CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire responded Saturday afternoon to a large fire burning near the border in Campo. According to the agency, the fire is raging near Forest Gate Road and Border Road.Although Southern California Air Operations tweeted around 11:45 a.m. that the fire "is now well established on the U.S. side," Cal Fire says the blaze never reached the U.S. Air Operations said it sent several aircraft to the fire, including two tankers and two helicopters, but around 1 p.m., all aircraft were released from the fire. The agency said the fire is burning in light flashy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. The blaze is estimated at 50 to 100 acres currently, Cal Fire reported. I think analytics is going to take the game to the next level," said Roger Weingarth, President and CEO of Blast Motion.The company's technology uses a sensor that attaches to the end bat, as high-powered cameras record everything measurable, from bat speed to body rotation. That is a big edge in training athletes and a boon for coaches in search of data for recruiting.Among the company's customers: thousands of high school baseball programs and hundreds of college baseball and softball programs, along with nearly all Major League Baseball teams. For the last decade, Blast Motion has called Carlsbad home. The company has some 80 employees, most of them in Carlsbad. "Having this wonderful combination of education, engineering talent - as well as authentic athletes - is relevant and very important for our success here in Carlsbad. People are very active here, active in sports," said Weingarth.About five years ago, Chris Crawford was one of those athletes. He was a surfer who was tired of getting his car dirty. He invented a pressurized portable shower in his garage in Carlsbad, showed it off at the city's street fairs, before a Kickstarter campaign, viral video, and an appearance on the show Shark Tank helped lead his company Rinsekit to success. (KGTV) - For the second time this year, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet, has abruptly canceled all scheduled flights and stopped booking new flights indefinitely. Kelly Skemps was scheduled to fly from McClellan-Palomar airport to Las Vegas on Friday for her brother’s 50th birthday. But Thursday morning she got a call and a text alerting her that her flight had been canceled.“I was shocked,” said Skemps, who admits she was initially excited for the airline to be open.“I thought it was going to be perfect,” she said.Cal Jet bills itself as an easy and competitively-priced flight option from North County to Las Vegas.But this is the second time the small airline has inconvenienced customers by cancelling flights and blocking out their schedule.In February, Cal Jet went dark for nearly two weeks. President George Wozniak said the company they lease the plane from, Elite Air, needed it to fly NCAA basketball players.When they finally resumed operations in March, Wozniak told 10News, “we feel very confident going forward that we have the extra crew and airplanes necessary to fulfill that travel mission for these people.”Cal Jet did not respond to a request for comment after the latest round of cancellations, though a customer service representative attributed the problems to a lack of “aircraft and crew availability.”In an email to customers sent late Thursday, Cal Jet attributed the temporary closure to their efforts to expand to other cities. 1498

Californians have voted to carve out specific gig workers from a state employment law about who is considered an employee and eligible for benefits.That means people who drive for Uber and Lyft will remain classified as independent contractors and will not be eligible for employee benefits.A California Supreme Court decision in 2018 created a strict test to decide whether a self-employed worker, like gig workers, should be considered employees.In response to the ruling, lawmakers amended Assembly Bill 5 in 2019 to add additional professions where services could be provided by independent contractors, and would not necessarily be employees. However, no changes were made for app-based companies like Lyft, Uber and DoorDash.The state law made app-based drivers employees, and would pay them for their time both while they are driving and they are waiting for a new ride, and offer employee benefits like paid sick leave and workers compensation for one-the-job injuries, the Los Angeles Times explains.Since the proposition has passed, drivers will remain categorized as independent contractors, although the proposition includes wording to require companies to provide an hourly wage for time spent driving equal to 120% of minimum wage. The language also gives drivers a stipend for purchasing health insurance coverage when their driving time averages at least 15 hours a week.
