SUNLAND (CNS) - Firefighters Friday used a helicopter to hoist a horse to safety after the animal became stranded down a hillside on private property in Sunland.Rescuers were sent to the 11300 block of North Oro Vista Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.The 30-year-old male horse, named Sunny, apparently was not injured, but was lying on the ground, and efforts to help him to his feet were unsuccessful, the LAFD reported.A helicopter was brought in, a veterinarian medicated Sunny, and the 800- to 900-pound horse was airlifted on a sling about 10 a.m. to safe ground, where he was to be examined for possible injury. 668

The “chicken wars” may be heating up again in the fast-food industry.McDonald’s announced Tuesday that it will soon be introducing spicy chicken nuggets to its menu, an item popularized by competitor Wendy’s.McDonald’s says it will start offering both Spicy Chicken McNuggets and Mighty Hot Sauce in the United States starting on September 16.“Breaded with a sizzling tempura coating made of both cayenne and chili peppers, these craveable, dippable and downright-delicious Spicy Chicken McNuggets are joining our classic McNugget line up, and pack plenty of spice and flavor into each bite,” wrote McDonald’s in a press release.The spicy nuggets and sauce will only be available for a limited time and at participating restaurants.“This is the first time we’ve introduced a new flavor of our classic Chicken McNuggets in the U.S. since they came to menus in 1983,” said Vice President of Menu Innovation, Linda VanGosen.The fast-food chain says the Mighty Hot Sauce is its first new sauce since 2017 and it will be the hottest one available at its restaurants.“For those who care to dial up the heat, we’ve crafted our new Mighty Hot Sauce, boasting a powerful blend of crushed red peppers and spicy chilis,” said McDonald’s.Additionally, McDonald’s says it will start selling a new McFlurry made with Chips Ahoy!“This delicious treat features vanilla soft-serve, caramel topping and Chips Ahoy! cookie pieces blended throughout,” said McDonalds.The Chips Ahoy! TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Much like the rest of the country, unemployment rates skyrocketed in Florida at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while the Florida unemployment rate has fallen somewhat to 7.6%, many in the state are still in need of help and may get it through a program called EB or Extended Benefits.In October alone, more than 10,000 people applied for unemployment in the Tampa Bar area — including 7,338 in Hillsborough County and 3,799 in Pinellas County."We continue to see unemployment problems within our office; it's mostly coupled with eviction notices," said State Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat whose district covers the Orlando area.Eskamani has fielded calls from Florida's unemployed since March."We need political back-and-forth to stop. The American people are in desperate need of relief," she said.The regular 12 weeks of benefits for those unemployed only lasted until about mid-June. That's when many applied for PEUC, a 13-week extension that took extended benefits to about mid-September.With the state's unemployment rate remaining above 5% for as long as it has, regular unemployment benefits were extended but haven't been made available yet."They're trying to integrate it into the connect system, which is why they're saying December it's going to be available," Eskamani said.In order for Floridians to get extended benefits — or EB — their PEUC benefits must have been used up between June 7 and Nov. 7."I actually think the gap that's being sent by the US Department of Labor catches most people," Eskamani said.It could, however, have an impact on Disney World employees, many of whom were furloughed or laid off amid an extended park closure. What happens for others seeking unemployment in 2021 is still unclear.Eskamani says that by then, the state legislature should officially be able to file a bill that she and other lawmakers drafted in October, hoping to get claimants more money for a longer period of time."(I want to) increase the benefit amount to 0 — change the sliding scale of what's available to us at the limit of 26 weeks, which is the national average," she said. "Put in place time restrictions for when the (Florida Department of Economic Opportunity) has to get back to you on your eligibility status."Eskamani also hopes to extend benefits to self-employed who are out of work and have the legislature's Oversight Committee hold the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity accountable.She says once the bill filed, she hopes to push the bill into committee hearings. Stores across the country are starting to advertise and display back-to-school sales. From electronics to clothes, the National Retail Federation is tracking buying trends as the new school year approaches."Parents may not know how their children are attending classes, whether it’s in-person or online, a mix, and that is certainly reflected in how people are shopping right now. So, when we did our study in early July most consumers did not know what they needed to buy yet," said Katherine Cullen, the Senior Director for Industry and Consumer Insights at the National Retail Federation. She says there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming school year and most consumers are hesitant to buy back to school supplies right now, but many already have plans to spend more."For grade school and high school shoppers it is over 0 on average which is about 0 more than last year. So, some of that is definitely being driven by this current environment and it's shaping how people are planning to buy right now," said Cullen. Cullen says consumers will likely spend more than last year on school supplies and just as much on new clothes. She said there are some things kids need no matter where they learn. "Kids keep growing even if they're not going to school in person, they will likely still need some new items."But the big ticket items families will be spending money on is electronics. "We are certainly seeing that many families, over half, are expecting there will be at least some online learning component and as a result they're planning to make some extra purchases around that: laptops, computers, head phones and speakers are a big component of that," said Cullen.The National Retail Federation says grade school and high school shoppers plan to spend more on average on electronics. Amy Cunningham, a parent in South Carolina, says her family decided to purchase two laptops to help their children with online remote learning this fall. This past spring, the children shared their parents' computers. "Having to juggle the kids’ distance learning with what we were doing was hard so we knew if we were going to do it this year, which was our plan, that we were going to need to get additional laptops," said Cunningham. Cunningham says she likely won't need many other school supplies and doesn't anticipate needing to buy new clothes for the school year."I’d probably get notebooks and stuff like that just because we don’t have a lot of that sitting around. Clothes, no. They live in their play clothes at home now so there’s no point really," says Cunningham.As for how parents will be back-to-school shopping this year, for many, gone are the days of traditional in-store browsing. Tens of thousands of children around the country will be getting a holiday puppy this year, but others will end up empty-handed and disappointed, ripped off by a puppy scam that has only gotten worse during the pandemic.So before you start looking for one, we have the warning signs a cute pup you find for sale is really a scam to steal your heart and your money.Penny Lloyd wanted to buy her kids a Yorkshire Terrier puppy -- a Yorkie -- for their home this Christmas."It was going to be a Christmas gift," she said.She found an ad on Facebook offering discount puppies."I saw this advertisement on Facebook, and I opened up the app and it said 'Yorkies for sale, half price, originally ,400 on sale for 0.'"It was a great price; so, she messaged the seller."I did, but I never got any response," Lloyd said.It's probably a good thing she never heard back, according to the Better Business Bureau, which says there is a good chance it was a scammer who would have asked for a deposit.That is what happened to Jo Standridge last year. She wired 0 via Western Union to a website -- now gone -- called Best Mini Shnauzers.com.That was the end of the seller, and of her puppy dreams."I tried to text him numerous times after that," she said. "Called him, couldn't get through. That was the end of the communications. Nothing."Puppy scam worsens during pandemicThe puppy scam has been around for more than five years, but the BBB says this year it's getting worse because so many people want either a "pandemic puppy" or a holiday puppy.Sara Kemerer of the Better Business Bureau said real puppy photos get reposted at counterfeit websites."It's very easy for scammers to steal a video or picture of a pet from the internet to make the pet seem real," she said.But the pups are always out of town, and the seller will ask hundreds of dollars for shipping and insurance.Once you wire them the money, they and their ad disappear.How to protect yourselfSo what can you do? Kemerer says ask for video of the seller with the pup.
