SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at a middle school in Vista says a look inside her classroom reveals her concerns about the lack of social distancing.Laura Whitehouse’s classroom at Rancho Minerva Middle school. The history teacher has been at the school for seven years, and for the first time, she is anxious about going to school."It’s frightening. It’s frightening," said Whitehouse.She says her fears stem from the lack of social distancing. Her classes have 34 kids, with two kids sitting at each table right next to each other."Distance between each table is about two feet. They’re just on top of each other," said Whitehouse.Whitehouse says the kids are supposed to wear masks, but she sometimes has to remind them to put their masks on, and to maintain social distance."They want to clump together. They want to go to each other’s desk," said Whitehouse.After a few days of in-person learning, Whitehouse on Tuesday received plexiglass for her desk and a HEPA air purifier, but she worries it’s not close to being enough. She says there’s no cleaning between classes, as new students rotate in."The germs that are accumulating are just crazy," said Whitehouse.Amid her concerns, there have been at least four positive COVID-19 cases in the Vista Unified School District, sparking new rules about what will trigger a school to revert to distance learning.Whitehouse, who has asthma, says the new rules don’t address what’s putting her and her students most at risk."I am afraid for them. I just want them and their families to be healthy," said Whitehouse.She’s hoping for more cleaning, and more hybrid learning to reduce the number of kids in the classroom."The fear is this is just going to continue to get worse," said Whitehouse.The teachers union tells ABC 10News they are preparing an OSHA complaint detailing the classroom conditions. Superintendent of Schools Matt Doyle emailed ABC 10News the following statement:"... We have spent more than 2 million dollars on personal protective equipment for our staff and schools. These include facemasks, face shields, gloves, plexiglass barriers for teachers and students, HEPA air filters, additional outside sinks, electrostatic disinfecting machines, posters, and more. Every teacher has been given these supplies ... We will continue to work proactively with teachers and staff to make sure that they get what they need in their classrooms." 2410

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team of scientists at UC San Diego is getting into the beach business."We looked around and said 'what's the most important thing that we could possibly make?" said Biology Professor Stephen Mayfield. "And that answer is obvious. Flip flops and surfboards."Much more important than the products themselves is what they are made of. Mayfield wants to make plastic products out of more sustainable materials than the traditional petroleum. He says extracting the oil from algae is a much cleaner process. And because it is biodegradable, old and worn-out flip-flops and surfboards won't sit in landfills for thousands of years.The surfboards are virtually indistinguishable from traditional boards, and only cost about five dollars more. Mayfield says about a dozen professional surfers are already using algae boards in worldwide competition.His team at UCSD is working with a local manufacturer to bring the boards to market. Mayfield expects them to be ready by the end of spring.The flip flops are currently in the prototype stage. Mayfield plans to distribute several pairs to UCSD students this summer for testing. He hopes they will be ready for sale to the public by next year."My dream would be if we could make all the flip-flops in the world out of this material. This would have an enormous benefit to the planet."Mayfield's team are experimenting with the chemistry to control how quickly the flip-flops will biodegrade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A UC San Diego fraternity was suspended as the school investigates multiple sexual assault allegations against some of its members. According to a report by The UCSD Guardian campus newspaper, at least four female students claimed they were sexually assaulted by members of the Sigma Chi fraternity in incidents over the course of the academic year. Details of the accusations came to light during sorority meetings last month, where chapter residents read written accounts from the alleged victims. An anonymous student who was at one of the meetings told the school newspaper that one woman claimed she was drugged at a Sigma Chi party when a fraternity member handed her a spiked drink that rendered her unconscious. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Albertsons LLC, Safeway Inc., and The Vons Companies, Inc. have agreed to pay at least 0,000 after an investigation by the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) over illegal business practices.The investigation stemmed from the grocery stores' "Monopoly" game promotion, in which customers received "Monopoly" coupons toward discounts and potentially prizes. ABC said the violations arose out of sales of alcohol included in the 2018 promotion.The "Monopoly" promotion was held at Albertsons stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Pac N Save, and Pavilions locations.The promotion advertised certain beer brands by MillerCoors as part of the game. Customers received additional chances to win prizes if they purchased those brands, according to ABC."This particular violation gave these retailers a competitive advantage by offering consumers a gift or premium for purchasing alcoholic beverage products," ABC Director Jacob Appelsmith said in a release.ABC filed action against nearly 600 stores across California, accusing the companies of violation several regulations.
