SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ahead of the Halloween weekend, San Diego State University is issuing a stay-at-home advisory for all students.The college said following the CDC's discouragement from participating in Halloween or social events where physical distancing cannot be done, as well as San Diego County's recommendation to avoid similar gatherings, a temporary advisory for students will go into effect from Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 a.m.Under the advisory, students are encouraged to stay home unless for an essential need.The university says it will continue to enforce the campus' COVID-19 policies against large gatherings off-campus, including recent reports of social events in the College Area that have drawn dozens of students together without physical distancing or mask wearing. Since Aug. 24, nearly 900 notices of alleged violations of the campus' COVID-19 policy have been issued."It takes only one person, even one who is asymptomatic, to create a public health risk. As members of this community, and with the care of others in mind, we again ask you to avoid gatherings of any type that do not comply with public health guidelines," the school said in a release.Those who are found violating SDSU's COVID-19 policies could face sanctions, suspension, or expulsion.SDSU is encouraging students to take part in virtual Halloween events, including:Saturday, Oct. 24, Aztec Nights: Fall Festival virtual event will include games, trivia, and an interactive demonstration by pumpkin carver Tom Nardone from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.Thursday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 31, the SDSU Alcohol and Other Drugs Task Force will be facilitating “Zoom into Halloween.” Members of SDSU’s student clubs and organizations who commit to hosting an event on one of those days between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight will receive four gift cards, which they can then use as a drawing during their hosted events. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Across the state of California, there were more than 10,000 sexual harassment offenses, as defined by California education code that resulted in suspension, expulsion or disciplinary diversion.A San Diego mother says her daughter was bullied and sexually harassed at school.“She said that he would take her pencils from her,” said Myiesha Jackson. “If she tried to get them back he would stick them down his pants."Jackson claims the male student didn’t stop there. She claims he took Play-Doh, made it into the shape of a penis and rubbed it on her daughter while making inappropriate sounds."I consider that sexual harassment,” said Jackson. An investigation report Jackson gave to Team 10 says the accused student admitted to rolling up the Play-Doh and holding it up while singing an inappropriate song that was sexual in nature, and the Play-Doh represented a male genitalia part, but the other student denied touching her with it.At the end of the report, it lists an action play, basically separating both students at all points of the day so they wouldn’t come into contact with each other.Jackson says that’s not what happened."The very day I brought her back she was in lunch, the line to get lunch, and they let him out of the office apparently, and he went and stood directly behind her,” she said.Magnolia Science Academy- San Diego denied 10News’ request for an interview.In an emailed statement an attorney for Magnolia Public Schools wrote:“State and federal student confidentiality laws and our organization's policy prohibit MSA-SD from commenting on specific students or incidents in which they may be involved. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A tiger at an East County animal sanctuary has been killed by another tiger after staff accidentally allowed them to come in contact. ABC10 News confirmed that the surviving tiger is the same one that was rescued from a highly publicized smuggling bust at the border.Bobbi Brink is the founder of Alpine nonprofit Lions Tigers & Bears. She spoke to ABC10 News on Tuesday about Monday's incident where 7-year-old Maverick was attacked by another tiger named Moka in a tragedy of human error. No staff members or visitors were hurt. "It's a terrible accident and it occurred during the daily share that the tigers do every day when they put the tigers separately. Well, they accidentally put them in contact," she told ABC10 News.Moka sustained only a few scratches. He's the same tiger that was first reported on in 2017 when he was rescued from a smuggler at the U.S.-Mexico border. "They found him on the floorboard of somebody's car and he went to the zoo and the zoo couldn't keep him so he came to Lions Tigers & Bears," added Brink.Maverick was rescued in 2014 by California Fish and Wildlife staff after he was born in captivity and purchased illegally by a buyer who wasn't licensed to own an exotic animal.The nonprofit stated that it regularly holds safety trainings including one just last weekend. It plans to extensively review its protocols this week. "The process of caring for these animals doesn't leave any space for error," added Brink.On Tuesday evening, a spokesperson for the nonprofit called to say that the facility remains open. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534
