Surveys suggest a growing number of Americans are willing to get a COVID-19 vaccine, however the latest numbers from Gallup in mid-November show only 58 percent of those surveyed would get the vaccine.A former lawmaker is among those suggesting giving people a stimulus check in exchange for getting a COVID-19 vaccine.During an interview with CNBC, former Maryland Representative John Delaney suggested giving ,500 for getting immunized.“The faster we get 75 percent of this country vaccinated, the faster we end Covid and the sooner everything returns to normal,” Delaney said in an interview with CNBC.com.Survey data shows a growing political divide about whether or not to take the vaccine, and Delaney told CNBC.com there has to be an incentive for “people to really accelerate their thinking about taking the vaccine.”Delaney pointed out that while his plan would not force anyone to get vaccinated, there are already measures in the U.S. to encourage vaccination, including for children to attend school. While his proposal seems enticing, it faces some big hurdles.Sending people ,500 checks in exchange for vaccination could cost upward of 0 billion. By comparison, the round of stimulus checks sent to Americans earlier this year totaled more than 0 billion so far.Coronavirus relief spending is a hot topic in Congress, as Democrats and Republicans try to compromise and make an agreement before the end of the year. Democrats are backing a 0 billion starting point, while Republicans in the Senate say they want closer to 0 billion.Delaney said the checks don’t have to be ,500. He said the point is to create an incentive to increase how many people get vaccinated, because, in his opinion, once more people get vaccinated, “everything returns to normal, which means we don’t need any more programs (that Congress would create).”Delaney’s proposal comes following another similar idea from Robert Litan, a fellow at the Brookings Institute and was formerly in the Clinton administration. He has a proposal that would pay Americans ,000 to get vaccinated, a portion upfront, and another portion once a 70 percent vaccination threshold is reached. Health experts believe a 70 percent threshold is needed to help with herd immunity, and help protect those who are unable to be vaccinated."Unlike previous payments, this is stimulus tied to socially responsible behavior. So society is getting a benefit from handing out the money," Litan told Business Insider.A former top economic advisor to George W. Bush, N. Gregory Mankiw, has come out publicly in support of the idea, according to Business Insider.Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang tweeted his support of the idea. 2716

Students at a school in N.W. Baltimore got quite the treat, and the internet can't get enough of it.Last week during a Black Heritage Program at Gwynns Falls Elementary principal Nikomar Mosley performed a vibrant step routine for his student body. Mosley is a member of historical black fraternity Omega Psi Phi, which traditionally performs step routines as part of the black Greek culture. 420

TAMPA, Fla. — Seconds after 17-year-old Lexi Banks was born, she was rushed into surgery. The 4-pound newborn was turning gray, struggling to breathe with doctors pulling her out of her mother’s embrace to perform an emergency tracheotomy.“Your daughter needs this or she will die,” Lexi’s mom, Kim Cashman, remembers doctors telling her.  That would be the first of many surgeries Lexi would have to endure throughout her childhood and teenage years. The surgeries haven’t stopped. But, Lexi’s Dr. Ernesto Ruas is hopeful the recent surgeries he’s performed on Lexi will be the last.“I’m hoping in a couple of years she will be done,” Ruas said. Ruas is harvesting a bone from her fibula (calf bone) and taking her peroneal artery to make sure her new jaw has enough blood flow and circulation to survive.   “The whole procedure depends on two little vessels that measure 1.5 mm to 2 mm. If those vessels get plugged up we are in trouble. She is not in trouble. The procedure is in trouble,” Ruas said.  When Lexi was 6-years-old, Ruas tried a similar procedure. Ruas said her body rejected her bone and over time it disintegrated. Now that she is an adult, Ruas hopes this surgery will be the big break Lexi and her family have been waiting for.Lexi wasn't able to eat solid food until she was 16-years-old. She had a tube inserted in her stomach for her entire life and until recently she lived with a trach tube. In the past two years, she has come a long way. Able to eat solid food and breath without the help of a trach. Not only will the surgery give Lexi the jaw she was never born with. But, it will help her breath better on her own and be able to finally eat food like everyone else.Lexi was born with a rare condition called Goldenhar?disease. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "it is a condition that is present at birth and mainly affects the development of the eye, ear, and spine."“Everything just stopped developing for a moment, and at that moment that’s when everything stopped, particularly on her one side", Cashman said. “So, the blood vessels just stopped for a moment, her ear stopped developing, her jaw.”Lexi was born without a right ear, and her jaw was deformed, almost detached from her face.“I want to just be happy about myself and people accept me,” Lexi said.  Scripps station WFTS in Tampa talked to her before her first surgery, her speech impaired because her mouth was partially wired shut to keep her jaw in place for the upcoming surgery.“People normally are nice but there’s always people out there mean, and people stare at me and say bad names to me,” Lexi said.  Lexi has bone conducting hearing aids implanted in her cochlear, multiple surgeries on her face, surgeries on her gastrointestinal tube so she could eat, and numerous surgeries over the course of her life that have culminated in two major surgeries that will change her life.“Because she is missing half her jaw she can't bite correctly, she can’t chew correctly, she can’t maintain her airway,” Dr. Ernesto Ruas said.  Ruas, a plastic surgeon in Tampa, performed his first surgery on Lexi when she was just 5-months-old.“She is a tough little cookie. As I said, she rolls with the punches she does very well,” Ruas said.  In January, Ruas rebuilt Lexi’s upper jaw using a cadaver harvested from her leg. On April 16, Ruas performed a second surgery on Lexi to rebuild the entire bottom part of her jaw.  Lexi, hands trembling, talked about her dreams of having a face that looked similar to everyone else.“I want them to know I am a strong girl and I want to share people my story so they understand what I go through,” Lexi said. “I don’t have to hide away and not share my story but be out there in the world.”After more than 14 hours of surgery, Lexi was in the ICU for several days and released over the weekend. She has to walk with crutches for a month and undergo extensive physical therapy.  Her surgery was one of the toughest the family has ever gone through. But, Lexi, as always made it through."She is one tough girl," Cashman said.  The surgeries are taking their toll on the family emotionally and monetarily.   Lexi saw her mom crying in the kitchen one morning over bills and made this GoFundMe.  4398

