CANTON, Ohio — A 25-year-old Ohio woman has been charged for allegedly starving two dogs locked in a cage, causing one of the animals to eat the other after it died, according to court records.Court records state that on or about April 5, Jessica J. Swinehart locked a beagle in a cage with a German shepherd-mix and starved the animals. When the beagle died, the other dog ate it to survive. When authorities found the German shepherd, it appeared to have lost nearly two-thirds of its body weight. It was still locked in the cage with the decaying beagle.An arrest warrant was filed April 8 and she was later arrested.Swinehart has been charged with two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.A future court date is pending. 779

Briscoe Cain went to Facebook after seeing a homework assignment regarding U.S. President Donald Trump.The lesson was teaching 7th-grade students how to inference using 10 student-written essays at Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District. The assignment required students to read an excerpt from "Trump Against American Values" by Parker, and then answer the questions that followed. The first question asked, "Which of the following conclusions would the author most likely agree with?" The answer to the questions was, "Donald Trump should not be president."The second question asked what the reader would infer from reading the passage. The answer being, "Mexican Americans are the major group upset with President Trump."Cain said in his Facebook post that the superintendent of the district, Randal O'Brien, is aware of the issue and has taken corrective action. "It is our understanding the [sic] he and his administration have done all that state law allows them to do at this time," Cain said. "Superintendent O’Brien is and remains the right man for the job."Cain was made aware of the post by Chris Felder, a concerned parent at the school. “This was an assignment my 7th grade daughter received that I found to be very out of place to say the least," Felder commented, according to Cain's post. "This type of non-factual rhetoric has no place in our schools regardless of who the president is. My children have experienced great teachers in the classroom, but have also had to put up with those who see their role as indoctrinators, not educators. (AP) — A 20-year-old attacker carried out a series of stabbings and carjackings at a suburban Portland shopping center and in a nearby town Wednesday, killing one person and wounding three others before being arrested, authorities said.Police in the city of Beaverton said two people were stabbed inside a Wells Fargo bank and a man was stabbed at a gym next door.After the stabbings, the assailant stole the man’s car and drove into the suburb of Tigard, where he stole another woman’s car and stabbed her, Officer Matt Henderson said at a news conference. At least 28 churches around the country have now opened their doors to people fearing deportation and family separation. First Unitarian Church in Denver was one of the first to adopt the designation.Reverend Mike Moran with First Unitarian Church says it hasn’t always been easy.“We have received threats. We have received bomb threats, personal threats,” he explains.Members of the church formed a volunteer guard network, partly because of those threats. They patrol the church and guard the door almost 24-hours per day.Randy Chase, 69, is one of the guards. He spends much of his time on duty checking to make sure doors are closed and locked.“These instructions envision talking to officials and officers through the door, through this crack in the door and passing paper back and forth,” says Chase, pointing to a piece of paper taped to a wall.Chase says he worries his friendly nature may be taken by immigration agents as an invitation to come in. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have come under scrutiny in the past for what some critics say are tricky tactics.Chase says he’s concerned those tactics could affect Jeanette Vizguerra, the woman he is trying to protect.Vizguerra has spent more than two decades in the U.S. and hasn’t been able to get citizenship. An experienced Arkansas hunter was found severely injured in the woods Tuesday night, his body riddled with antler puncture wounds. He later died.The 66-year-old man from Yellville had shot a deer, and made plans with his nephew to field dress the deer's body together, police told CNN.When his nephew found him, the hunter was alert and talking, and was even able to call his wife. But he stopped breathing by the time paramedics could get him to the hospital, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said.Officials are not certain that the antler wounds are the official cause of his death, the commission said in a statement. He may have died from other medical issues such as a heart attack, the statement said, but there will be no autopsy.Injuries resulting from wounded deer are not uncommon, said Joe Dale Purdom from the Game and Fish Commission.On occasion, hunters may approach a deer thinking it is dead when it is only stunned or injured. Usually, they jump up and run away, sometimes injuring hunters in the process, Purdom told CNN.But this is the first time he has seen a hunter die after approaching a stunned deer.Purdom said it is generally good hunting practice to wait 15 to 30 minutes before approaching a shot deer to make sure it is dead.The victim, who had lived in Yellville for more than 20 years, was an experienced hunter, so Purdom said he doubted that his injuries were a result of poor hunting practice.
