WUHAN, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese man nearing 80 years old was recently diagnosed with HIV and doctors say he probably caught the virus through having "frequent unprotected sex."The case is the latest to support the opinions of experts who believe the virus is spreading fast among older Chinese men who have been largely neglected in the country's anti-AIDS campaigns. The latest diagnosed man, whose identity has been concealed for privacy reasons, was admitted to Zhongnan Hospital in central Chinese city of Wuhan with a lingering fever. He was later found to be HIV positive, doctors at the hospital said Friday. The man was widowed in his old age, has no record of blood transfusions, but had an "active unprotected sexual life," they said.Gao Shicheng, a HIV specialist in Zhongnan Hospital, said that HIV/AIDS has started to infect middle-aged and elderly Chinese men who have little or no AIDS prevention knowledge.Gao said this year alone he had diagnosed two senior men with HIV. Both contracted the virus through unprotected sex outside marriage.A recent survey conducted by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) shows that among the new HIV infections, the percentage of people aged 50 or above with it grew from 7.8 to 14.9 percent. Most of them were male and were found to have contracted the virus through sexual intercourse.Experts say the spread of HIV/AIDS has picked up among older Chinese men in recent years because China's senior citizens have become healthier, more open-minded about sex, and increasingly bored after retirement. They called for anti-AIDS campaigns, which usually target young people with a focus on gays, sex workers, and rural migrants, to also cover seniors in a bid to raise the awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention knowledge.China is fighting a hard battle to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS. According to a UNAIDS estimate, the country had about 740,000 people living with HIV by the end of 2009. Among them, 105,000 were estimated to have AIDS.By the end of August 2010, the cumulative total of reported HIV positives in China was 361,599, with 65,104 recorded deaths.Sex, other than blood transmission or mother-to-child transmission, has become the main channel for the spread of HIV in China.

BEIJING, August 1 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. researchers have discovered a genetic mutation unique to African Americans that links to heighten their asthma risk, according to reports published on Sunday in the journal Nature Genetics.Researchers of University of Chicago found a gene, PYHIN1, and its variations may account for asthma risk in people of African descent. In their study, they examined data from nine previous genome-wide association studies, totaling more than 2 million single nucleotide polymorphisms in 3,246 asthma patients and 3,385 control patient, 1,702 patient-parent groupings, 355 family-based cases, and 468 family-based controls. In the study, the researchers found that between 26 percent and 29 percent of people of African-descent carried at least one copy of the gene.  In particular, one polymorphism of the gene was 34 percent more likely found in African-American and Afro-Caribbean people with asthma.  More interestingly, this variant of the gene is rarely found in Caucasian people and in Latino population, it was found in less than 5 percent. This new variant is part of a family of genes linked with the body's response to viral infections. It is thought to be involved in interferon signaling, which could influence the occurrence of asthma. The team stressed that each gene variant on its own plays only a small role in increasing asthma risk, but that risk could be multiplied when combined with other risk genes and with environmental factors.

PARIS, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Solar Impulse, a Swiss solar-powered aircraft, finally arrived in Paris on Tuesday after three days' delay, ready for a debut at the biennial International Paris Air Show. The 1.6-ton solar-powered plane was expected to land in Paris on Saturday but technical problems and bad weather forced it to turn back to Brussels. The plane took its first international flight from Switzerland to Brussels on May 13 and then marked its second international flight to Paris. It has 12,000 solar cells mounted on the wings, which provide momentum for its four electric motors.Solar Impulse is the first aeroplane designed to fly day and night without requiring fuel and without producing carbon emission. The 64-meter-wingspan (as wide as an Airbus A340) can fly at extremely slow speed and has a weight equivalent to that of an average family car.Regarded as a "special guest" in the show, Solar Impulse made a historic 26-hour day and night flight without fuel in July 2010.During the Paris air show from 20 to 26 June, visitors can enjoy a close look at the innovative plane on ground every day and if weather condition permits, flying displays will take place.According to Paris Air Show organizers, 59 of the top 100 companies in the air industry worldwide will be present. More than 1,800 small and medium-sized companies will be exhibiting their products during the one-week show. Enditem

RAMALLAH, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's special envoy to the Middle East, Wu Sike, said here Friday that his country fully supports the Palestinians' right to establish an independent state in a balanced manner and through peace talks."China supports the Palestinian people and their cause. We also support the Palestinians to get the United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state on the lands occupied in 1967 with Jerusalem as capital," he told Xinhua in Ramallah. The envoy said peace talks with Israel are the best way to reach a settlement, adding that gaining UN recognition is not an alternative to peace negotiations.China supports a two-state solution -- Israel and an independent Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security, he said, noting that he believes the current developments in the Middle East have a positive impact on the Palestinian cause."The Middle East witnesses many changes. People have many chances to participate in political life. The Palestinian cause is a main issue that attracts the attention of the Arab people," he said."The recent meeting of the Arab League Peace Initiative Follow- Up Committee in Qatar assures the Arabs' support to the Palestinians' bid for full UN membership," he said. "This will help the Palestinians gain more international support."The Palestinians say they will approach the UN in September to get full membership of the world body as peace talks with Israel have long been deadlocked, a move disapproved by Israel and the United States.Wu expressed his appreciation of the reconciliation deal signed between Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party and Hamas movements in Cairo in May."This move will help the Palestinians to have more countries on their side," he said.Wu said his Middle East tour was taking place at an important moment as the region is witnessing crucial changes, stressing that China respects the choices of the peoples."The Arab peoples are able to make their own decisions toward development," said the envoy. He also said the ties between China and the Arab countries are based on strong foundations, regardless of the changes taking place in the region.Wu met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other officials Tuesday, the first day of his ongoing Middle East tour. This was Wu's second visit to Palestinian territories this year, after which he will travel on to Israel, Egypt and France.
