TASHKENT, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren made three proposals to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for its future development here on Monday.At a business session of the 43rd annual meeting for ADB Board of Governors that kicked off Monday, Xie said the ADB should fully tap its potential as a knowledge platform in seeking ways for Asia 's future development.It should also promote collective economic expansion of Asia by deepening regional economic cooperation, said Xie.Thirdly, the ADB should raise its assistance efficiency and enhance its capacity for institution building, while making active contribution to the regional prosperity and stability, he added.All Asian members are still facing difficult tasks of retaining economic growth and adjusting economic structure, because the basis for world's recovery from the global financial crisis has not been consolidated so far, said the Chinese minister.On the sidelines of ADB's first annual meeting in Central Asia, Xie also met with Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Uzbek First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Rustam Azimov and heads of delegations including Bangladesh, New Zealand and Fiji.

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.
UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.
