We know when disasters strike, there are no quick fixes,” said Ellen Lehman, president of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.Gifts can be made to the Nashville Neighbors Fund at www.CFMT.org/neighbors. or by calling The Community Foundation at (615) 321-4939. Musicians of the Nashville Symphony have created a fund to raise money for furloughed members due to the COVID-19 shutdown. The Nashville Symphony Players’ Assembly set up the fund on their website. They're raising the money for 83 members of the orchestra who are still on a furlough that could last a full year. Click here to donate to the Nashville Symphony members. "It's really terrifying. You have a lot of single parents in the orchestra," said Melinda Whitley, a long time viola player for the symphony.Whitley said she knows of at least two musicians who have had to sell their home because of the furlough, which started on July 1."No one prepares, not on a musician's salary, to spend a year with no income," she said.To encourage people to donate, and to continue to play their music, the Musicians of the Nashville Symphony have continued to play live music online. This past weekend an online concert was held at St. George Episcopal Church in Nashville.A number of concerts have also been planned to help raise money for the musicians."This is Nashville. And it's a very creative place and a supportive place. If we can continue to serve the community the best way we know how then they will continue to help us. That's the best we can do for ourselves at this point," said Whitley.Whitley said she's worried more musicians will leave the orchestra if something doesn't change soon. She's worried unemployment won't last them a whole year. This story was first reported by Kyle Horan at WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 1548

Multiple people were busy Monday morning in Fort Pierce rescuing baby sea turtles that were stuck in seaweed from the high surf and strong winds of Hurricane Irma. The rescue was occurring at 10 a.m. at Jetty Park. A man named Eric said he spoke with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who told him to put wet sand in a bucket and collect the stranded turtles.    FWC originally said to put the turtles back into the water but later changed their mind.“Originally FWC told me to put them back into the water, but we noticed that they were just coming right back onto the shore because the waves are just too strong for these little creatures,” said Eric.He said when other people in the area saw what he was doing, they jumped in to help with the rescue. The group of people were frantically digging through a massive mound of seaweed with their bare hands to save as many turtles as possible.By 10 a.m., the group had rescued about 50 to 60 baby sea turtles and nine eggs that were not broken. Unfortunatly they found about 20 small turtles that did not survive Irma.FWC said they come by later to collect the turtles.  1181
