According to a new survey released by the United States Department of Education, 94 percent of teachers said they spent their own money on classroom supplies during the 2014-2015 school year, and the average amount spent was 9.Early childhood education teacher Natalie Soto-Mehle says one of the things she loves most about the three and four-year-olds who make up her class at Trevista Elementary School in Denver is their “energy and joy for life.”So she chooses to do all she can to make their day as engaging as possible.“We might want some sparkly pencils to make it a little bit more interesting,” she said, adding that she’d be buying these types of things with her own money.She acknowledges that a lot of what she buys wouldn’t be considered “essential” by many people, but they’re ways that she can make the experience better for her students.“We have a great library, and I do use it, but I want the books for future use so I’ll buy the books that I want,” she said.Soto-Mehle says she probably buys over ,000 worth of extra supplies for her students each year. She can even remember a few years that hit the ,000 mark.But she just chalks it up to being a teacher.“It’s part of what you do,” she said.Does it surprise Soto-Mehle that 94 percent of teachers pay for supplies out of their pocket? Not at all, adding that she “knows a lot of teachers” who do the same.Some of the expenses she incurs are for art supplies like markers, crayons, and paints; storage contains like bins and baskets; picture books that she wants to keep for her students from one year to the next; even houseplants for the room.In her classroom, she’s fortunate in that many of the students’ families contribute things like art supplies and tissues to the school’s pot at the beginning of the year.But when you’re supply “runs out mid-year” as Soto-Mehle says can happen, she doesn’t want to go back to the families.“You don’t want to ask families to pitch in,” she said, adding that “it’s important to me, so I’m not complaining about it.” 2052

A woman in Texas was sentenced Wednesday to a five-year prison term for voting illegally in the 2016 presidential election while on supervised release for a tax fraud conviction.When she voted in the 2016 election, Crystal Mason had already served almost three years in prison for her fraud conviction but had not yet completed her sentence and was still serving a three-year supervised release period, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.Convicted felons lose their voting rights in Texas until they complete their full sentences, including parole and probation.Mason reportedly told the court, however, that she was not aware of that prohibition and had not been informed that she was ineligible to vote until her sentence was complete."She voted in good faith," Mason's defense attorney J. Warren St. John said in an interview. "I don't think she should be going to prison for that." Her attorney has already filed an appeal. "I think Texas law is extreme in terms of sentencing people to prison for voting violations," he said.Mason signed an affidavit in order to cast a provisional ballot, which stated that it is a violation of the law to vote if you are a convicted felon, but Mason did not see that part of the ballot, St. John said."Ms. Mason was never asked if she was a convicted felon by the election judge nor did she indicate that she was a convicted felon," her attorney said. "Ms. Mason voted in good faith that she could legally vote because she was never notified by any government agency that it was against the law to vote."Prosecutors argued that Mason either intended to vote illegally or should have been aware that she was not eligible to vote, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Amazon is pulling Washington Redskins merchandise from their online marketplace.The announcement comes after the team indicated it was reviewing a possible name change, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was supportive of the review.According to a notice distributed to sellers on Amazon, and first published by CNBC, the company said they are removing all products with the Redskins logo and name, and gave sellers just a few days to remove items.Washington State Attorney General sent a letter to Amazon asking for the team products to be removed.
