WASHINGTON, D.C. – Video games are not just for the young anymore – they’re for the young at heart. People over the age of 50 are one of the fastest growing group of video game players in the country and that is translating into big bucks. It’s a trend that can be seen at the Hayes Senior Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. That is where afternoons are a time to get up and strike in video game bowling. “It’s fun,” said 62-year-old Karen Glymph. “It brings you up, makes you laugh.” Glymph plays to win, even though video games are not what this generation grew up with. “We didn’t have this then,” she said. “Most everybody wanted to go outside. Now, they want to stay and play video games.” That is especially true for seniors, according to a new study by the AARP. “Gaming and technology – that's where we see a bigger shift,” said Alison Bryant, AARP senior vice president of research. How big is the shift? In 2016, about 40 million people over the age of 50 played video games monthly. By 2019, that number soared to more than 50 million. That means 44% of all seniors are now regularly playing video games. All of this is turning into big business, because the amount of money seniors spent on video games last year alone totaled billion. “I hope that the gaming industry is going to start taking a look at these numbers and saying, ‘wait a minute. There's really an opportunity here to increase our market share’ and to develop games that might be even more exciting for older adults,” Bryant said. Back at the senior center, Karen Glymph said she could never have imagined doing this in her younger years. “I really had no idea that I was going to play a video game and move my whole body,” she said. “So, it's like ‘whoa!’”It is an excitement for video games that’s contagious for an older generation, too. 1836

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake was reported near Ridgecrest, California, on Friday morning -- one week after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck Southern California, the US Geological Survey said. The region was originally hit on July 4 with a 6.4 earthquake, followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake the following day.The latest moderate earthquake briefly rattled CNN's Los Angeles bureau.Last week's major earthquake was centered 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest, the USGS said. It unleashed 11 times the amount of energy of the previous day's quake, also centered near Ridgecrest, said CNN Meteorologist Brandon Miller.Though area residents are used to earthquakes, the tremor last Friday night swayed buildings and cracked streets and foundations, sending terrified locals into the streets. The shaking was felt as far away as Mexico and Las Vegas, according to the USGS.Ridgecrest, a desert town, is home to 28,000 people. The region at one point saw an average of one aftershock per minute since Friday's quake, according to the US Geological Survey website.More than 4,700 quakes have occurred since July 4, said USGS geophysicist John Bellini.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. A cadet at the US Military Academy West Point received fatal injuries in a ski accident last month. Days later, a state Supreme Court judge granted his parents' petition to save their son's sperm in order to continue his legacy and their family lineage.Another skier found 21-year-old Peter Zhu unresponsive on a ski slope on the academy grounds in upstate New York on February 23, according to a school news release. He was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where doctors determined that Zhu's spinal cord was fractured, and he was declared medically brain-dead three days later, court documents say.Zhu's parents, Yongmin and Monica Zhu of Concord, California, filed a petition Friday morning, pleading with the court to allow the hospital to proceed with a sperm retrieval procedure on their son's body.He always wanted to live on a ranch and raise a family and have horses, his parents say in in their petition.More than his wishes to become a father, Peter is the only male child to continue the Zhu family lineage. His parents attribute this mostly to China's "one-child" policy, which forced his uncles to each have only one daughter, the petition says."This is our one and only chance of fulfilling Peter's wishes and preserving his incredible legacy," the petition says.Westchester Medical Center doctors were hesitant but willing to perform the procedure if the family could get a court to authorize it, according to the petition. The medical workers were "extremely kind and understanding," it says.Court proceedings were under a time constraint because Zhu, who was an organ donor, was being kept on life support for an organ donor removal procedure scheduled for Friday. New York Supreme Court Judge John Colangelo granted the request two hours after it was filed Friday morning.Colangelo's motion said the reproductive material should be stored at a sperm bank or other facility of the family's choosing until the court could conclusively decide on the matter. The family's lawyer declined to confirm whether the procedure went ahead as requested or whether Zhu remains on life support. The Zhus did not respond to a request for comment."Peter was the love of our lives. He has brought us more joy, pride and happiness than words can say," his parents say in the petition.Zhu, who was to graduate this year, was president of the Cadet Medical Society. He was expected to receive a commission as a medical corps officer and to attend medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Science in Maryland."Peter was one of the top cadets in the Class of 2019, very well-known and a friend to all. He embodied the ideals of the Corps of Cadets and its motto of Duty, Honor, Country and all who knew Peter will miss him," Brig. Gen. Steve Gilland, commandant of cadets at West Point, said in the news release. The academy is investigating the details surrounding the skiing incident, according to the release. 2949

A growing number of tech companies are making plans for their employees to keep working from home even after the pandemic. It's a move that could have an impact across the country for current employees and job seekers, beyond the typical tech hubs.“The tech sector is over-concentrated in a very short list of places – Seattle, the (San Francisco) Bay area, Boston – in a way that really is harmful to the tech industry but also harmful for the rest of the country,” said Mark Muro with the Metropolitan Policy Program – Brookings Institution. Muro has found that most regional economies in the United States are losing ground in tech and not seeing the kind of growth they've been promised. This comes while big tech hubs are dealing with more traffic and the increased cost of living.Muro says what's happening with tech jobs now amid the pandemic is a win for both the tech hubs and America’s heartland.“A lot of people complain that if they had their druthers, if they could get the same job, they'd move to their hometown or move to name it attractive heartland city,” said Muro. Facebook has said it will let many employees work from home permanently. It also plans to open up remote hiring for some roles and set up new hubs to support remote workers in Atlanta, Dallas and Denver.Twitter also says many of its employees will be allowed to work from home permanently. And Walmart has the same plan for its thousands of tech workers. 1450
