CHICAGO, Ill. – Scientists have identified nearly 70 drugs that could be effective in treating the coronavirus. But already, some drugs are being improperly prescribed or hoarded even before they can be adequately investigated and tested. For some who rely on the life-saving drugs for other ailments, shortages are already being felt. Across the country, some people with chronic illnesses are finding their much-needed medications are on backorder. One drug in short supply is Plaquenil, generically known as hydroxychloroquine sulfate. It’s used to treat malaria and chronic rheumatic diseases. “It prevents them from having severe pain, from their symptoms getting worse, from forming modules. This is a daily medication that these people absolutely need,” said Erin Fox, who’s with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Fox, who maintains a list of nationwide drug shortages, says four of the eight producers of hydroxychloroquine are running out. “We’ve definitely seen a rapid increase in demand for this product,” she said. “I think it’s a frustrating problem and I think it’s really scary for those patients that rely on this medication day in and day out.” While hydroxychloroquine is not FDA-approved as an off-label treatment option for novel coronavirus, it has already been touted by the president as a potential game-changer. “Millions of units are ordered, and we’re going to see what happens,” said President Donald Trump. “We’re going to be talking to the governors about it, and the FDA is working on it right now.” Last week, a French study of just 20 people reported 70% of coronavirus patients treated with Plaquenil after six days tested negative for the virus, compared to 12.5% of the control group. Hospitals across the country are stockpiling it as a precaution. The state of New York has already acquired 70,000 doses as part of its own drug trials this week. But with no large-scale clinical data available, public health officials warn it’s too early to know whether the drug is effective against coronavirus. Police released new details late Tuesday afternoon about a dog owner who gunned down two people inside a Port St. Lucie home the day before.Investigators said Guy Alexander Hansman, 55, and his daughter, Harper Hansman, 11, were shot and killed by their neighbor, identified as Ronald Delserro, 82, at a home on Monday.According to police, the violence stemmed from a dispute over the gunman's dog, a bull mastiff named Roxy. Earlier on Monday, the animal had been declared dangerous in court."They all came home from court and then the suspect armed himself and went to the victim's house," St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said at a news conference.Authorities said that after police officers and deputies arrived at the scene on Monday, they entered the home and exchanged gunfire with Delserro, who was armed with two handguns.An officer was shot in the arm and was treated at the hospital and later released.A SWAT Team later discovered Delserro dead inside the house, according to police. It's unclear how he died.In a truly tragic development, police said Harper Hansman was the person who called 911 before her death.According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, the feud dated back to March 4, when Delserro's bull mastiff attacked and bit a woman who lived at the victims' home.That eventually led to a court hearing in which the animal was declared dangerous."I believe this to be an intentional act of violence against these neighbors," said Port St. Lucie Assistant Police Chief Richard DelToro on Monday. "It's tragic. You can't rationalize irrational behavior."On Tuesday, 24 hours after the violent and tragic attack, crime scene investigators continued processing the scene. Despite being the most watched sport in the country, fewer young people are playing tackle football. And while 7th grader Andrew Ek dreams of playing in the NFL, Brigid Ling worries about what the sport can do to Andrew’s and her own son’s brains. “When our oldest son was 8 he was begging us to move on from flag football to play tackle,” Ling said. “And we just weren’t ready for him to play tackle football at that age.” A new survey found participation in tackle football for kids 6 to 12 years old, dropped more than 17 percent over the past five years. A big reason for the shift: brain injuries. After more than a decade of research, there’s hard evidence of a direct link between football and CTE - a brain disease caused by repeated hits to the head. “We just felt there had to be a good interim step for kids to play,” Ling said. So rather than find a new sport for their son to play, Ling and her husband created one. “We created TackleBar as a way to allow kids to make a transition step from flag football to tackle football,” she said. In TackleBar, players hit but they don’t tackle each other to the ground. The goal is to wrap up and rip off foam bars harnessed on other player’s lower backs. Tacklebar coach Logan U’u grew up in a city that embraced hardnose football. “Playing football in Oakland, man, you got guys like Marshawn Lynch out there in your league,” U’u said. “We’re just little kids just cracking heads every single play.” Earning a football scholarship to the University of Minnesota, U’u knows about the sport’s rewards. He also knows about the risks like concussions. “You become nauseated to the point where you feel like you’re going to throw up and maybe you do throw up,” he said. “And then you feel like you want to cry but you can’t because you’re so confused. It’s a very bizarre feeling.” U’u says TackleBar teaches players proper tackling techniques and ultimately better prepares kids to transition to real take downs. Neurosurgeon and University of Minnesota researcher Uzma Samadani says TackleBar is much safer than both tackle and even flag football, and she has the research to prove it. “We published this paper in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine,” she said. “Basically, what we found was that the injury rate was seven-fold lower in the TackleBar kids versus the other kids” For two seasons, Samadani tracked 1,000 football players ages 9 to 15, and her findings showed a big spike in safety. “I think TackleBar makes athletes safer for two mechanisms,” she said. “One is reducing head-to-head contact and other is reducing head-to-ground contact.” Despite the study, Samadani says banning contact sports isn’t the ultimate answer – safer options are. “Now that we understand that the chronic effects of neurotrauma exist and they’re very serious we have to prevent it from happening in the next generation,” she said. Now entering its fifth season, TackleBar is attracting a new generation of young football players. “Last year we were over 8,000 kids in over 200 communities,” said TackleBar CEO Tim Healy. Healey says they plan on continuing to expand to teams across the country with the hope that TackleBar can reverse the trend and ultimately bring kids back to old-school football – when they’re ready. “It pains me when I see these schools where the numbers are down so much,” he said. “This is a way we can save the game.” 3447

On one of the islands of the Florida Keys, there’s a small animal that’s causing a big stir. “You know, I love the Key Deer, they’re just, they’re warm and fuzzy,” said Cathy Rhoades, who runs the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. “We do consider them a national treasure,” said Kristie Killam with US Fish and Wildlife. The Key Deer. It’s a little known species of deer that’s native to the island chain. The animal is very small compared to its cousins on the mainland. “The small ones, can get pretty – 2 to 4 pounds at birth," explained Killam. "Some of the tinier ones that look almost like a house cat. Some of the itty bitty fawns." For more than 50 years, the baby Bambi has been a member of the endangered species act. The population declined in the 40s and 50s by hunting. “To the point there was only about 25 to 50 Key Deer left in the wild were the estimates,” said Killam. But they could be removed from the endangered species list. They are recommended on the 3-year work plan for US Fish and Wildlife for de-listing due to recovery. They’re just one of 55 species included in the report. But the tiny animal is incredibly important to Vivian Beck. "They’re just so unique that they literally live among us, or I should say we live among them, and they’re adapting,” said Beck. She’s the president of the Key Deer Protection Alliance, an organization dedicated to keeping the Key Deer protected. Beck thinks removing the animal from the list is premature. US Fish and Wildlife estimates there are between 600 and 800 deer on the island. She says she’s been told as many as 1,000 deer. “Texas A&M said there were 573, so our numbers didn’t match up at all,” said Beck. While the Department of Fish and Wildlife did give us an interview to discuss the deer’s history and biology, they said they can’t comment on an ongoing species assessment. For those that live in the Florida Keys, they just want the assessment to reflect the truth. “That’s the process I would like to see happen, just get more information, more information and refine your thinking based on the information that you have,” said Rhoades.“The Key Deer are one storm and one disease away from total extinction,” said Beck.  2230
