SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. — Authorities are asking people to be on alert after a man in a white SUV attempted to lure a 10-year-old girl in San Tan Valley, Arizona on Wednesday. According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 4 p.m., a 10-year-old girl was walking with a friend near a park in the North Pecan Creek neighborhood when a man driving a white SUV pulled up next to them.The man reportedly told the girl that her brothers were in a serious accident and that she needed to go with him. The girl then asked the man what the "code word" was, but the man did not know and drove off."Kudos to the parents of this child for having a code word and talking about to their children about stranger danger," said Sheriff Mark Lamb. "We hope by putting this out, it will encourage parents to have that conversation and create a plan with their children, so they know what to do if they are in that situation."The SUV has been reportedly seen circling the park several times a day, according to children who live in the neighborhood. “This is generally what I consider a pretty safe area, I’ve never heard of anything bad,” said Patrick McDonald, who lives nearby.“This one time, it saved my daughters life,” said Brenda James, the girl’s mother.James talked to KNXV and the media so that other parents could learn about code words as she did.“We actually just came up that few months ago. So it was something really recent from a story that I read,” James said.The man is described as being possibly in his 40s with a short beard. (KGTV) — Santee voters this November will weigh in on two measures that deal with limits on serving as a City Council member or as Mayor.Measure Q and R each intend to address term limits on City Council and Mayoral positions in the city of Santee, however, they each take a different approach to limit how long someone can serve.The text of Measure Q reads as follows:City of Santee - Measure Q: "Shall the measure amending the Santee Municipal Code to require that no person shall serve as an 'Elected Official,' defined to include the offices of Mayor and Member of the City Council, for more than twelve years, or three terms, whichever is less, with any portion of term, whether by election or appointment, counting as a full term, be adopted?"Measure Q would not allow anyone to serve as either Mayor or a City Council member, or any combination of those positions, for more than 12 years, or three four-year terms, with any portion of a term counting as a full term.The competing measure, Measure R, reads as follows:City of Santee - Measure R: "Shall an ordinance amending the Santee Municipal Code to establish a three-term lifetime limit on City Council service and a separate two-term lifetime limit on Mayoral service, be adopted?"In other words, no one can serve as Mayor for more than two, four-year terms and, separately and in addition, as a City Council member for three, four-year terms, regardless of the district a person represented. SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Federal and state agencies spent most of Sunday morning at Truth Aquatics headquarters in Santa Barbara, the company that operated the Conception. Investigators served a search warrant at around 9 a.m. looking for safety, maintenance, and training records for the boat. Agents also took pictures of the company's two other dive boats. The search warrants are considered "pretty standard" as part of the investigation to find out the cause of the fire and if any crimes were committed. The search comes just days after the owner of Truth Aquatics preemptively filed a lawsuit that could limit the payouts to the victim's families.Thirty-four people were killed in the early morning boat fire on Labor Day. One of the victims was identified by family as Nicole Quitasol. Quitasol lived in San Diego. She worked at Nicky Rottens in Coronado. The Santa Barbara Sheriff says the passengers were trapped by the flames. The Conception's captain and four crew members were the only ones to escape.Coast Guard records show the Conception passed it's most recent inspections with zero safety violations. Authorities are looking into how batteries and electronics were stored and charged and what crew members were doing at the time of the fire. All but one of the victim's bodies have been recovered. The search was called off last week due to weather but is expected to resume on Tuesday. The conception is still underwater. 1456

SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a van early Monday morning while he was attempting to cross a San Ysidro street, police said.It happened shortly before 1:10 a.m. in the 400 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, stepped off the east curb of East San Ysidro Boulevard and was struck by a 64-year-old man driving a 1999 Chevrolet Astro van in the northbound lanes, Buttle said.The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Buttle said.The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, Buttle said.Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors in the collision, Buttle said. (KGTV) — Four Congressmen, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas, and Mike Levin, participated in an all-access tour of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry Friday afternoon. Upon finishing the tour, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said sternly, “There is no crisis at the border. There is no justification for an emergency declaration at the border.” This was a direct contradiction to President Trump's reasoning to build a southern border wall. It has been almost one month since the Department of Homeland Security began implementing the new Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). The policy forces migrants from Central and South America entering the United States without papers, or those claiming asylum, to in Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings. According to the Mexican Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice, Tijuana has the fifth highest murder rate in the world. Because of that, Representative Juan Vargas (CA-51-D) strongly rejected MPP.“To be sent back to a place like Tijuana, where they don’t have family, friends, where they don’t have the social connections to be helped and to be safe, I don’t think we should be doing it. I think it is the wrong thing to do. I don’t think it’s our American values," said Vargas.Previous to the new MPP, migrants were released into the United States after their initial process, under the assumption they would return to US Immigration Court at a later time to receive their final status. But Homeland Security said that too many migrants would skip court, and disappear into the US as fugitives. This afternoon, Majority Leader Hoyer used the President’s coined slogan to refute the claim. “That’s fake news. 97% of people show up. That’s a better percentage than the people who show up who are on parole in the United States of America for crimes,” Representative Hoyer said. After touring the facility, the Democrats agreed, solving the immigration issue is not as simple as building a physical wall. Overcrowding the ports with seemingly endless asylum seekers is not the answer either. They were all impressed by the work being done at San Ysidro and hoped all other ports implement the high tech protocols conducted there.“This national emergency declaration serves no purpose other than a political one,” Representative Mike Levin (CA-49-D) said. “If we truly want to solve the problem to the extent to one exists, we need to invest in the technology of the future, just as we have done here at San Ysidro, at all 330 ports of entry.” 2601
