The 26-meter-high three-storey alter was restored last year at the temple, located in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan Province. The 600 Buddhists were selected out of 1,000 pious Buddhists nationwide. Shi said that only Buddhists who have passed a long-term inspection and are believed to have a "pre-destined lot" with Buddhism will be allowed to take the ritual and admitted by the temple. "Only Buddhists who practice Buddhism to a high level can be tonsured and allowed to take the ritual," Shi said. The ritual will last 28 days during which time the 600 monks will listen to doctrines, learn Buddhism rituals and manners in the temple. Both Buddhism and Taoism seem to be attractting more believers. An international forum on the "Daode Jing", a classic of Taoism, was held last month and lured 300 Taoists from around the world who wanted to explore the true essence of the classic text.

BEIJING - China said Monday it will use global positioning satellites to ensure food safety at the Beijing Olympics as it steps up efforts to blacklist manufacturers who violate safety regulations. Wang Wei, an executive vice president of the Beijing Olympic Committee, said the high-tech system will monitor food production, processing factories and food hygiene during the games to make sure healthy food is delivered to the 10,500 athletes residing in the Olympic Village. Food products will be affixed with an "Olympic food safety logistics code" and transportation vehicles will be tracked using global positioning satellites, Wang said. He did not provide further details of either plan. "The whole process will be monitored from the start of production through transportation to the end users," Wang said. "We are very confident about ensuring food safety in Beijing." Wang said extra measures would also be taken to ensure food safety for the general public. "During the games some special monitoring mechanisms will also be applied to monitor restaurants and public food sellers to let people know how they can buy safe food," he said. In a separate announcement, Beijing-based Qianxihe Food Group, an Olympic sponsor, said it had begun selling a hormone-free line of pork for the games, a company official said. SHANGHAI: Preliminary investigations showed improper maintenance work had caused a Shanghai gas station explosion on Saturday, which saw four killed and 40 injured.A team of officials from related government agencies is investigating the blast at the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) outlet in Pudong District, reported the Xinmin Evening News Sunday.The station had earlier been suspended on October 11 for safety concerns and was scheduled for reopening Sunday.CNPC did not respond to media queries on the explosion.Most of those injured from the incident have been discharged from hospital.Two of the 29 blast victims sent to Punan Hospital died while 26 were discharged Sunday morning.A 49-year-old woman who was hit on the head by a piece of blast debris is still under observation at the hospital.She was said to have been in her apartment close to the station when the explosion shattered her window.The 13 other injured who were sent for treatment at the Pudong branch of Renji Hospital have been discharged.The explosion on Saturday occurred at 7:50 am in the junction of South Yanggao and Pusan roads.Two maintenance workers on the site were killed instantly.
