No waiting in Hall H's line. No attending an earlier panel to save a seat for a later event. Every panel was streamed on Comic-Con's website and most were made available on YouTube afterward for fans to catch. Exclusive content aired during panels also made their way onto the internet arguably faster than previous years. While the glitz of seeing stars, artists, and writers in person was missing, the heart of enjoying a panel for its presentation was still there.What didn't: ExclusivesAdmittedly, Comic-Con isn't just about exclusive merchandise. But many attendees enjoy being able to score gear that you'll only get at SDCC — for resale or to keep. However, when it came to exclusives, internet connection and website servers were at the will of how many people logged onto their site. So when something was highly sought after, websites saw a lot of traffic — sometimes too much. In the case of several popular merchandisers — like Funko, Mondo, or Hasbro — exclusives often sold out quickly, sometimes before the convention even occurred. What worked: "Off-site" experiencesOff-site experiences outside the convention center have become as much of Comic-Con as the exhibit hall inside the center. With the convention online, some exhibitors took the opportunity to host some unique games and activities on their own websites. FX Unlocked showcased its lineup of FX shows with games, trivia, and digital extras, while Amazon held its own virtual con to showcase its products and Amazon Prime shows. FutureTechLive! also put together a virtual World Builders activation for users to unleash their imagination.What didn't: CosplayOne of the best parts of Comic-Con is seeing everyone dressed up as their favorite characters waltzing around downtown San Diego. Where else can you run into Kirk and Spock or Batman enjoying a bite to eat in broad daylight? While the convention did its best to showcase cosplayers online with a "masquerade ball" via Tumblr, it just isn't quite the same as being at the event in-person. What worked: Connecting with fansHosting Comic-Con online ensured fans can connect with their favorite comic book writers, artists, and even entertainers. Without having to manage a tight schedule of going location to location for panels and events, users could simply log on and watch a panel, win some free swag in some cases, or reach out to comic book writers and artists for commissions or to purchase their work. No walking through a packed Artist Alley or standing in line for a free t-shirt — though some may argue that's part of the appeal.What didn't: Recreating being thereSDCC made several activities available online ahead of the convention, like signs and badges to print out to dress your home for the event. A virtual exhibit floor was also offered online and while fun, was a bit tricky to navigate on your phone. Though it was great to offer those activities for fans, nothing can really recreate that feeling of walking through the halls of the convention center or visiting your favorite comic book artists. 3915

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades.The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31.  943

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Low inventory and historically low interest rates are driving California's red-hot real estate market.According to the California Association of Realtors, home sales climbed to their highest level in more than a decade, and the median home price set another high for the fourth straight month.It's making it harder for buyers to buy low but easier for sellers looking to sell high."With everything shutting down, I just figured now was the time to do it," said Kristi Gonzalez.After a career in the San Diego area, Gonzalez is retiring, moving out of state, and about to cash out."I think now is a great time to sell," she said. "There's very low inventory. It will make it easier for me."If you've paid attention to California's real estate landscape, the market is hot in many cities."We're seeing about a 10 percent increase in the last four to five months, and that's insane considering where we were," said Jordan Beal, president of the Beal Group.Beal said the San Diego area sees an influx of buyers from New York, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles."When you look at the fact that money is as cheap as it is, people who have been able to keep their jobs combined with a lot of tech people who can now work remotely and see San Diego as really cheap market compared to the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York, I don't see our market slowing down anytime soon," Beal said.The same thing is happening as you head north into the Central Valley."Inventory is historically low, interest rates are historically low, and it's just kind of the perfect storm with that whole supply and demand," said Ronda Newport, president of the Bakersfield Association of Realtors.Newport said the Bakersfield market is on fire.It's a combination of locals looking to take advantage of interest rates and those from wealthier ZIP codes trying to get out of a big city."If you have an LA buyer or a Bay Area buyer, and if they sell their home, you know a small little home for what they sell for in that area, and they move to Bakersfield, and they see what they can get for the money here, it's an easy decision," she said."We are just breaking all sorts of records," said Bruce Blair of Blair Properties.Blair's been selling homes along the Central Coast since the 70s.He said some people are buying houses they've never seen. Some buyers are paying in cash, and those who aren't have large down payments."It's tough to make any type of prediction right now, but right now, the housing market is not affordable for a lot of people in San Luis Obispo County, and that's a problem."According to the California Association of Realtors, September's statewide median home price was 2,430. That's up more than 17 percent from September of last year.According to a survey from Zillow, life uncertainty, likely caused by COVID-19, keeps more than a third of would-be sellers out of the market.The Zillow survey found many sellers say they anticipate a higher sale price if they wait.So, what to do? Unfortunately, there's no crystal ball."I don't anticipate it slowing down too much," said Carla Farley, President of the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors. "Unless we get some interest rates that go crazy after the election cycle, maybe that might slow some things, but I don't anticipate that happening either."According to the California Association of Realtors, the median number of days it took to sell a California single-family home was 11 days in September, down from 24 in September 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Valley is in store to get an additional nearly 30,000 homes by 2050, according to a new plan the City Council unanimously passed Tuesday.The council voted 9-0 to pass the Mission Valley Community Plan, which would increase the number of allowed housing units in Mission Valley to 39,200. Currently, the area has about 11,200 units. The idea is to change Mission Valley's underutilized strip malls into mixed-use developments, where housing and commercial are under the same roof. "That dream, that American dream, that middle class security that is created by home ownership is now vanishing for a large segment of the population, and we can do better," said Jonathan Frankel, who heads the Mission Valley Community Planning Group. But Mission Valley is currently one of the cities most congested areas. Currently, the city says 600 people live and work in Mission Valley, but 40,000 commute in daily. As part of the plan, the city would add bridges and roads, plus an additional trolley stop and bike and walking paths. It would allow the people who do live and work in Mission Valley to get where they need to go, without a car. "The Mission Valley Community Plan Update is a no-brainer that will increase desperately needed housing stock, improve amenities for residents and will help the city meet its climate action goals,” Councilman Scott Sherman said in a statement. “I appreciate my council colleagues for approving this important community plan update.”The city aims to turn Mission Valley into a transit environment to help with the region's housing crisis and its climate action goals, a staff report says. 1654
