SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Winter weather swept through San Diego Sunday, making a dent in fire danger, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Meteorologist."This is very good timing," NOAA Meteorologist Alex Tardy said, referencing the heavy rain across the county and even some snow that fell in places like Santa Ysabel in east county.Tardy said this year's heat broke records, "we exited a summer... is all time hottest for places like Escondido, Campo, Borrego Springs, Palomar Mountain. That whole corridor, which is most of San Diego except the immediate coast, the hottest period from June through October on record so that's made our fuels drier than they've ever been."The heat leaving San Diego vulnerable to a devastating fire season."We had the Valley fire in September, it could have been a lot worse, so this rain doesn't end our fire season but it puts a huge dent in it," Tardy saidThe winter forecast is fairly dry. Tardy said San Diego will be on the edge of some storms and may get a little relief from that but it won't be enough to keep us out of a drought."Regardless of getting a few storms that could give us heavy rain, a drier than average winter that's predicted starts putting us into the long term drought scenario and you never want to go into that especially considering it took us so long to get out of the one we were in a few years ago," he said. 1405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men are dead and a woman is in critical condition after a car crashed into a Mission Valley bus stop Thursday.A driver collided with the three pedestrians in the 7500 block of Metropolitan Drive around 11 a.m. The driver remained at the scene for San Diego Police.One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The other male victim was later pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Both victims were identified as men in their 40s.A 49-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police say.Police and a friend of the female victim say the three pedestrians were sleeping behind the bus stop with their belongings at the time of the crash. Jessica Nelson said she knew the 49-year-old woman and brought her some clothing and make-up earlier that day. She said she tried to convince her to go eat with friends, but the woman stayed with her husband, according to Nelson.Nelson said the pink bags strewn about the crash sight belonged to the victim, she called Kelly.Nelson said she met Kelly a year and a half ago at the bus stop where the accident took place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Poway family is urging people to be aware of a possible new scam that may be luring people away from their homes. One resident says she was almost tricked by a caller who claimed to be an SDG&E employee. A voicemail was left for the Chavez family, saying crews needed to do some work on equipment in the area. It stated, “It requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”Katharine Chavez says she called the company to confirm. “(They) said let me check your area and came back and said there’s no work planned in your area.”Chavez says she wants to make sure others don’t fall victim to scammers. “It's scary, and you work hard for your stuff,” said Chavez. “To have someone come in and try to take what you work for, or your neighbors, just go out and make your own money.”SDG&E says under FAA regulations they are required to notify residents and evacuate homes for special construction projects, such as transporting a new utility pole by helicopter. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people were injured after a fire broke out on a boat in Mission Bay, engulfing the vessel, Thursday.San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to the fire on the 30-foot vessel off Ingraham St. just after 3 p.m.Two people were burned by flames and jumped from the boat. They were transported to UCSD Medical Center, though the extent of their injuries is unknown.Witnesses said they initially saw smoke but thought the fire would be extinguished. Within five minutes, witnesses say the flames grew higher and panic set in."It started catching on fire, people started jumping off into the water," said Jorge Segura, who captured video showing a SDFD boat dosing the flames early on. 701
