In the face of the pandemic, some major chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Gold’s Gym have already filed for bankruptcy. But others are hoping technology and personalized training could help them save brick and mortar gyms.“Last year, I had one knee replaced. I'm scheduled to have the other one this fall,” said 69-year-old Larry Fulhorst. He hadn’t been to a gym in 40 years, but he needed to work on building strength in his legs.A Facebook post led him to a hi-tech fitness studio promising results without needing to spend hours sweating away in a crowded gym.“This sounds too good to be true 20 minutes twice a week," said Fulhorst. The Exercise Coach is a smart fitness studio that trades dumbbells and treadmills for artificial intelligence and robotics. Technology diagnoses strengths and weaknesses in real time.“We use sensors to actually get a feel for the exact muscular makeup and abilities of an individual and then we use that that personal data to generate appropriate strength training,” explained Bryan Cygan, the CEO and founder of The Exercise Coach.The programs are geared primarily toward people who haven’t worked out in years or are starting to exercise for the first time.“Generally, people in their 40, 50s, 60s and even beyond who want real results from a workout but don't want to spend a lot of time exercising,” said Cygan.With many big box gyms filing for bankruptcy as gym goers are weary about coronavirus, smart fitness studios are pivoting in.Compressed workouts, personal trainers and no crowds are key.“It works because our workout isn't an hour long of sweaty cardio. You can actually wear a mask, breathe comfortably and get all the benefits of exercise through strength training,” said Cygan.It’s something that appeals to people who are in a particularly vulnerable age group when it comes to COVID-19 like Larry Fulhorst.“You look at a facility this big it's no problem staying six feet away from somebody everybody's wearing a mask,” said Fulhorst.It seems to be working for Exercise Coach. LEMON GROVE (CNS) - A man was jailed for stealing a deputy's patrol car at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station, sheriff's officials said Sunday. Matthew Brian Porter, 44, was arrested Saturday evening and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of evading deputies, theft of an emergency vehicle and fleeing police on a highway in the wrong direction, all felonies, according to jail records. At about 9 p.m., a deputy at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station was unloading his patrol car at the end of his shift, according to Lt. Mike Rand of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A man then got into the deputy's patrol car and drove away. Deputies spotted the vehicle leaving the station and began a pursuit. But they lost sight of it as it drove eastbound on Broadway. A resident called 911 to report the abandoned patrol car in the 3500 block of Grove Street. Deputies located the vehicle and detained Porter, who allegedly admitted to stealing the patrol car. Porter's bail on the evading charge was set at ,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. 1080

LINCOLN PARK (KGTV) - Women received free mammograms in Lincoln Park on Sunday.Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer. The free screenings were available because of Susan G. Komen San Diego. The non-profit parked a mobile screening center in front of City of Hope International Church on Holly Drive. More than two dozen women received mammograms. "It's very important for women to get mammograms because early detection is the best protection, and when breast cancer is caught in its early stage, it's basically 99% treatable," said Wendy Shurelds with Susan G. Komen San Diego.Sunday's screening is one of many. The next screening will be Friday, October 26th at Northgate Market on University Avenue. 767

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - One of the most elite schools in San Diego has finished investigating accusations of decades of sexual abuse. Investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner broke the story last July when several former students at The Bishop's School came forward about former school employees. The numbers have since doubled. The current tuition at the prestigious private high school is more than ,000 per year. It's been ten months since we reported on how the school was dealing with claims of abuse that spanned three decades. In a transparent move last year, the The Bishop’s School revealed that seven members of its alumni had come forward and described fifteen separate instances of misconduct. Five of those were first-hand accounts of sexual misconduct or boundary violations committed by a school employee.READ: The Bishop's School dealing with multiple claims of sexual misconduct spanning several decadesSince then, The Bishop’s School has been working to complete its investigation. It is now over and the numbers are up. The school report’s, “To date, 14 alumni have come forward to report incidents of sexual misconduct.” The school also reports, "Ten different perpetrators were identified as having engaged in sexual misconduct that would potentially constitute a crime at the time of occurrence." None of the accused are apparently still with the school and at least two are reportedly dead. The school reports that most of the cases were from the 1970s and 1980s. There were no reported cases within the last 20 years.The school declined an interview with 10News, but in a new letter to alumni, it reaffirms its commitment to student safety and apologies to everyone who was affected.The school has turned over ten cases to the San Diego Police Department and says it will notify the community if charges are filed against any of its former school employees. 1894

(KGTV) -- A new report from La Mesa Police show that crime in the city has decreased dramatically over the last year.According to East County Magazine, most individual crime categories are at a minimum of five-year lows with overall trends around the levels seen by the city in the 1960’s, marking 50-year lows.Crime from the fourth quarter of 2016 to the fourth quarter of 2017 decreased by more than 27 percent.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhoodViolent crimes have also seen a significant decrease since 2016. According to a report, La Mesa saw a more than 18 percent decrease in 2017 compared to the same time in 2016.Other crimes that dropped off were robberies, with a decrease of more than 10 percent, and property crimes, with a decrease of more than 28 percent.La Mesa Police Captain Matt Nichols said having the budget to be fully staffed has enabled more officers to be in the field.More outreach within the community has also led to more tips and an emphasis on attacking issues before they grow are also helping keep crime low.Another factor in the city’s success is a focus on the 911 dispatch which is run by the department.
