UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added. The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.

SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period. The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said. The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.

CHICAGO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The macroeconomic control policies adopted by the Chinese government since mid-2008 have been proven successful, two economists said Saturday.Since late 2008, the Chinese government has taken a series of macroeconomic control policies to deal with the global financial crisis. The government carried on massive financial investment, some of which focused on real estate."In spite of some problems, the Chinese government has been making great progress in regulating and controlling the Chinese economy during the global financial crisis," Min Tang, a Chinese economist, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua."Everything has two sides, good and bad. This macroeconomic control policy is an action taken to fight against a crisis," he said.Tang believed that whether or not the policies are successful should be judged from the macro perspective instead of a micro perspective."China was able to resume its rapid growth first when the global economy was still going downhill," Tang said, "China also successfully kept the confidence of its people and enterprises, which is more important than anything else. Therefore, the government's macro control is very successful."

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices will fall further with increasing supplies as temperatures continue to climb, the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planner, said Wednesday.Average retail prices for 15 kinds of vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants, dropped by 10.15 percent in May from April, the NDRC said.Prices for some vegetables fell drastically when the peak supply season came by the end of May, it said.NDRC monitoring showed prices of cucumbers on May 26 averaged 4.04 yuan (59 U.S. cents) per kg, 22 percent down from a month earlier while green rape dropped 20.1 percent in price month on month to 7.82 yuan per kg.In China, food prices account for a third of the weighting in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation.China's CPI picked up in April, rising 2.8 percent year on year because of lower comparison base last year and rising food prices because of adverse weather. The government set a target to keep the full-year growth in the CPI at about 3 percent this year.

BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao encouraged college students to help advance the country's modernization drive on the eve of Youth Day, calling on them to "nourish lofty ambitions."Replying a letter from students and teachers of the China Agricultural University, Hu said he hoped they could nourish lofty ambitions and contribute to the country's endeavor to solve the issues concerning agriculture, farmers and rural areas. He said the issues are on the top agenda of the central authorities, and the modernization of agriculture is a major task in the country's overall plan to realize modernization. The task means huge responsibility for colleges and institutes specialized in agricultural studies, while at the same time it also offers a platform for agriculture learners and researchers to display their talents, Hu said. The Beijing-based university is a top higher learning institution specialized in agriculture in China. Hu visited the university and talked with students and teachers there a year earlier before Youth Day, which falls on May 4.
