SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Intense heat is sparking fires and sending San Diegans to the coast seeking relief."The temperatures today are pretty extreme," Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said, adding the brush is dry from the heat and lack of rain making Wednesday's forecasted record heat very dangerous.A brush fire sparked in Ramona near Ramona St. and Boundary Ave around 11 a.m.The triple-digit heat causing concern for Fire Chief Jason Lambirth with the U.S. Forest Service, "we really take care of our own people, keep a close eye on them, make sure they're hydrated with water and Gatorade and go from there."Firefighters kept the blaze within a couple of acres, according to Shoots.A huge relief to neighbors, like Leanne Plunkett who has lived in Ramona for 44 years. "Oh I'm relaxed now, but it was pretty hectic for a while!" Plunkett said.She was stepping into the shower when law enforcement knocked on their door to issue evacuation orders. Plunkett said she jumped out, threw on clothes, and started packing jewelry and important documents.She said they had to evacuate twice in the past, including the Cedar Fire.The heat taking its toll on San Diegans across the county. Many, like Oscar Fuentes from El Cajon, headed to the beach."It was starting to get to 110 degrees out there so we decided to hit the beach... It's a lot more tolerable that's for sure it's really nice, I expect it's going to be a lot better when we get in that water."He's not alone according to Sgt. Lonnie Stephens with San Diego Fire Rescue's Lifeguard Division."We're still seeing elevated beach crowds on the weekends and during the weekdays." He said normally crowds dissipate after Labor Day but that hasn't happened yet."Throughout this heat, which has been ongoing for quite some time, yes we have had some citizens that have had some heat-related illness." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local and federal authorities raided four San Diego County homes Wednesday as part of a money laundering investigation.Agents served one of those warrants at an El Cajon home at about 7 a.m., according to neighbors. Agents could be seen removing several items from the property. 10News observed agents searching through the first and second floors of the home. Neighbors told 10News agents made requests over a speaker for the home's residents to exit the property. Neighbors added that eventually, the announcements stopped and they heard what they described as a small explosion, before agents entered the home in tactical gear.RELATED: Ex-Wells Fargo banker indicted for money laundering appears in courtLauren Mack, with the Department of Homeland Security, told 10News the raid was one of five instances in which agents served search warrants as part of an investigation into a suspected money laundering conspiracy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Valley's Gordon Biersch restaurant may be closing, but the brewery location will live on under a new local eatery.Puesto will take over the location of the well-known restaurant after it closes in July, according to the company. The Mission Center Road spot will be the Mexican restaurant's third location.Gordon Biersch is set to leave Mission Valley on July 16, though no reason was immediately given for the closure, according to paperwork filed by the company.
