BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the development of the service industry as part of the government's efforts to promote economic restructuring and to accelerate the transformation of its economic development pattern.Li made his remarks at a meeting focusing on the development and reform of the service industry sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on Thursday.The service industry is not only conducive to expanding job opportunities, but also has a low cost of resources, Li said.He further called on local authorities to be innovative in using their regulatory systems to shore up the development of the service industry.Representatives from Shanghai, and provinces of Liaoning, Jiangsu, Hubei and Sichuan explained their experiences in creating service industries.

LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. THE HAGUE, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Xue Hanqin was sworn in Monday as a judge of the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ), becoming the first Chinese woman to get the job.Another female judge, Joan E. Donoghue from the United States, assumed office together with Xue."It is the first time in the court's history that two female judges will serve simultaneously," the ICJ said in a statement.Almost all ICJ judges had been male with only one exception -- British Dame Rosalyn Higgins, who served on the court from 1995 to 2009.Xue, a veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, was elected to the ICJ with all 15 votes in the Security Council and a majority of votes in the UN General Assembly in June. She is the third Chinese judge in the Court."More and more women take active part in the major international justice organizations, which marks the improvement of civilization," Xue told Xinhua.Xue is no stranger to the Dutch city. She used to serve as Chinese ambassador in The Hague."What is remarkable about the two new judges is not just that they will bring down the average age of the members of the ICJ," Dr. Olivier Ribbelink, senior researcher at T.M.C. BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday wrapped up a fruitful visit to France, opening a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.With Hu's three-day visit to France, which started on Thursday, the heads of state and top legislators of the two countries have visited each other's country within one year for the first time.Earlier this year, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, visited China.
