LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new report from La Mesa Police show that crime in the city has decreased dramatically over the last year.According to East County Magazine, most individual crime categories are at a minimum of five-year lows with overall trends around the levels seen by the city in the 1960’s, marking 50-year lows.Crime from the fourth quarter of 2016 to the fourth quarter of 2017 decreased by more than 27 percent.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhoodViolent crimes have also seen a significant decrease since 2016. According to a report, La Mesa saw a more than 18 percent decrease in 2017 compared to the same time in 2016.Other crimes that dropped off were robberies, with a decrease of more than 10 percent, and property crimes, with a decrease of more than 28 percent.La Mesa Police Captain Matt Nichols said having the budget to be fully staffed has enabled more officers to be in the field.More outreach within the community has also led to more tips and an emphasis on attacking issues before they grow are also helping keep crime low.Another factor in the city’s success is a focus on the 911 dispatch which is run by the department. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A driver was taken to the hospital after crashing into a palm tree and a light pole in Lakeside Monday morning. According to authorities, the crash happened along Winter Gardens Boulevard at Winter Gardens Drive around 7 a.m. Police say the driver was heading down Winter Gardens Boulevard when, for an unknown reason, he crashed into a rock and mailbox before slamming into a palm tree and a light pole. Nearby witnesses, one of whom is a nurse, rushed to help the man. He was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. Authorities say speed appears to be a factor in the crash. 616

(KGTV) -- La Mesa residents will finally get the chance to talk about the protests that were followed by violence and looting in May.The La Mesa City Council is hosting a town hall for the community Thursday at 6 p.m.The town hall comes after the city picked a firm to look into how different local agencies handled the incident. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists are using an autonomous underwater vehicle to help get purified wastewater to your faucets. The remote-controlled sub operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helps measure how the purified water mixes with the Lake Jennings reservoir water.It’s one of the state-required steps water officials need to take before purified wastewater from the Padre Dam Water District’s Advanced Water Purification System is introduced to homes through Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings and water treatment facility.“There’s that factor that it’s coming from a waste facility originally. So, what happens if there’s some sort of failure that didn’t get caught? Well, now there’s a buffer. There’s a buffer. It will sit in the reservoir,” said Helix’s Director of Water Quality Brian Olney.If all goes as planned, Padre Dam will need to expand its Advanced Water Purification System and build a pipeline to deliver that water to Lake Jennings. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa's police chief will retire after more than five years in the role and following unrest over the police department's policing tactics.Chief Walt Vasquez announced Thursday that he will retire effective Aug. 27. LMPD says Vasquez delayed his retirement when the coronavirus hit in mid-March in order to continue serving through the pandemic."Over the past five years, our team has worked very hard to keep the citizens of La Mesa safe. The decrease in property and violent crimes in the City from 2015 to 2019 has been the largest decrease of all incorporated cities in San Diego County," Vasquez said in a statement. "This is extraordinary, especially when you take into consideration that the La Mesa Police Department is one of the lower staffed departments in the County. Crime decreases of this nature are only achieved through hard work and collaboration with the citizens we serve."Vasquez most recently was top cop after a controversial arrest video surfaced, showing a Black man, Amaurie Johnson, being shoved into a sitting position and arrested by a white cop. The cop that was at the center of that video is no longer employed by the city. Johnson has since filed a lawsuit against the city and the officers involved.Following the arrest, and on the heels of nationwide calls for police reform, a protest outside of La Mesa Police Department on May 30 saw a 59-year-old woman shot in the face by a bean bag round during the demonstration and hospitalized, bringing the department's response tactics into question. An investigation into that incident and the officer involved is still being conducted.As calls for police reform continued locally and across the nation, the department followed other law enforcement agencies and banned the carotid restraint technique.Prior to his role in La Mesa, Vasquez started his career in the San Diego Police Department in 1986. He achieved the rank of Assistant Chief before being sworn in as La Mesa's Chief in 2015.Vasquez also served on the Board of Directors of San Diego Youth Services for more than 10 years and has served on the Board of Directors of San Diego’s Trauma Intervention Program since 2018. He was also appointed in 2016 by then-Governor Jerry Brown to serve on The POST Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. 2331
