More studies seem to indicate there is some connection between a person’s severity of COVID-19 symptoms and their blood type. However, experts agree more research is needed and these studies do not allow people with certain blood types to disregard pandemic safety precautions.The two latest studies, one from Denmark and one from Canada, both appear to show that people with blood type O may be slightly less vulnerable to COVID-19 and have a reduced chance of getting severely ill.In the Danish study, researchers looked at more than 7,400 people who tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, 38.4 percent had blood type O, while other research indicates that blood type makes up about 41.7 percent of the population.In the Canadian study, they looked at the length of hospital stays for 95 people critically ill with the coronavirus. They found the portion of patients who needed mechanical ventilation was higher in those with blood type A or AB when compared with a group of patients with blood type O or B.Researchers also found the blood type A or AB group had longer stays in the intensive care unit, a median of 13.5 days, compared to the other group with blood type O or B who had a median of 9 days."I don't think this supersedes other risk factors of severity like age and co-morbities and so forth,” Dr. Mypinder Sekhon, who is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care Medicine and Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia told CNN."If one is blood group A, you don't need to start panicking. And if you're blood group O, you're not free to go to the pubs and bars."Researchers say this information could be used in some way in regard to treatment of COVID-19. Both studies were published in the journal Blood Advances this week.Previous studies have indicated similar results in patients with blood type O.In July, a study looking at 1,600 patients in Spain and Italy showed slightly higher rates of severe respiratory failure in patients with blood type A compared to those with blood type O.Also this summer, the genealogy website 23andMe.com released data they collected from 750,000 participants who identified they have tested positive for COVID-19.“Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said at the time. 2425

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — Milwaukee County voters will be asked about legalizing marijuana this November after the County Board of Supervisors approved a referendum question on a 15-1 vote Thursday morning.The non-binding, advisory referendum on the November ballot would ask voters how they feel about approving the sale, usage and taxation of recreational marijuana.The official question, proposed by County Supervisor John F. Cars included in the recall are 2012 to 2018 model years with 2-liter four-cylinder engines.The recall states a canister purge valve can malfunction. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - The National City City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday night to introduce a new ordinance that aims to close a loophole in a state law that prohibits the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits.Enacted on January 1, 2019, the new state law prohibits stores from selling animals unless they come from shelters or non-profit rescues. However, some pet stores have continued to sell what appear to be purebred and designer mix puppies that come from a small group of newly formed rescue organizations.One of those groups is called Bark Adoptions, based in Menifee. A 10News investigation found Bark Adoptions had been importing puppies from another supposed rescue in Iowa that had ties to commercial breeders.At National City Puppies, one of the two remaining pet stores in the city, signs on the dog cages in May showed they came from Bark Adoptions.The manager of National City Puppies, David Salinas, said he did not know where the dogs at his store came from beyond the listed rescues. But he defended his store in front of the city council, saying it comes down to consumer choice.“It’s the American way to have the freedom to choose where to buy a puppy,” said Salinas.As written now, the new ordinance says “a pet shop or retail pet store or its operator shall not sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction or otherwise dispose of a cat, dog or rabbit.”There are exceptions, however, that would allow pet stores to offer “a cat, dog or rabbit owned by an animal shelter or animal rescue organization for purposes of adoption” but only if “the pet shop does not receive any fee from the adoption and does not have any monetary or ownership interest” in the animals. The ordinance still has to come back to the city council for a second reading and adoption before it goes into effect. 1835

MILWAUKEE -- Some Milwaukee high schoolers are crushed after the dress they ordered for prom wasn’t done in time for the dance.Indira Ali, Riverside University High School Senior, wanted a custom made prom dress for her dance on April 20.Back in February, she met with Milwaukee designer, Kelvin Hayden and they came up with a design. She said weeks went by and she couldn’t get a hold of him. “I’ve been trying to contact him about it see how my dress is coming along. Every time he would give me an excuse on why I can’t see it, why he’s not returning calls,” Ali said. Ali said her mom put down a 0 deposit for the dress through PayPal.She said she was promised the dress would be done before the dance, but it wasn’t. Hours before prom she was forced to find a different one.“He told me it was going to be done in four weeks and those four weeks came and went by and I still didn’t have a dress,” Ali said. Her mom and others were furious and shared their stories on Facebook, demanding Hayden give these girls their money back. Hayden talked with Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee over the phone. He said he refunded everyone and has apologized to the young girls and their mothers.He said the company he ordered lace from for one of the prom dresses kept sending the wrong kind and weeks went by and he was forced to order a different material. “I ordered some of that fabric and paid for express shipping which was well over 0, it came in and mind you, it came in the day before her prom,” said Hayden. Issues with that one dress, Hayden said, delayed his work on three other prom dresses. With 25 years experience as a designer, Hayden told WTMJ he’s never had anything like this happen before. “There’s nothing I can say that’s going to bring their special day back,” Hayden said. A photographer, Timothy Ricketts, saw the story on social media and decided he would find a way to make it up to the girls.He said he plans to get hair stylists and makeup artists involved and take professional photos of the teens for free.