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — New unredacted court documents reveal Aaron Glee Jr., who is accused in the murder of Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau and Vicki Sims, confessed to killing the young activist and community volunteer. The documents also detail how Sims and Glee knew each other and how all three of them briefly met on June 6.Probable cause documents state that when officers responded to Glee's home in the 2100 block of Monday Road on June 13, they found Vicki Sims' car stuck in the mud outside of the home. They say a sheet was placed over the back of the Toyota and the license plate was bent up, hiding the license plate number. When they went inside, they found 75-year-old Vicki Sims' body. Investigators say her arms and feet were tied up behind her.As they continued searching Glee's home, they found 19-year-old Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau's body. Documents say her body appeared to be "purposely" covered with leaves and other vegetation.According to documents, when officers spoke to Sims' family prior to the discovery of her body, they said that Sims "often prepared meals for 'Aaron'" and delivered them to his home."It was reported that 'Aaron,' who did not own his own vehicle, often obtained transportation from Sims," probable cause documents read.As police continued investigating, they learned that, about two hours before the bodies were discovered, Glee had bought a bus ticket to West Palm Beach. On June 14, Glee was detained by the Orlando Police Department at a Greyhound station. After complaining about having trouble breathing, Glee was taken to the hospital. That's where documents say he voluntarily confessed to the murders; once to officers who were guarding him and again to his mother in a phone call. When TPD officers interviewed him, Glee confessed to kidnapping and murdering Salau and Sims on different dates.Glee said that on June 6, he was at a bus stop on Apalachee Parkway when he met Salau. He said they talked for about an hour.During that time, he said Salau told him that she had been recently sexually assaulted and didn't have a permanent place to stay. After that, Glee agreed to go with Salau to his home so she could bathe and rest."Glee stated that he then placed a telephone call to Sims, and that she came and picked he and Salau up in her Toyota," documents read. According to investigators, Glee's story was corroborated by surveillance video. After Sims dropped them off, Glee said she left and Salau went inside the home to take a shower. After Salau got out of the shower, Glee said he "attempted to engage her in sexual activity."He told officers that Salau physically resisted him, biting him on the arm."Glee said he physically overpowered Salau... He was asked if he would characterize his actions as rape," investigators wrote in the documents. "Glee responded in the affirmative."Glee said that he then kept Salau inside the home for approximately three to five days. He told officers that he was heavily under the influence of alcohol during that time, so he was unsure exactly how much time had passed."Glee stated that he was aware he would be arrested and likely sentenced to prison if he allowed Salau to leave the residence," documents read. "Glee indicated he determined that his only course of action was to end her life."So, Glee said he tied her up in a way that made it difficult for her to breathe.Based on the evidence and Glee's confession, officers found probable cause to charge him with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of murder (second degree murder and premeditated murder), and one count of sexual assault.During a court appearance on Saturday, a judge ruled that Glee will be held in jail without bond. This story was originally published by staff at WTXL. 3747
