SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police Sergeant was arrested Friday after the department was tipped off to individuals reportedly soliciting sex from minors.Police say Joseph Ruvido, 49, was arrested in Carmel Valley and charged with one felony count of soliciting sex with a minor. A search warrant was served at the 21-year veteran's residence and he was taken into custody without incident.Ruvido was assigned to the SDPD Watch Commander's Office, approving reports and and bookings. Prior to that, Ruvido was a patrol sergeant with the department's Eastern division, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit."I assure you Sgt. Ruvido will be held accountable both criminally and administratively," Nisleit said. Police identified one of the individuals as Ruvido and opened an investigation leading to his arrest.Once Ruvido was identified, investigators conducted 24/7 surveillance with investigators from the San Diego District Attorney's Office, according to SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell.SDPD declined to share any further details to protect the investigation, Nisleit said."We're going to be looking at everything," Nisleit said. "To the communities that we serve, every member of this department fully understands and strives to meet the expectations of this profession. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego veteran and father is defending his son's right to sit during the national anthem.Ray Everett is responding to a letter sent to Lincoln High School's principal, complaining that students on the basketball team were sitting and talking during the national anthem.The man who wrote the letter is a U.S. Air Force veteran and grandfather to a player on the opposing team. Another parent who was offended used her phone to film the students sitting."At the end of the day our students do not have to stand," said Everett. "But you will not make them feel like they did something wrong. They did not harm anyone and they did not break the law."Everett was in the U.S. Army for 15 years. He says he served his country in order to protect the rights of Americans, including the right to sit during the national anthem.Everett's brother-in-law, Antoine Jarvis, says while he was offended by the letter he respects everyone's right to their own opinion. "I think that the biggest challenge in voicing your opinion is when you're close-minded to other's opinions," said Jarvis. "When you're close-minded to their beliefs."Jarvis says he no longer stands during the national anthem after learning more about its history. He only asks that others respect his right to do so.The principal of Lincoln High School, a veteran himself, has been responsive to complaints and plans to sit down with the veteran who wrote the letter about the student's actions.On Thursday the San Diego Unified School District released a statement:Public school districts do not have the authority to require students to observe patriotic or religious rituals in the classroom or at school functions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A suspect fleeing from officers and an innocent Camp Pendleton Marine were killed in an early-morning head-on crash following a chase on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad. The pursuit began just after midnight Tuesday when officers attempted to stop a motorist driving a dark-colored F-150 truck for a speeding and failing to signal a turn on Coast Highway turning onto Monterey Dr. When officers got to the door of the truck, the suspect took off on Carmelo Drive near Harbor Drive in Oceanside. The suspect's wife tells 10News Christian Zurita is the man who led police on the chase. Zurita was reported traveling at speeds of up to 100 mph, and sometimes driving the wrong way on the freeway, police said.About 10 minutes into the chase, the truck entered the northbound lanes in the wrong direction near the Las Flores bridge trying to evade police. NEWS HEADLINES: Preliminary hearing begins for LJCD teacher accused of sex with 17-year-old Oceanside Police Department officers did not pursue the truck because it was going the wrong way on the highway, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, according to investigators. Moments later, he slammed his truck head-on into a light-colored Pontiac Grand Prix that was traveling in the northbound lanes.Officers approached the truck, breaking out the windows, and deploying a K9. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Active-duty troops are deployed at or around the San Ysidro Port of Entry in southern San Diego County, the Department of Defense said Friday, marking the start of a military response to the U.S.-Mexico border amid immigration concerns.More than 7,000 American service members have been deployed due to word of a migrant caravan moving up from South America, according to the Associated Press. The troops may eventually number 15,000, President Trump said Wednesday.As of Friday, one week after the Pentagon acknowledged that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had approved a Department of Homeland Security request for military support at the border, the troop deployment was still unfolding, with about 3,500 at staging bases in the Southwest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A suspicious backpack prompted a bomb squad response downtown Tuesday afternoon. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. just outside the federal building on the 800 block of Front Street. Authorities say a security guard at the building saw a man acting suspiciously before tossing a military backpack into a planter. After using special equipment to examine the bag, the bomb squad found only personal items inside the bag. The FBI said it sent agents to the scene, but that the "matter is being led by Federal Protective Services." 596
