the festival, Perez confronted her husband about looking at the woman. That is when she allegedly stabbed the man in the right arm. Perez then fled after allegedly threatening to kill her husband. Her bond was set at ,000 on Monday.  645
