SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Several Latina community leaders, including some elected officials, met virtually Tuesday to show how much the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way of life for San Diego County’s Latina population.Among panelists was National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis, who said the coronavirus has hit her city in many ways. Solis pointed out that many that are affected are working class families, where the average income is about ,000 for a family of four.“Which means there may be both parents working one or two jobs. And when it comes to childcare or access to WIFI that’s working, to make sure they have access to health care; it’s imperative as leaders and as Latinas that we bridge those resources to those in most need,” said Sotelo-Solis.Sotelo-Solis also highlighted the importance of having discussions about the COVID-19 vaccine. Leaders within the Chicano Federation say even though Latinos make up the most positive COVID-19 cases locally, the level of confidence in a new vaccine is still low. They point to a number of factors, such as lack of access, not enough information or lack of trust, as contributing to that mindset.Sotelo-Solis volunteered to participate in one of the vaccine studies, and she said there is a call to action to get involved in this coronavirus fight.“Just as it took us months to get used to feel comfortable about wearing facial coverings and masks, it’s going to take conversations to discuss what you’re going to put in your body. But, doing it in ways so people understand and not create more fear or confusion because that’s not what this is for,” the mayor said.A key part in what she believes is needed to make sure the gaps that have been created by this pandemic are closed.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, and the mayors of Chula Vista and Oceanside were also participants in the Tuesday panel.According to Latina-focused nonprofit MANA de San Diego, the burden on Latino households comes as households already had lower pre-pandemic wages, less access to health care and job-related benefits. Latinas in particular have faced increased job losses and threats of economic insecurity, they said.Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas, a member of SANDAG's Board of Directors, shared that while Latinas comprise around 17% of the county's population, around 60% of that population is working in the three industries most impacted by job loss during the pandemic -- tourism, retail and education. Latinas account for 14% of total county employment, but 20% of employment in those sectors.Data from SANDAG paints a bleak picture in regard to Latinas during the pandemic. When compared to the white population, Hispanic populations are almost three times as likely to live in areas that have been highly impacted by COVID-19 and unemployment. Additionally, Hispanic residents account for a significant portion of essential workers, and many became unemployed due to temporary business closures as a result of COVID-19.A total of 70% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with above average unemployment, 49% in ZIP codes with above average COVID-19 cases and 42% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with both above average.More than 100,000 San Diegans have tested positive for the virus, and 57% of those have been Hispanic or Latino."As the pandemic grows in severity and stay-at-home orders are strengthened, it is the county's Latina population that will continue to face a disproportionate amount of risk and negative impacts," a statement from MANA de San Diego said.A Harvard, NPR and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study also found 46% of Latino households have used up "most or all" of their savings during the pandemic, with an additional 15% reporting they had no savings before COVID- 19 hit the United States.The same study found 66% of Latino households with children report serious problems caring for their children, including 36% who report serious problems keeping their children's education going."MANA de San Diego will continue to do our part in creating upward social mobility for Latinas," said Inez Gonzalez Perezchia, MANA de San Diego's executive director. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Statewide DUI arrests and fatalities saw a significant increase over Christmas weekend. A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sara Jacobs, winner of the race to replace the retiring Susan Davis in California's 53rd district, is getting ready to begin the transition to Congress."Kind of feels like college. I’ll be going to freshman orientation, picking my office room, staffing my office. Talking with congresswoman Davis, to others about a transition. And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans. "As young people, we need somebody who understands the dynamic and the perspective that we are coming from," says Glass Blake.Glass Blake says that while she knows Jacobs will work hard to represent all members of her district, she also realizes the importance of serving as a young woman in Congress. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld is seeing an unusually large number of sea lion rescues along the local coastline this winter."Most of those rescued are coming in emaciated and dehydrated," said Jennifer Zarate, SeaWorld Senior Animal Care Specialist.Zarate says since early December, SeaWorld has rescued 25 sea lions along the coastline."Definitely a little concerning," said Zarate.That is about three times the amount they normally see. Usually, rescue season begins in March, so these rescues are coming early. Those needing rescuing this winter are younger than normal, less than two years old. The cause is a mystery, but Zarate says those early winter storms could be playing a role. The big swells may be tiring the pups out, causing them to burn too many calories. The weather may also be impacting their food sources.."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. That's probably the reason why they might not find as much fish as they normally would," said Zarate. After being rescued by SeaWorld, the pups now doing well. So far, medical tests haven't turned up anything else unusual. The pups are gaining back weight as expected. Next week, the first three of those recently rescued will be released.SeaWorld says the coastline in Orange County has also seen an increase in sea lion rescues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State Assemblyman Todd Gloria continues to maintain a comfortable lead in the race to become San Diego's next mayor, according to a new scientific poll. The 10News-Union-Tribune poll shows City Councilmembers Scott Sherman, a Republican, and Barbara Bry, a Democrat, vying for the second spot.The top two votegetters March 3, regardless of party, move on the November general election. "Todd Gloria looks assured of punching his ticket, but who is he going to face? Is that going to be fellow Democrat Barbara Bry... or is it going to be Scott Sherman, a Republican, proving that this is still a two-party town," said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego. The poll, of 527 likely voters, shows Gloria leading the field with 29 percent of the vote. Sherman is in second with 18 percent, and Bry has 13 percent. The poll's margin of error was 5.3 percent, which Bry and Sherman are within. Democrats currently outnumber Republicans in registration by a two-to-one margin in the city, and independents outnumber Republicans by 40 percent. "When it gets close, when it gets into the single digits, the election day is really what matters," Kousser said. An additional question to be answered election day is the fate of Measure C. It would raise the overnight tax hotel guests pay in the city of San Diego by as much as 3.25 percent to pay for expanding the convention center, street repair and homeless services. The new poll shows the proposition with 61 percent support, 21 percent opposed and 18 percent still undecided. The measure requires two-thirds supermajority support to pass. Greg Block, a spokesman for the Measure C campaign, said he expects the support to increase as information on the proposal gets out. “A majority of San Diegans are uniting behind Measure C because it is straight forward in its approach to tackling the city’s most pressing issues with a tax on tourists, not San Diegans," he said. "People already know Measure C will help with homelessness, street repair and job creation by expanding of the Convention Center."But Michael McConnell, an advocate for the homeless who is leading the opposition, warned the measure has "loopholes and risks.""They are hiding up to Billion in bonds with no guarantee that money will be spent the right way," he said in a statement. "It does not even guarantee any housing and services for homeless families, seniors or veterans. We can’t trust the supporters who have taken money from a private prison company and been exposed for paying for support."Political analyst John Dadian said voters can expect a barrage of ads leading to the primary, noting mail in ballots are already out.
