Country legend Garth Brooks started the County Music Awards on Wednesday night by paying respects to the 12 people killed at the Borderline Bar & Grill last week."On behalf of our country music community I want to say that tonight's show is lovingly dedicated to the 12 individuals who we lost far too soon just a week ago tonight at the Borderline in Thousand Oaks, California," Brooks said as a sea of camera phone lights illuminated the stadium. "Tonight let's celebrate their lives, let the music unite us with love and their enduring memory. So please join me now in a moment of silence."The Borderline Bar & Grill, is a college country bar 40 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. The night of November 7 turned deadly when a gunman forced his way into the bar and opened fire.Police later identified the gunman as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old US Marine Corps veteran. He was pronounced dead after officers arrived. 943

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A celebration of life was held in Coronado Thursday night for Nicole Quitasol, the San Diego woman killed in a boat fire off Santa Cruz Island. The event was held at Nicky Rottens, and restaurant officials said the celebration of life was also to help the fundraising efforts to support Quitasol’s family. Quitasol was on the dive trip with four family members, her coworkers posted on Facebook. "Nicole has worked with our Nicky Rottens Coronado family for years, and she will be remembered as an adventurous & loving soul," wrote Bryn Butolph, who described Quitasol as smart and loving.RELATED: San Diego woman killed in deadly Conception boat fire off Santa Barbara"She will be greatly missed," Butolph added. He told 10News Quitasol was devoted to her dog, Peanut Butter. The family of five was among the 34 presumed dead following the blaze. All were sleeping below deck when the fire broke out in the early morning hours of Sept. 2. Other victims included students from a Northern California charter school serving grades 7-12, and a marine biologist who owned the diving company and was leading the tour.A GoFundMe account was created to help Quitasol's mother, who lost three children.KCRA in Sacramento identified the other family membersas Nicole’s sister Evan and sister Angela, both from Stockton, and their father Michael and stepmother Fenisa Sison, both from Modesto. 1421

Community Health Centers that care for hundreds of thousands of low-income San Diegans are bracing for deep cuts. Congress has to act by Sept. 30 to maintain the funds to the centers, or services will start to decrease."This conversation is, do you have a doctor when you need one, who will see you?" said Vernita Todd, Vice President of Health Center Partners of Southern California, an association of 17 health centers in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. The centers are concerned about million of federal money that Congress has yet to renew. The money goes to lower the cost of services like primary care, vaccinations, cancer screenings and physicals. It can help turn a visit that would normally cost 0 into a visit. "If they can't afford it, does that mean they'll forego treatment? Will they forego going to the doctor? Will they skip vaccinations for their children?" Todd said. Earlier this month, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, introduced a bill to continue the funding for community health centers. It has 13 bipartisan supporters. Her spokesman says she's exploring different ways to move the legislation forward. Todd says she's not concerned the bill wouldn't pass. She just wants it to come up for a vote. But she's worried Congress isn't paying attention to the health center needs because it's focused on issues like Hurricane recovery, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and Immigration. She says the centers would start taking hits Oct. 1, when money for a program that essentially gets doctors to health centers dries up.Then, on Jan. 1, they would lose the biggest lump sum, which could lead to layoffs, closures, and fewer services. There are six San Diego health center locations, including City Heights, San Ysidro, and Vista. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State football players and their parents were given a pledge to sign, asking them to acknowledge the risk of COVID-19 and take responsibility for their own health and safety, according to a document obtained by ESPN and The Columbus Dispatch. The electronic pledge, called the “Buckeye Pledge,” states that players will agree to COVID-19 testing and potential self-quarantine if they test positive. By signing the pledge, students also agree to report any potential exposure to the virus and agree to monitor their health for potential signs of the virus, the document states.Students who sign the pledge agree to wear a mask or “appropriate PPE” when in any public space and practice social distancing whenever possible, according to the document. The document states that failure to comply with the Buckeye Pledge “may lead to immediate removal of athletic participation privileges (not my athletics scholarship) and/or the inability to use athletics facilities," according to ESPN.Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told ESPN that the pledge is more so intended for educational purposes than it is for liability reasons. To read the full ESPN report, click here. This story was originally published by Camryn Justice at WEWS. 1260
