SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues. The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When faced with a hopeless medical diagnosis, a second opinion could save a person's life. Doctors at UC San Diego Health hope to make getting a second opinion easier and more affordable through their new Neurosurgery Second-Opinion Program. "They either feel affirmed in the clinical opinion they've already received or maybe have access to a surgical treatment that might not otherwise be offered to them," said Dr. Alex Khalessi, Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego Health. Through a secure online platform, UC San Diego Health offers easy access to world-renowned neurosurgeons through the program. The service costs patients 0, which Dr. Khalessi says is a few hundred dollars less than other programs nationwide. He says their goal is to make the program accessible to those who need it, even those thousands of miles away. "This is really an opportunity I think to give patients who are dealing with a problem they've never had to think of before a day in their lives, access to a person who spends every day thinking about that problem," said Dr. Khalessi.San Diego resident Glenn Callan credits a second opinion from Dr. Khalessi's team for saving his wife Patricia's life. While in remission for breast cancer doctors at their original San Diego hospital discovered a large tumor in Patricia's brain, but said the tumor was inoperable. "Devastating. You just think you escape this and then have this metastatic cancer go to the brain, it's unbelievable, surreal," said Glenn.Rather than accepting the original diagnosis, the Callan's went to UC San Diego Health, where doctors successfully removed the tumor."Things that would have been a death sentence or permanently disabling even five years ago, now we have a lot of very effective options to treat those problems," said Dr. Khalessi. The Neurosurgery Second-Opinion Program is available now for patients.UC San Diego Health hopes to soon pilot similar programs for oncology and orthopedics. 2008

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Health received its first batch of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, and the health care provider expects another shipment next week.“We expect next week to perhaps get 5,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine,” said Dr. Charles Daniels, Chief Pharmacy Officer at UC San Diego Health. Daniels added they could receive the shipment as soon as Monday or Tuesday, but no date has been finalized. The Moderna vaccine is still awaiting emergency use authorization from the FDA, which it could receive this week. Pfizer’s vaccine was the first to get such approval last week.UC San Diego received close to 3,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine Tuesday and plans to begin administering shots to its highest risk health care workers at its Hillcrest and La Jolla locations Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said California was expected to get 393,000 more doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week, on top of the 327,000 it received this week. Newsom said California is also slated to receive 672,000 doses of Moderna’s vaccine by the end of the month.San Diego County has not given an estimated timeline to receive the Moderna vaccine or how large a shipment it expects.UC San Diego Health was part of the Moderna trial, but Dr. Daniels says it is not the reason for their access to the vaccine. He believes it was coordinated through the University of California Health. 1404

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones. The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. The county's unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in July, the same as a year earlier. There are still about 57,000 San Diegans who are unemployed. 1683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego and the San Diego Police Department are investigating a series of incidents where a man reportedly exposed himself several times so far this year. According to the university, from January through March of 2019, there have been at least six reports of a man who appears to be jogging in the University City area when he reportedly exposed his genitals to women. During all the reported incidents, the suspect ran up to female victim and exposed himself before running away. San Diego Police detectives are still investigating the patterns of the six incidents. But Lt. Justin Scott told 10News, most of the incidents happened during the last afternoon/early evening hours in the UTC South area. The man is described as a white or Hispanic man in his 20s or 30s, approximately 5’ 5” to 5’ 10” tall with a beard in most of the incidents. The suspect has been seen wearing black or gray running shorts and a green or black hoodie pulled up. None of the incidents happened on the UC San Diego campus, but some of the victims were students, police said. The university says anyone who has been sexually assaulted or subject to other forms of sexual misconduct or harassment should report the incident to university officials and San Diego Police Northern Division. 1298
