More than four and a half million children live in a home with an unlocked, loaded gun. Three out of 4 of those kids know where the firearms are kept in their house.The “End Family Fire” campaign released this week highlights the importance of safe gun storage in a home in order to keep children safe.Every day, 8 children and teens--ages 19 and under--are unintentionally shot by weapons that are found in the home.Hector Adames' nephew, Joshua, was one of them.“Joshua was shot in the stomach; [it] went through his stomach,” says Adames. “And unfortunately, when Joshua went down, he never got back up.”Kyleanne Hunter, with the Brady Center to Combat Gun Violence says it’s a tragedy that could be prevented by properly storing weapons.The nonprofit organization is the group behind the “End Family Fire” campaign. Hunter says they don’t want to confiscate guns, but instead encourage parents to keep guns locked up, keep ammo separate and let family and visitors know there are firearms in the home and locked away.It's advice Adames hopes parents will take.“We just want to try to prevent any family from having the same kind of pain that this has put my family through. 1185

MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865

More than 136,000 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 in the U.S. on Tuesday according to a Johns Hopkins database, marking the fourth time this month that the country has broken the record for confirmed COVID-19 cases in a single day.Tuesday also marked the deadliest day of the pandemic in several months. More than 1,400 Americans died of the virus on Tuesday, the most recorded in a single day since 1,500 Americans died of the virus on Aug. 12.Tuesday's tally shattered the previous record of 128,000, which was set on Saturday. The mark continues a disturbing and troubling trend as health officials suspect spread will only increase as social gatherings move indoors during winter months.About a million Americans have contracted COVID-19 in the first 10 days of November.While the exploding spread rate is concerning on its own, several states across the country report that they are nearing full hospital capacity as severe cases of the virus increase.North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum said earlier this week that hospitals have already reached operating capacity and fears that facilities could be pushed past their capabilities in the coming months.In Iowa, the state's largest city is also nearing hospital capacity as available beds dwindle.More than 10.2 million Americans have contracted virus, and 239,000 have died since the virus reached the U.S. in February.
