Child care centers across the country have suffered devastating financial losses this year. As scientists continue to look at how COVID-19 affects children, a new Yale University study offers insight into how the virus spreads at day cares."The notion of telling people for several months that COVID-19 is scary, that they have to stay at home in order to avoid it, and then telling child care providers to all of a sudden go back to work without knowing anything about the risks or, even worse, without even bothering to find out what the risk was," said Dr. Walter Gilliam, a child psychiatry and psychology professor at Yale University.Dr. Gilliam helped lead the recent study, which compared transmission rates at more than 57,000 day cares throughout the United States, with transmission rates Johns Hopkins University tracked in those day cares' communities. The study focused on adults only, since they are more likely to be tested and show symptoms."What we found in the end was that child care providers were no more likely to get COVID-19 or hospitalized for COVID-19 if they were open and attending the child care program, versus if they were closed or not. And what that tells us, that at least within the context of the first three months of the pandemic and within the context of all the things that child care programs were doing to keep children safe, transmission rates weren’t primarily being driven by child care programs," said Dr. Gilliam.Dr. Gilliam says child care facilities nationwide have been following disinfecting and cleaning protocols along with strict visitor policies."It's incredible what some of these child care providers were doing. We asked 36 different types of things that they might be doing in order to try and keep children safe and three-quarters of them were doing temperature checks and screening checks every single day. About one-third of them were doing it twice or more a day," said Dr. Gilliam.Dr. Gilliam says one crucial thing the facilities did was place children into cohorts, or small groups, and not mix large groups of children together. Something the YMCA of the USA says its centers are doing and has prevented them from having any COVID-19 outbreaks."It keeps our groups really tight and close together but also if we potentially have an exposure, there’s a small group that we need to work with in order to contact trace," said Heidi Brasher, Senior Director at YMCA of the USA.The YMCA isn't surprised with the Yale University study's results, saying day cares have always been laser-focused when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness with small children."I think it's one of the best things that we’ve done is increase security protocols when it comes to cleanliness, when it comes to temperature checks, when it comes to wellness checks for our staff. It has been one of the great indicators in how we can move through this pandemic time without major outbreaks in our programs," said Brasher.Dr. Gilliam says we need to be doing all we can to financially support our local child care facilities."The bottom-line of the study is that child care programs do not seem to pose a threat to communities in terms of transmission but that does not mean that communities do not pose a threat to child care," said Dr. Gilliam.And keeping COVID-19 rates down in communities will not only help child care providers, but ensure they are able to stay open once the pandemic is over. 3440

Then a "thank you" bonus.Now, Kroger employees will have to be satisfied with gradual increases in wages and benefits.CEO Rodney McMullen said Thursday that Kroger will not re-instate the popular hazard-pay benefits it announced in March and continued into June.This despite continued calls by union officials to bring back the -per-hour wage boost that Kroger and other grocery chains had been paying their essential workers.Kroger held its annual meeting Thursday, an event in which McMullen usually fields questions from local reporters. This year, McMullen agreed to talk by phone, saying that the company will see some permanent changes from the global pandemic that caused food shortages, surging revenue, binge buying and changes in consumer spending habits.Kroger's local employment increased 33% to 20,000 since the pandemic began, while the company hired 100,000 people nationwide.McMullen expects Kroger’s total employment — which peaked at 560,000 — to remain above 500,000 going forward. He also expects digital sales to remain at higher levels than the company achieved prior to COVID-19.And he believes the company will benefit from a permanent shift toward eating at home.“What we’re finding is people enjoy cooking more than they thought they would — at least, that’s what they’re telling us,” McMullen said. “They especially enjoy doing it with their kids, because it gives you a reason to spend time together. If your kids are happy, you’re happy.”McMullen also foresees a permanent shift towards higher wages, even if it doesn’t come in the form of hazard pay.“We had planned on incrementally investing 0 million a year in wages,” he said. “This year, that’ll end up being 0 million, and that’s brought our average hourly rate to higher than . When you include the value of our benefits, that takes it up north of an hour.”In October 2018, Kroger told Wall Street analysts its annual hourly wage was .47. That means it has climbed at least 3.7% in the last 20 months.McMullen said Kroger spent 0 million on temporary wage and benefit adjustments in the first quarter, which ended May 23.“We had the initial huge pandemic buying stock-up, and we were having our associates working around the clock,” McMullen said. “Now, we’re investing a lot in terms of (extending) our emergency leave program. We’re also continuing to invest aggressively in terms of safety and protection as we learn about it, providing masks for our associates and those things.”On the topic of wages, McMullen said Kroger will not join the ranks of companies cutting pay as one way of coping with coronavirus.“At this point, that is not something that we’ve talked about or evaluated,” he said. “It’s not something that would be high on our list of things to do.”Kroger is one of 19 local publicly traded companies that have not announced coronavirus pay cuts for executives. Its SEC filing on pay says “certain aspects of our compensation programs may later be revised or modified once the compensation committee has had an opportunity to fully evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on our business.”McMullen said Kroger is not in the same predicament as the 600 U.S. companies that have so far announced pay cuts for top executives.“We’re in the hiring mode as opposed to furloughing,” he said. “You obviously feel bad for the companies that have to make those decisions and you feel really bad for the people directly affected.”UFCW Local 75 President Kevin Garvey hasn't given up on renewing hazard pay for Kroger employees."Same store sales up 18% and operating profits up over 50% from the first quarter in 2019," he said. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man who allegedly stabbed and seriously injured another man with a screwdriver during a San Ysidro street robbery pleaded not guilty Friday to attempted murder, robbery and vandalism charges.Eduardo Hernandez Oliveros, 22, is accused of robbing the victim just before 7:30 a.m. Sept. 17 in the 600 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard.Police said the victim was using his cell phone when Oliveros confronted him on the street and asked to use the phone. Before the victim could react, Oliveros allegedly snatched the phone out of his hand and took off.Deputy District Attorney Daniel Shim alleged the victim chased Oliveros down and a "physical struggle" ensued, culminating in the defendant stabbing the victim in the face and neck with a screwdriver.Bystanders called police, who responded and arrested Oliveros, who faces more than 25 years in state prison if convicted of all charges, according to the prosecutor.The victim, whose name was not released, was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the San Diego Police Department, which alleged that Oliveros "admitted he was trying to kill the victim."Oliveros has a prior attempted murder conviction for stomping on his girlfriend's head, stabbing her in the leg and telling her he was going to kill her, according to Shim. He was found guilty in 2015 in Riverside County, according to the criminal complaint.Bail was set at million for Oliveros, who is due back in court Oct. 14 for a readiness conference. 1503

They’ve been making their own coffee for three months, four months now, and they want to go get a coffee that tastes like real coffee from a real espresso machine,” said Detweiler.He said another draw has been thanks to his business partner, the owner of Keto Dessert Company. James Baum usually delivers his sugar-free desserts to various locations in the Chula Vista area, so the partnership means one central place for locals to find his treats.Baum said his drive to sell keto dessert comes from his personal background.“They just thought I was a slow learner and then I got older and took this super long test of hundreds and hundreds of questions and realized I’m autistic,” said Baum.He said a sugar-free diet can benefit people with autism so he started the company as a way to bring dessert to keto diets.
