Original report follows.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands were without power late Tuesday as a power transformer exploded in the Normal Heights area.The transformer explosion sparking a small fire in the 330 block of El Cajon Blvd., but flames didn't spread to nearby buildings, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. Video at the scene showed sparks showering on the ground below.According to SDG&E's outage map, nearly 7,500 customers in the University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge, and City Heights areas were without power starting just after 5:30 p.m. SDG&E crews were assessing what caused the outage and estimated the outage to be restored by 8:30 p.m., according to the map. 807

Two journalists from WYFF-TV based out of Greenville, South Carolina were killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on their SUV while covering a storm that was causing flooding in the area, the station confirmed. WYFF anchor Mike McCormick and WYFF photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed by the tree that landed on the SUV. The incident happened in Polk County, North Carolina. Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant told WYFF that the SUV's engine was running when authorities reached the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The tree was reportedly 3 feet in diameter. Heavy rain in the area caused the roots of the tree to fail, Tennant told the station. "It personally affected me a little bit because I had done an interview with Mr. McCormick about 10 minutes before we got the call. And we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and I wanted him to stay safe and of course 10 or 15 minutes later we got the call and it was him and his photographer," Tennant said. UPDATE 8:54 p.m. - Nov. 9, 2019SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department has called off Saturday's Amber Alert after determining that the man who reported his vehicle stolen with a child inside filed a false report.The man told officers that his acquaintance, 29-year-old Osman Rahimi, drove off in his vehicle with an 11-year-old inside, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.The man described the boy, named Johnny Diaz, as a Hispanic child, 4 feet tall, wearing a white shirt and “Transformers” pajama pants."Detectives contacted the California Highway Patrol to put out an Amber Alert in an effort to find the boy," said Takeuchi.Oceanside Police Department officers located the vehicle and Rahimi near the Aliso Creek Rest Area but the child was not with Rahimi."SDPD officers took custody of Rahimi and transported him to SDPD headquarters along with the man who made the report, and the Amber Alert was cancelled," said Takeuchi.Takeuchi said they conducted numerous interviews and determined that no child was involved. Detectives are still working to determine if Rahimi is responsible for stealing the car.The man who made the report, who has not yet been identified, may also face charged of filing a false report, according to Takeuchi."While it appears the original report was false, the mission of our department is to protect all life," said Takeuchi.
