SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  As the San Diego Airport plans a Billion expansion to Terminal 1, concerns over how to get people to and from Lindbergh Field are creating problems for the project."We are the first and last impression people have of San Diego," says Dennis Probst, the Airport VP of Development. "We want to make it a good one."The airport served a record 22 million passengers in 2017. They expect that number to grow to 28 million by 2035.  Getting all of those people to and from Lindbergh is a big part of the expansion.Plans put forward by the airport call for a new three lane roadway connecting Harbor Drive to Lindbergh. It would start near Laurel Street and take people directly to the new terminal and proposed parking garage."No stop lights, no stop signs, free-flowing," says Probst. "It's gonna take about 45,000 cars a day off Harbor Drive."But other San Diego agencies say the airport needs to think bigger and focus on different modes of transportation, instead of just cars."Connecting the airport to transit is something we've been talking about for a long, long time," says Rafael Castellanos, the Chair of the Port of San Diego. "If San Diego wants to be a world class city, we need to have world-class infrastructure."The Port owns the land that the airport sits on. They've proposed a light rail-style people mover that would connect trolley stations nearby to the terminal.Meanwhile, SANDAG and the County of San Diego released a study proposing a skyway with gondola rides that could run from the Convention Center to the Airport."I think the only obstacle is getting everyone to the table quickly," says Castellanos. "That's something that can be easily overcome."The airport says they're willing to look at all options, but they can't take a stand or incorporate any into their current plans because they can only control what happens on airport property."The view from the airport's side is that we're not the region's transit planning agency," says Probst.Funding is also an issue. The expansion project will only use FAA and airport-generated money. Because of that, FAA rules say they can only spend money to improve things at the airport or directly related to the airport. A tram or skyway that spans all of Harbor Drive would require an exception to that rule and would need money from other agencies as well.Probst says the airport has already started talking to the FAA about that option. They got a similar exception to help with infrastructure improvements when the airport built the rental car center a few years back.Right now, the airport is reviewing comments from their Environmental Impact Report. The next step is to put together environmental quality reports for the state and the federal government. Probst says the debate over transit is slowing down the process, to the point where he doesn't think they'll be able to start construction until after 2020. 2932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As Governor Jerry Brown visited Ground Zero for the Camp Fire in Paradise, a San Diego woman is doing the same. Corine Finnigan has more than 100 family members who lived in Paradise, and is now driving a truckload of supplies and cash to help them. Her adult niece, Christine Blackburn told 10news about her harrowing escape through the flames. While the fire was inching closer to her car, she shot video. In it, you can hear her trying to comfort her four and six-year-old children, sitting frightened in the backseat. But this escape story is not unique to Blackburn. In fact, her aunt Cynthia Watts also narrowly escaped the fire.“That was the most terrifying experience of my life,” Watts said.The taxi driver lived on the East side of town, where the fire began. Immediately, she packed her car and drove south. Minutes later, she was in bumper to bumper traffic. "I don't think we moved an entire inch in an entire hour,” Watts recalled.She tried driving on the Northbound lanes on Skyway Street, but the jam never let up. So she abandoned her car and ran for her life."I just started hoofing it,” she said. Watts walked and walked, passing rows of cars on the town's main road. She was even offered rides from drivers stuck on the road but refused. That was until she heard a co-worker screaming to get into his truck. The next thing she knew, they were in Chico, with absolutely nothing.“Thank you, God. I got out of there, in the nick [of time],” she said. This escape story is also not unique to Watts. In fact, she has nearly 100 extended family members in the small city, all who are now homeless."They have nothing,” Finnigan said. Finnigan is Watt's youngest sister of thirteen children. While she moved to San Diego a few years ago, Finnigan spent most of her life in Paradise. This year, she and her husband Bryan are spending their 22nd wedding anniversary, driving up supplies to her family.“We look like hoarders now, with bags and bags and bags of clothes, shoes, towel, and toys,” Finnigan said. With the help of her friends and co-workers, she was able to collect the donations, including ,000 in cash for the survivors in the Camp Fire. One miracle, Watts said, was that everyone in their family managed to escape in time.  2336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two weeks after their son was killed, the parents of Alexander Mazin spoke to 10News for the first time about the brutal attack.Penelope and Jeffrey Mazin say their son left for the 24 Hour Fitness gym on Midway Dr. around 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2018.