Dozens of wildfires are burning throughout California in August as news is emerging that a wildfire burning in Northern California is the largest in state history. The fires burning a few miles apart, known as the Mendocino Complex, started on July 27 and now encompasses an area the size of Los Angeles. 2018 also marks the second straight year California has recorded the state's largest wildfire following the Thomas Fire in 2017. A fire that began Monday is also spreading quickly in Orange County. Known as the Holy Fire, the blaze is tearing through fuel that has been accumulating for 40 years. Currently, nearly 30 wildfires are burning throughout California. Each day since November 1, a group called Warriors Journey Home shows up at Veterans Memorial Park in Green, Ohio, offers a brief prayer and then turns their attention to a metal tree that measures less than five feet tall.They quietly hang 22 dog tags on the Witness Tree to represent the 22 veterans who die from suicide each day in the U.S. The final 22 tags will be placed on the tree on Veterans Day."We're going to have 242 dog tags on this tree. Those are 242 lives that didn't have to end this way and we can do something about it," said John Schluep, an Army veteran who runs the local chapter of Warriors Journey Home.Keith Van Buskirk, a veteran of the Marine Corps Reserve, said seeing all of the dog tags is emotional for him."It definitely provokes an emotional response in me. It makes me wish I could shake the hand or hug every one of those war fighters on that tree," Van Buskirk said.Both Schluep and Van Buskirk said they knew veterans who committed suicide."I was called yesterday about a young man who had taken his life, a Marine veteran from Iraq," Schluep said.The non-profit has a mission to provide spiritual healing and soul repair from the invisible wounds for veterans, families and the community.Schluep said there are many reasons for suicides among veterans, including a struggle to find wellness when adjusting from military culture back to civilian life."Loneliness, abandonment, isolation, lack of fitting into that community," Schluep said.Those in the community who support Warriors Journey Home are known as "strong hearts." Their role is considered crucial because they help share some of the burdens that veterans face."Part of that is opening our hearts to listen, to share that responsibility. That's what I want people to think about. We can do a better job," Schluep told WEWS.The group urges veterans, who may be struggling, to reach out to their organization, based in Cuyahoga Falls, by calling 330-715-5683 or contacting Veterans Affairs.Van Buskirk stressed many of us can do our part by doing something simple to help veterans."If you know somebody that served in the military, it's just an awareness thing about picking up the phone and calling to check in on them," he said.The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, seven days a week. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Some parents are upset after a document from the Cajon Valley Union School District was accidentally shared.Cajon Valley Union School District Superintendent David Miyashiro said an employee’s notes taken during a weekend planning summit -- which included the teachers union, school board members, and district management -- were inadvertently released.Under one of the sections in the notes is language describing parents as “stay at home mom, do not want to teach their kids,” as well as references to some parents being “right-wing” and “not all believe this is real and believe it will be finished by August.”Several parents obtained the document and were upset with how they were described. Demanding answers, some parents showed up at a closed-door district meeting on Tuesday evening where reopening plans were being discussed.Miyashiro sent 10News this statement on the matter: “I've both apologized to the parent community on our behalf and also addressed this with the employee. They weren't meant for public view but there's no excuse ... we don't speak about anyone that way.”Parents who spoke to 10News about the notes said they want something to come out of this situation, whether it’s training or education for staff members."The trust has been lost; the trust between parents and the school district. Trust between parents and superintendent, trust between parents and the board, I think. That's the feeling I get,” one parent said.The district, made up of 16 elementary schools and five middles schools, serves over 17,000 students in various communities in and around El Cajon. 1631

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three lanes of Interstate 8 closed Friday night after at least one person was killed in a fiery crash near State Route 67. Around 5:30 p.m. a man driving in the fast lane of I-8 lost control and swerved into the center divider before reaching the slow lane and hitting 1997 Wabash 53-foot trailer being towed by a 2013 Kenworth T660, according to California Highway Patrol. Witnesses reported that the Ford was cut off by an unidentified vehicle which merged from the eastbound #2 lane into the #1 (fast lane) lane directly into the Ford’s path of travel. The driver of the Ford made a turning movement to the left and impacted the concrete center divide wall. As a result, the Ford veered back across the eastbound traffic lanes and broadsided the trailer.As the crash happened, the Ford became lodged under the trailer and was dragged for several hundred feet. CHP said as the car came to rest the Ford and trailer burst into flames.  1016

Their remains were found in Rexburg, Idaho, earlier this month on property owned by Daybell, their stepfather. The children's mother, Lori Daybell (née Vallow), was arrested in connection with their disappearance earlier this year.According to the probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, the remains of one child was found wrapped in plastic and sealed with duct tape. The other was burned and buried next to a pet cemetery on the property.The documents also state that in the days before JJ's and Tylee's disappearance, Lori Daybell referred to her children as "zombies" in a conversation with a friend.Lori Daybell said part of her and her husband's religious beliefs was a mission to "rid the world of zombies."The document states that a "zombie refers to an individual whose mortal spirit has left their body and that their body is now the host of another spirit."Lori Daybell told a friend that JJ had become a zombie, loved Satan, and that the boy's "an increased vocabulary" was also evidence that JJ was a zombie. That same friend observed JJ's behavior and noted that it was the same as she had always seen him.TIMELINE: Investigation into Lori Daybell, disappearance of JJ Vallow and Tylee RyanCourt documents also state that GPS tracking put Lori Daybell's brother, Alex Cox, on Chad Daybell's property near the burial sites on Sept. 9 — one day after JJ and Tylee was last seen.Cox later died on Dec. 11. Authorities have since determined Cox's death was of natural causes.On the day officers searched Chad Daybell's home on June 9, he was seen observing officers conduct the search. When officers found the remains, he attempted to drive away and was later caught.Both Lori and Chad Daybell are now behind bars.
