For many, Labor Day simply signifies the end of summer and it offers a great excuse for an extended weekend.However, there’s a deeper meaning behind the national holiday, which has roots as far back as the 1880s.Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement. It’s dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers, the bedrock of the U.S. economy and the country's prosperity.“It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor.The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.As for the founder of Labor Day, there is still some doubt about who first proposed the holiday for workers.Some records show Peter J. Meanwhile, others believe that machinist Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.Regardless, Labor Day celebrations gained popularity and communities across the U.S. began making it a state holiday. First, Oregon passed it into law, followed by states like Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday and in June of that year, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday of each year a national holiday.Since then, Labor Day celebrations have evolved. FRANKLIN, Indiana — Authorities in Indiana are warning people of a scam involving a person who is claiming to be a sheriff's deputy in order to deceive people into sending money.According to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, a woman came to the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday who said while she was at work she received a call from an individual who claimed to be a sheriff's deputy.The individual told the woman she had a warrant for her arrest due to failure to appear for jury duty selection. The suspect told the woman if she wanted to avoid arrest she needed to pay the fines by purchasing ,000 worth of Apple Store gift cards. The suspect also told the woman she would need to go to the sheriff's office with her receipts to prove her identity.After making the initial purchase in pre-paid gift cards, the suspect informed the woman 0 was not transferred, according to the sheriff's office. The suspect reportedly told the woman to purchase another 0 in pre-paid Apple gift cards. The woman said she was on the phone with the suspect for approximately two hours until all the transactions were made and confirmed. She then drove to the sheriff's office where she was informed she was the victim of a scam.The woman was distraught and told deputies she is recently divorced and the money used from her saving account was being saved for her children's Christmas gifts. 1413

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced that archeological investigations found a 7,000-year-old Native American ancestral burial site in the Gulf of Mexico near Venice, Florida.“The Florida Department of State takes our responsibility for the preservation, respectful treatment and security of this rare and unique site very seriously,” said Secretary Detzner. “Our dedicated team of underwater archaeologists has done an incredible job of documenting and researching the Manasota Key Offshore archaeological site, and I am extremely proud of the work. Our hope is that this discovery leads to more knowledge and a greater understanding of Florida’s early peoples. We are thankful for the cooperation of our partners, including Gulf Coast Community Foundation and their CEO, Mark Pritchett, who has provided invaluable support and integration with the local community.”The Manasota Key Offshore (MKO) site is reportedly unprecedented and is located on the continental shelf in offshore waters, preserved in what appears to have been a peat-bottomed freshwater pond thousands of years ago.The state says that out of respect for the individuals buried there and their living descendants, divers are restricted from disturbing the site.Officials say the MKO archaeological site demonstrates that submerged offshore archaeological sites have survived natural occurrences, such as erosion and hurricanes.“Seeing a 7,000-year-old site that is so well preserved in the Gulf of Mexico is awe inspiring," said Dr. Ryan Duggins, Underwater Archaeology Supervisor for BAR. "We are truly humbled by this experience.  It is important to remember that this is a burial site and must be treated with the utmost respect. We now know that this type of site exists on the continental shelf.  This will forever change the way we approach offshore archaeology. FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Lee County deputy is starting an incredible journey.  He will run nearly 400 miles from Lee County to Tallahassee in honor of fallen officers.Sgt. Sammy Gonzalez said this will be a grueling and difficult run, but it’s not impossible.  He has been with the sheriff’s office for 10 years now and said he's doing this run to help families of fallen officers."I've been running nonstop, it's almost a year for preparation for this," he said.Thursday morning, Gonzalez begins his 390-mile journey from Fort Myers to Tallahassee in the next 8-9 days.“It’s going to be an emotional finish. I can't even explain what it's going to be like when I arrive at the state capitol."Back in 2005, Sgt Gonzalez had a good friend killed in the line of duty.  "I tell people I can't bring back these fallen officers back, but what I'm doing is I'm raising money and awareness for those families who are left behind," he said. So far, he's raised ,000 for the charity Concerns of Police Survivors, and he hopes to raise ,000 more by the time he gets to the state capitol."Last year, 135 officers died in the United States," he said. "That's 135 too many."The first day, Gonzalez will run about 40 miles. He said they've planned it out every step of the way.  "I'm staying in an RV, actually," he said. "I have a 3-person team from the sheriff’s office that will be with me the entire trip."My only concern is the heat," he said. I've ran in hot conditions in the past, and it can play tricks on the mind."He will get to Tallahassee just in time for the state's annual memorial that honors and celebrates lives lost in the line of duty.Sgt.
