SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A prominent local civil rights leader called on the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Monday to fire a deputy who allegedly shared a "lewd and racist and vile" altered photograph of George Floyd taken from the viral video of the Minnesota man's death in police custody.The doctored image showed a nude male "porn star" kneeling on Floyd in place of Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as the detainee repeatedly protested that he could not breathe, according to NAACP San Diego Branch President Francine Maxwell. Ricardo Lopez, media relations director for the regional law enforcement agency."We were so disgusted that an employee may have shared such a vulgar image that within minutes we began to take action," Lopez stated. "Hours after being made aware of this incident, the employee was removed from his official duties and had his peace officer authority removed."In calling for the deputy's ouster, Maxwell also cited his shootings of suspects in 2005 and 2006, describing them as excessive and unjustifiable uses of lethal force. She said the lawman "must go" because "this is far from the first time he has shown himself to be an overtly racist and deplorable human being" and because "this (doctored-photo) incident shows he has clearly not changed his evil, racist and hate-filled ways and (that) he is a danger to all residents of the county."The sheriff's spokesman said the department's leaders "understand the public concern" over the episode and "want to bring the matter to a just conclusion as soon as possible." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Nearly half of San Diego County's 1.95 million voters have cast their ballots in the Nov. 3 election, the Registrar of Voters reported Thursday.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday, according to the registrar's office.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.Ballots received by the registrar's office this week should be processed in time for the first release of election night results to be posted shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.Voters can return their marked ballot in the pre-paid postage envelope to any U.S. Postal Service office or collection box. The Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa is open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for those preferring to vote in person.Voters additionally have the option to drop off their ballot at one of 126 drop-off locations around the county -- including dozens of libraries, YMCAs, county offices and The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park.Voters also can also cast their ballots at their assigned polling place, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Saturday through next Monday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An elderly disabled woman was assaulted and seriously injured in downtown San Diego, police said Saturday.The victim, a 73-year-old homeless woman who uses a walker, was attacked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and B Street at 10:10 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit.She was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, the lieutenant said. Because of the serious nature of the woman's injuries, investigators from the SDPD's homicide unit were called to the scene."Detectives are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses," Dobbs said. "A man was seen in an altercation with the victim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A professional skateboarder and Encinitas resident who pleaded guilty last year to federal drug trafficking charges was sentenced Friday to five years of supervised release, with one year spent on GPS house arrest.Prosecutors had sought a 41-month prison sentence for Robert Lorifice, who pleaded guilty along with Elizabeth Alexandra Landis to charges involving the distribution and sale of heroin and methamphetamine.Lorifice's attorney, Stefano Molea, said his 32-year-old client's path to drugs began when he fractured his tailbone, a "particularly painful" injury that led to an opioid dependence and eventual heroin addiction.RELATED: Encinitas pro skateboarder, girlfriend admit federal drug trafficking chargesHis substance abuse and other physical issues stemming from his injury affected a skating career that previously garnered Lorifice sponsorships and participation in the X-Games, where he won three medals.Molea said Lorifice eventually "hit rock bottom" and "began associating with people that eventually led him down the path of selling drugs."Molea said Lorifice has gone through rehab, enrolled in school, and secured his first non-skateboarding job."Mr. Lorifice is extremely grateful to the court for believing in him and giving him a second chance," the attorney said, "He looks forward to helping those in the skateboarding community realize the dangers of drug use and has recently teamed up with the Ryan Bowers Foundation to work with kids with the hopes of showing them how skateboarding can be a healthy outlet to obtain and maintain their sobriety."RELATED: Three arrested in drug seizure at Encinitas homeProsecutors said Lorifice admitted selling drugs out of his home, and disposing of methamphetamine and other substances when investigators served a search warrant at his home in 2018.Investigators found 193 grams of meth, 231.6 grams of heroin, more than 800 Xanax pills, Roxicodone pills, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms, along with materials used in drug sales, such as a digital scale, three cell phones and ,824 in cash, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Lorifice's home was searched again that December, and on that occasion, he attempted to flush a "tennis-ball sized chunk of methamphetamine down the toilet," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Authorities also seized around 31 grams of black tar heroin, 18 grams of meth and ,926 in cash from drug sales.Landis, described by prosecutors as Lorifice's then-girlfriend in a statement issued last year, is slated to be sentenced in January. 2579

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person was killed today during a multi-vehicle traffic crash on the Interstate 15 Express in San Diego.The crash on the southbound route, north of Carmel Mountain Road, occurred at about 7:40 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.The crashed involved at least four to five vehicles, the CHP said.There was no other immediate information. 372
