SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The plaques at the Hillcrest pride monument have been restores after being vandalized in February. According to the Hillcrest Business Association, the repairs cost roughly ,500. All the money came through donations from local businesses, the association said. The plaques were vandalized in early February. Pictures show faces and the pride flag scratched out. RELATED: Fundraiser underway after Hillcrest pride flag plaque vandalized“The fact that there is this hate still out in the community means that we need monuments like this, the pride flag, even more,” said Benjamin Nicholls, the Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association.Due to the lack of security cameras in the area, Nicholls said it’s hard to tell who vandalized the plaque. The monument sits at the corner of University Avenue and Normal Street. 859

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This week, the Del Mar Union School District and Cajon Valley School District went back to in-person classes. However, most public schools in the county are continuing in distance learning.“It’s tiring, to say the least,” said teacher Kelly Martin. She teachers in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.Dawn Harrison also teaches in that district. While she dealt with some technical problems with her first-grade class, she said “it went better than I thought it would go.”Martin said she has been able to make connections with her students even through a computer screen. She also met virtually with each student one-on-one.“It’s been a challenge with tech issues outside of our control… people’s cameras aren’t working, people’s microphones aren’t working. I feel like besides being a teacher, I’ve taken on the role of tech support!” Martin said.ABC 10News first checked in with the teachers at the end of July before the school year started. Since then, Harrison said she has dealt with a rollercoaster of emotions. “Fear, anxiety, stress, a little bit of excitement,” Harrison said. She’s not the only one in her household dealing with an unusual school year. Her husband, Rick Meads, is a teacher at Eastlake High School.“I have 160 students or so. I see most of them every day. There are some that are still struggling with access,” Meads said.He teaches theater, drama, and digital arts. While he said he is missing out on the personal interaction with students, he is adjusting his curriculum.“Instead of doing a fall play this year, we’re going to do a radio show. They’re writing their own script. It’s going to be a Halloween, scary type of thing,” Meads said. They all say being in the classroom with their students is easier that distance learning, which involves a lot more preparation.“I’m definitely working longer hours. The good part is I have no commute,” Martin said.As far as when they will feel comfortable conducting in-person classes again, there is no definitive answer.Meads said it will be a challenge to keep social distance between students. “It’s a nightmare thinking of going back unless it’s really safe,” Meads said. “I really haven’t spent too much time thinking about going back yet. I think I’m so consumed with just staying alive right now!” his wife Dawn said. 2331

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Department of Agriculture is warning residents not to open unsolicited packets of seeds some people reported receiving from China. The department says it has taken 58 calls from people reporting receiving the seeds as of Wednesday afternoon and warns anyone who receives a package to not plant the seeds or throw them away. “The main concern with these seeds is that they were mislabeled and went through customs without an inspection. Seed from other countries might have pests or diseases that don’t exist here. The County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures is constantly looking for invasive pests which can be weeds, insects, or diseases. They can cause a lot of harm and we work hard to eliminate them.”RELATED: Mysterious seeds sent from China to US mailboxesThe department says unopened seed packets should be dropped off at drop boxes at 151 E. Carmel St, San Marcos 92128 or 9325 Hazard Way, San Diego 92123 address. They will then be sent to the USDA for analysis.Anyone unable to drop off the seeds should call 760-752-4700.Kimberly Pierce-Nolan is just one of the San Diego County residents to receive the seeds. She said she didn't think anything of it when it arrived at her Imperial Beach home a few weeks ago."I said 'I don’t remember ordering and I thought maybe I did, or maybe it was a free gift or something,'" she said. She put the package aside until recently, when posts and warnings about the seeds started circulating. She said she's happy she didn't throw it away or plant them, but is nervous that her name, address and phone number were all on the package.Reports of unidentified seeds from China have been popping up across the country. All 50 states have now issued warnings about the packages. The department believes it is all part of a “brushing” scam used to boost ratings for online vendors. The packaging label ranges from jewelry to "handmade flowers," and the seeds on the inside vary in size and shape.“At this time, we don’t have any evidence indicating this is something other than a ‘brushing scam,’ where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales. USDA is currently collecting seed packages from recipients and will test their contents and determine if they contain anything that could be of concern to U.S. agriculture or the environment,” the USDA said.Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said at a briefing on Tuesday that the address labels were forged and that China Post has asked USPS to send those packages to China for investigation. 2618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are hundreds of thousands of school employees across the state who won't be in your child’s virtual classroom, but are making sure school operations continue. They are known as classified staff, but you know many of them as teacher aides, bus drivers, and custodians."I myself am a 38-year custodian," said Ben Valdepena.Valdepena is a school district employee and an essential worker."The kids call me Mr. Ben, but throughout the state of California, there's a Mr. Joe, and there's a Mr. George, and that's a title the kids give you," Valdapena said. He's also the head of the California School Employees Association. The union represents about 250,000 classified employees at more than 750 school districts across the state. Many of those workers will be on the job when the school year starts, but in a bit of a different role.Instead of transporting kids to school, Valdeapna says some buses have been transformed into internet providers."They are now becoming WiFi hotspots where they are actually parking their buses in areas in certain school districts to provide WiFi for the kids in the neighborhood,” Valdapena said.In the Sweetwater Union High School District, bus drivers have been assisting with food distribution, processing free and reduced lunch applications, and distributing books and supplies, among other things. The district said it employs about 1,800 classified employees.A spokesperson explained, "Although we are in distance learning, our classified staff continue to support the daily operations of the sites and the district in a variety of ways that include everything from direct support of student learning, maintenance and operations, nutrition services, business services, and several other areas. For example, we have been working with our classified instructional assistants to not only assist students with distance learning, but also with COVID temperature checks for visitors and staff who come to campus, compliance with COVID safe distances, book and supply collection/distribution, responding to parent questions, and contacting students to ensure they can participate to their fullest."A spokesperson for San Diego Unified School District said, "Even though we are opening online Aug. 31, we are still hopeful of getting physically reopened again when it is safe to do so. All school staff is both preparing for that day, while working to provide the best possible online learning experience. Classified employees are no different in this respect."Valdapena said the state budget protected custodial staff, food service workers, and transportation workers, but there are many other roles within schools."Some of our school districts (districts across the state) have decided to forego that and lay off as many classified employees as they can," Valdapena said. "One of our school districts just laid off over 50% of the classified employees."The Poway Unified School District is in the middle of negotiations with its classified union."We're just starting that conversation to really drill in see what that work looks like and how we go about matching up those that are willing with the need of the district," said Courtney Martin, the president of the Poway School Employees Association. The association is an independent organization. 3306
