SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say they have received enough funding to replace 100 miles of border fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.The Trump Administration will put forth about .6 billion through the 2018 Congressional appropriations.  The new border wall provides a comprehensive system of wall, lighting, and technologies, Acting Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said during a press conference Friday.In San Diego, a total of 28 miles of border barrier will be replaced. Fourteen miles of "dilapidated" border wall constructed with landing mats will be replaced with new steel bollard wall, according to Vitiello. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California health officials announced Friday the steepest climb in positive coronavirus cases in history."When I'm worried I'll tell you so you can worry with me and we're there," California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said. He's worried hospitals could be overwhelmed if we don't stop the rapid spread of the virus."This rapid rate of rise could be even higher if we don't act soon," Dr. Erica Pan, state epidemiologist and deputy director of the California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases, said.Pan added that we could have a higher spike than we saw over the summer.Many are taking their words to heart and stocked up to stay home. San Diegans saw empty shelves and product limits this week across the county, but officials urge consumers not to worry."We didn't put limits on early enough. There's plenty of product in the supply chain and we just thought it would be better to be proactive because when people only buy what they need there's plenty of supply in the supply chain," said. Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, asking customers to only buy what they need.When it comes to another lockdown, Director of the National Institute of Health Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's unnecessary. "Public health measures, not lockdown of the country, but public health measures that are simple and easy to understand. The universal wearing of masks. The physical distancing. The avoiding congregating and crowded places. Outdoors is better than indoors, washing hands. It sounds simple in the context of this ominous outbreak but it can turn it around and that's what we need to do," Fauci said.Dr. Ghaly said that doesn't mean more restrictions are off the table. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Baseball is back, and that could mean potentially good news for businesses near Petco Park in downtown San Diego.On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced a 60-game season will begin on July 23 and 24. Players are expected to return for training camps on July 1.While the MLB announcement did not specify the role of fans, multiple reports suggest the season will begin in empty ballparks with no fans in attendance.To reduce travel, the schedule will include 10 games for each team against its divisional opponents, along with 20 games against the opposite leagues corresponding geographical division.For the San Diego Padres, that will mean 10 games each against the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies. The Padres will also play teams from the American League West."Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon," MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a news release. "We have provided the Players Association with a schedule to play 60 games and are excited to provide our great fans with Baseball again.Businesses near Petco Park welcomed the news.Brant Crenshaw, co-owner of the sports bar Social Tap, which is located next to the ballpark, said the pandemic has hurt business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California health officials released new guidelines for indoor and outdoor youth sports, whether it is school-related, community sponsored, or club sports.The new guidance from the state’s Department of Public Health also applies to recreational adult sports.According to the state, inter-team competitions will not be allowed until Jan. 25, 2021, at the earliest. State officials will revisit this plan during the first week of January to see if any changes need to be made.Players and teams are allowed to practice, but health and safety measures -- such as social distancing -- must be in place.In the new guidelines, sports are categorized by indoor or outdoor, and then they are classified under three categories: low-contact, moderate-contact, and high-contact. The sports are then grouped based on risk tier.For San Diego County, which is in the state’s purple tier as of Dec. 15, only outdoor low-contact sports -- which includes golf, tennis, and swimming -- are allowed to compete.Once the county reaches the red tier, sports like baseball, softball, and cheerleading will be able to compete.Sports such as basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball would not be allowed to compete until San Diego County is in the state’s orange tier.The state’s new guidance comes months after children, parents, and coaches held rallies and voiced their frustrations about not being able to play.Because of the state’s rules, many teams -- specifically baseball and soccer -- have traveled to states like Arizona to play competitively because of less strict rules.Under California’s new guidance, teams can only compete against teams from the same county, and they cannot compete outside of the state.Click here to view the state's complete guidelines 1777
