GERMANY — Bayer plans to slash thousands of jobs as part of a corporate overhaul following its acquisition of Monsanto.The chemicals and pharmaceuticals group said it would cut 12,000 jobs out of its global workforce of 118,000 by the end of 2021. A significant number of reductions will be made in its home market of Germany.More than 4,000 jobs will go at the company's crop sciences division, a consequence of Bayer's acquisition of US rival Monsanto earlier this year.Bayer (BAYRY) spent over billion buying Monsanto. To gain regulatory approval for the deal, Bayer agreed to sell assets including its seed business and some herbicide brands.The German company said in a statement on Thursday that it was considering whether to sell more assets, including the sunscreen business Coppertone and footwear brand Dr. Scholl's.It will get out of the business of animal health, and sell its 60% stake in Currenta, a company that provides services to chemical companies.Shares in Bayer have dropped by more than a third so far this year, in part because of concerns over the company's exposure to lawsuits involving Roundup, a weedkiller made by Monsanto.In August, San Francisco jurors awarded 9 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper who said his terminal cancer had been caused by the product.The damages were later reduced by a judge, but hundreds of other patients have made similar claims. Getting into an Ivy League or top ten university is typically extremely competitive and difficult, but the effects of the pandemic may be making it easier for some to now get into their dream school.Part of the reason for this is that enrollment is down at college campuses across the country.One poll, conducted by College Reaction and Axios, shows roughly 22 percent of college students have decided to take a gap year. That equates to about 4 million fewer college students enrolled this academic year.“Right now, colleges, as you have seen, they are desperate for tuition dollars,” said Christopher Rim, CEO of Command Education, a company that helps students get into competitive colleges. "Six out of 10 colleges want to fill their classes.”For months now, Rim has seen how the pandemic is making it much easier for students to get into some highly-competitive schools.“We had students who were waitlisted at top 10 and top 15 universities, and in a typical year, they would not have been getting in,” said Rim. “In June or July, they were getting offers of admissions, saying they are off the waitlist.”Rim says it’s because students have been deferring enrollment or taking a gap year.The gap-year trend and resulting reduced competition is also leading to a trend in college transfers. Rim’s company has had three to four times as many college students contact them this year, looking for help with a transfer.“We are having all of these transfer students reach out to us and say, ‘You know what? I want to transfer. This is the time to transfer. I’ll have the best shot. If my dream school was Georgetown or if my dream school was Yale, what do I need to do to stand out and get in because these schools also need students?’” said Rim.While current transfer students may have less competition, and thus, a better shot at getting into their preferred schools, high school seniors should prepare for this trend to reverse when they are applying for admissions in the fall of 2021.“For the current students right now, who are applying to colleges and they are seniors in high school, they are going to have the most difficult time,” said Rim. “Because all the students who took the gap year have taken those spots. Harvard has said 20 percent of their freshman incoming class has opted to take a gap year, which means Harvard is going to take 20 percent fewer freshmen.” 2385

HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A teenager who started the massive Eagle Creek Fire in Oregon has been ordered to pay more than in restitution, according to KOMO.The judge made the decision Monday. The teen’s attorney argued that the massive restitution would violate Oregon and U.S. constitutions because it would inflict “cruel and unusual punishment.”The Eagle Creek Fire started in September of 2017 and destroyed more than 48,000 acres of forest land in the Columbia River Gorge.The teen was 15 at the time of the fire. According to authorities, the teen was tossing fireworks into brush while hiking on the Eagle Creek Trail. One of the fireworks ignited the fire. 670
