MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, put a national spotlight on systemic racism and social inequities. Just a few weeks later, the state’s unemployment rate for people of color is further hitting home how real and current those issues are.“It’s really shocking that number is the way that it is,” said Kimberly Jones.Jones is an African American woman and was a Minnesota-based flight attendant recruiter, who lost her job in March.According to data from Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development, she is a part of the half of all Black workers in the state who have lost their jobs and have had to file for unemployment during the past five months. Right now, Black workers in Minnesota are almost three times as likely to still be unemployed, compared to white workers. That’s significantly higher than the national average, which also shows Black workers across the country struggling with unemployment at a higher rate than white workers.“We have been suffering and going through this kind of social inequity for so long,” said Jones. “It is sad to say you almost get used to the norm. I get used to the redlining. I get used to not being able to get a job. I get used to the discrimination. My hope is that with everything that has happened together the way that it has, it will begin to shed light on things that absolutely have to change.”The issue of people of color having disproportionately higher unemployment in Minnesota and around the country is not a new issue or one just isolated to this economic downturn, according to experts like William Rodgers with Rutgers University. Rodgers is the Chief Economist and a Professor of Public Policy at Rutgers’ Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.“The big concern there that I have is that this is potentially writing the same rules we have seen in previous recessions,” said Rodgers. “African Americans, Latinos, and other groups, but especially African Americans, they are the first ones to be fired and they are the last ones to be hired when there is a recovery.”Given the recent national awareness and concern over systemic inequities for people of color, there is action being taken to change the course of history this time.“Employers need deep help in addressing the institutional racism that exists within their walls and to determine really what kind of actions they can take to really start to create new policies and practices and new ways of being as it relates to how they hire talent,” said Towanna Black.Black is the Founder and CEO of Minnesota’s Center of Economic Inclusion. Her organization recently created several new positions to help private companies and other employers address their role in this inequity and unemployment disparity.“We do an assessment upfront that helps employers understand, almost across 200 dimensions, what is happening inside your business and how those policies and practices either help your employees move forward economically or hold them back,” said Black. “We are glad to say that employers, not only in Minneapolis/St. Paul but across the country are reaching out.”While employers work on change, someone like Jones has changed her mind about returning to the workforce that historically has worked against her and other people of color. She has instead decided to work on a nonprofit passion project, turning her home into a shelter for woman called The Genesis House Service Corporation. 3489

MILWAUKEE -- An organization claims Catholic values are being threatened over a "Pride Prom" at Marquette University.An online petition has thousands of signatures to stop an LGBT event slated to take place Saturday at the university.University leaders say despite the opposition, the event will go on as planned.Marquette graduate Cameron Sanchez says at first, he didn't take the petition seriously."But then I went online and saw it had 18,000 signatures," he said.The petition is hosted on a website called "The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property," also known as TFP.John Ritchie, TFP Student Action Director did not consent to an on-camera interview, but sent a statement though email. Ritchie said that promoting Pride Prom, "...is like promoting drugs for those who suffer from a drug addiction.""They're hurtful, but they're not Marquette. More than three weeks after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, the White House is expected to unveil some proposals on guns and school safety."The President and White House are going to be laying out more specifics -- it's going to be a series of proposals," White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah said on ABC's "This Week."Shah said the proposals will be legislative and administrative and also will include recommendations for states. The White House will also be forming a task force to study the issue, Shah said.Shah avoided answering whether the White House will call for universal background checks, which President Donald Trump has said he would support, and instead spoke about improving the current background check system. The White House backs the "Fix NICS" bill introduced by Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, and Sen. Millions of stimulus checks have gone out, but there are people still wondering where their checks are. Some might have thrown them out by mistake, but a local woman tells us she’s been getting the runaround about her check after complaining to the post office. Here’s how you can rebound from possible lost or stolen stimulus money.“I’m very hurt. I feel very let down,” said Racquel Hill from Warrensville Heights. She has no idea where her stimulus check is. “It’s something that I could still use. My children could use. And that I am in need of, she told us.She’s a single mother of two baby girls.“From February basically up to now, I’ve been without.”Hill showed us the IRS website reported her check was mailed on April 24. However, she also has a different address now. She had been living in Mayfield Heights.“Every time I contact (a representative of the Mayfield Heights Post Office), she tells me a different story,” said Hill. “She tells me, ‘Oh, we never received it. Then, she tells me it’s been forwarded back to the IRS. Then, she tells me it’s been forwarded to Warrensville Heights Post Office.”A spokesperson for the post office would not confirm if the overall USPS has received any similar complaints here or around the country.“Then where is it? Is someone stealing the check? Did someone mishandle the check?” questioned Hill. “I want to know what happened to the check and how many other people this has happened to.”“I know sometimes people aren’t really sure…what that check is,” said Scott Balfour. He investigates possible mail fraud through the USPS Office of Inspector General in Cleveland. He told us his office has had less than a handful of complaints about possible lost or stolen checks. “As an investigator what we are able to do is make contact with an investigator from the Treasury Department,” explained Special Agent Balfour. “They will let us know if that particular check has been cashed by someone it wasn’t intended for.”Hill told us Balfour is looking into her stimulus check problems. Meanwhile, The IRS within the last week or so sent out a warning about COVID-19 and stimulus check fraud. If you find that you haven’t gotten your check or debit card and you think it’s been stolen, you can file a claim at Tips.TIGTA.Gov.“Several different federal agencies are involved in this effort to monitor the mailing of those to make sure those checks get into the hands of people who deserve them,” said Balfour.He also said you can contact his office through USPSOIG.GOV or call 888-USPS-OIG.Hill said she is happy her case is getting attention but feels others might not be. “I feel sorry for me but I also feel sorry for other families, as well, who may be enduring this type of pain,” she told us.Keep in mind that the IRS still hasn’t gotten all of the checks out in the mail just yet, and there are many other reasons including filing status in the past two years that could impact how soon you see stimulus money.WEWS' Jonathan Walsh was first to report this story. 3023