“I said 'I love you' and I kissed him on his little fuzzy beard,” remembered his mom, “and he walked out the door. I’m glad I saw him that morning.”He was scheduled to meet with his dad at noon, but by 12:05, his parents were already worried. He was never late.They started calling hospitals and police stations. Little did they know, officers were already searching for him.“Two plainclothes detectives in black cars pulled up and my heart sunk because I knew right then and there something horrible must have happened,” said Jeffrey.The suspect in the case has been identified as Ernesto Castellanos.The Mazins say Castellanos was in a previous relationship with their son’s girlfriend. They say Alexander had been dating the woman for about three months but kept their relationship somewhat private.There were warning signs. Two weeks before the killing, they say Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a 24 Hour Fitness.Castellanos’ whereabouts are unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Two U.S. Army Special Operations soldiers were killed and three others were injured during an aircraft incident, a U.S. Army official confirmed.The incident happened around 7 p.m. Thursday evening during what was described by a U.S. Army Special Operations Command public affairs officer as “routine training.”Department of Defense officials confirmed a Blackhawk helicopter crashed on or near San Clemente Island. An Army Public Affairs Officer sent ABC 10News a statement reading: “An element of U.S. Army Special Operations Command was conducting routine training in the vicinity of Coronado, California, on August 27, when an aircraft incident occurred. Two Soldiers were killed and three were injured. The area has been secured and an investigation into the incident is underway. More information will be released 24-hours following next of kin notification. Our sincere condolences go out the families and friends of the deceased. We thank you for not contacting them during this difficult time.”ABC 10News learned the soldiers were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital following the incident.Brian MacPherson saw the helicopters land at the hospital, "I knew something was really really wrong ... My mind immediately went to sympathy for that soldier because I knew a sacrifice had been made."He said the first responders ran out with a gurney, "it looked like one of the doctors jumping on the gurney, straddling the injured soldier and providing CPR that is just something dramatic it caused me tears driving to work, just thinking about the sacrifice that our military is making even in training.""It saddens me that some of our elite members that are sent to protect our freedoms were injured in training, preparing for the ultimate sacrifice which in this case two of them made for us," he said.Just last month, on July 30, another military training accident occurred off the coast of San Clemente Island when an amphibious assault vehicle accident began to take on water and sank, killing nine service members.ABC 10News will update this story as more information becomes available. 2120

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  An ex-con who kidnapped a coach and a 16-year-old baseball player from a field in Kearny Mesa at gunpoint and made the man drive him to Ramona, where he carjacked a 79-year-old woman to make his getaway, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus two other life terms.Ira Stringer, 48, was convicted last month of 13 felony charges, including kidnapping during a carjacking, kidnapping for extortion and assault with a firearm.Stringer has a long criminal history, including a 1997 conviction for a home-invasion armed robbery in Spring Valley in which he held a family overnight and threatened to kill them."You are the poster child for the three-strikes law," Judge Frederick Maguire told the defendant. "You've demonstrated that you're a danger to the community."Stringer was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery in Orange County when he was charged last year with abducting 27-year-old Dylan Graham and 16-year-old Jack Spencer from Hickman Field in Kearny Mesa, where Graham was giving the teenager a batting lesson on Dec. 23, 2015.Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Stringer approached the victims holding a loaded .357 Magnum and demanded that he be driven to Ramona.Stringer told Graham that he had been in a gunfight and needed to get "far away," according to the prosecutor.During the 40-minute drive to Ramona, Stringer held the gun to Graham's head.Graham said he decided to do something, letting go of the steering wheel and jumping in the back seat in an attempt to get the gun away from Stringer.Graham said Stringer fired three shots, all barely missing him. The victim's car crashed, and was a total loss.Outside the car, Stringer acted like he was hurt and flagged down and carjacked 79-year-old Barbara Roulier and stole her car.Roulier, now 81, told Stringer she has forgiven him for what he did to her that day.Stringer robbed a convenience store in San Diego three days after the kidnapping and carjacking and a few hours after that, robbed a store in Orange County with a shotgun. 2083
