Asahi Breweries Ltd., Japan's largest beer producer, is targeting the Chinese milk products market with an all-around manner with its new milk factory being under construction in China's Shandong Province, company officials told Xinhua Saturday.     A milk company, which has been building the factory, was established in Laiyang city, Shandong Province, in April. It's the first time for a large-scale Japanese corporation to enter the Chinese integrated milk business in the fields of both production and sales.     The company is owned 90 percent by Asahi. Business of the new company will involve the entire process from raising cows to marketing, while products will be sold to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao under Asahi's proprietary label, according to Asahi Breweries officials.     Price of the Asahi milk products will be about 50 percent to 100 percent higher than average local milk, and sales in the first year will be targeted at 1 ton per day, they said. BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The Beijing municipal government said on Sunday that the city's state-owned enterprises (SOEs), institutions and social groups should adjust their working hours from July 20 to Sept. 20 to avoid traffic jams. A notice issued by the municipal government said that, except for schools and institutions that provide essential services, SOEs should operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Beijing municipal government said on Sunday that the city's state-owned enterprises (SOEs), institutions and social groups should adjust their working hours from July 20 to Sept. 20 to avoid traffic jams    Large shopping centers should open at 10 a.m. and stay open later in the evening.     Other institutions should operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.     Government departments won't alter their hours, the notice said.     The notice also encouraged institutions to handle business online if possible and arrange flex-time arrangements where feasible.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The world's widest tunnel with an inner diameter of 13.7 meters completed its excavation here under the Yangtze River on Friday.     The 8.9-km tunnel is part of a 12.6 billion yuan (1.84 billion U.S. dollars) bridge and tunnel project to link Shanghai with Chongming Island, the country's third largest after Taiwan and Hainan.     The tunnel will accommodate a six-lane expressway and a rail line. When operational in 2010, travel to Chongming from urban Shanghai will take 20 minutes, according to Yu Xuanping, vice general manager of the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd, builder of the tunnel.     The company used a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 15.43 meters, the largest of its kind, to excavate under the Yangtze.     The tunnel and bridge project would make the transport networkson the southern and northern sides of the river more closely connected, said Wu Liangyong, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician.     The tunnel connects Shanghai's vast Pudong District with Changxing Island in the Yangtze, while the bridge connects Changxing and Chongming.     Currently, Chongming is connected with Jiangsu Province to its north.     Located at the Yangtze River mouth, Chongming covers an area of1,200 sq. km, equal to about 20 percent of Shanghai's total land area.     China's central government plans to turn the island into a model of an eco-friendly town in the country. Shanghai municipal government is also paying great attention, with infrastructure projects being built within the island.     Experts said the inconvenient traffic between Shanghai and Chongming once blocked the development of the island. The construction of the bridge and tunnel would help attract overseas investment and make the suburb a major channel of the Yangtze River Delta area.

KUNMING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged that his government will extend further support to poor areas inhabited by ethnic minority people.     "All ethnic groups form one big family. We must be united and help each other, to prosper and make progress together," Wen told a group of Jingpo nationality farmers during a visit to the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visits the DehongDai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan Province from March 31 to April 1.Wen's trip to Yunnan from March 31 to April 1 took place after he attended the third Summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion held in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Yunnan has the largest number of ethnic minority groups among all Chinese regions.     Wen told farmers in Dai, Jingpo and De'ang villages that his new cabinet has decided to increase rural spending by 25 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars).     Government shall also increase subsidies for cereal growing and farming machines as well as the minimum state purchasing prices for rice and wheat, Wen said in a Dai village, greeting local farmers in Dai language. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visits the DehongDai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan Province from March 31 to April 1.At the Santaishan Jingpo village, farmer Ding Kongdao told Wen that although he no longer worries about food and basic medical care, cash income is still hard to make being in such a remote mountainous village.     The Premier said villagers should be relocated to places where life is easier and that small water conservation projects should be built to water crops.     He also suggested that farmers should also grow cash crops such as coffee and banana in addition to rice and sugar cane. Local governments should also help them find jobs in cities.     In a De'ang nationality village at the foot of a mountain, Premier Wen met Yao Lateng in his new house. When he learnt that Yao married a Han girl, Wen shook hands with the couple and said, "This is unity among ethnic groups."     The village was relocated to a flat place near national highway302 from a nearby mountain five years ago, with special government funding to help ethnic minority groups.     Wen urged local officials to make education their top priority, saying that education is the foundation for people to improve their life.     Wen also hosted a small meeting attended by a dairy farmer, a school master and a countryside doctor, among others, to solicit their opinions of government work.
