SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres allowed an unearned run in the first inning of a 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels Monday evening in their first exhibition game at Petco Park in 2020.Like most sporting events around the world, fans were barred from attending under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.Angels reliever Keynan Middleton took a knee and clenched his right fist above his head during the playing of the national anthem.David Fletcher scored the lone run from second base when pitcher Garrett Richards fielded a ground ball by Tommy La Stella and threw to second base in an attempt to start a double play and the ball went into center field.Fletcher singled on a 1-2 slider leading off the inning and moved to second on Mike Trout's walk. The Padres were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and did not have a runner reach third base. The Padres were outhit, 7-6. Edward Olivares, the No. 9 hitter in their lineup, had the Padres only extra-base hit, a one-out double in the third, but was unable to advance as Fernando Tatis flew out and Trent Grisham grounded out.The Padres also had runners reach second in the sixth and seventh innings.Tatis singled leading off the sixth. Pinch-runner Jake Croneworth moved to second on Grisham's ground out, but Manny Machado and Tommy Pham struck out to end the inning.Eric Hosmer singled leading off the seventh. Pinch-runner Josh Naylor went to second one out later on Hansel Robles' wild pitch.Jurickson Profar walked to give the Padres runners on first and second but Austin Hedges and Olivares struck out to end the inning.Richards (0-1) allowed five hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking one in his third appearance in an exhibition game in 2020.Richards was limited to three September games in 2019 -- his first season with the Padres after spending the first eight seasons of his major league career with the Angels -- as he recovered from Tommy John surgery performed in 2018 to repair a damaged ulnar collateral ligament.Angels starter Griffin Canning (1-0) allowed three hits in six innings, striking out five and walking two.Ty Buttrey, the Angels fourth pitcher, allowed a single to the second batter he faced in the ninth, pinch-hitter Webster Rivas, but got Greg Garcia to fly out and pinch-hitter Owen Miller to ground out for his first save in exhibition play in 2020.The Padres will play one more exhibition game -- Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, then begin the regular season Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park. 2587

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council today unanimously approved a 20-year lease that will pave the way for a museum and community center at a city-owned property adjacent to Chicano Park. The Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center has for several decades sought to move into the 9,890-square-feet building at 1960 National Ave., which formerly housed an adult education campus. The vacant property will allow the 48-year-old nonprofit to expand services, programs and exhibitions related to the art, history and sciences of the Americas, with an emphasis on U.S.-Mexico border region cultures.Chicano Park has gotten new playground equipment and bathrooms in recent years, "but there was always something missing. And this is the piece that was missing," City Councilman David Alvarez said."I want to thank you for saying 'yes' to the community this time because this community has heard 'no' a lot more than it has heard 'yes' over the years," he told his colleagues. "Chicano Park is what it is today because of the community... The museum and cultural center will be successful because 1103

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego city leaders said Tuesday that more than 1,100 people will secure permanent or longer-term housing by the end of the year through Operation Shelter to Home -- the city's COVID-19 homeless shelter at the San Diego Convention Center. The shelter opened its doors in April as a measure to halt the spread of COVID-19 among San Diego's homeless population, and currently houses around 900 people per day, and housed a peak of 1,300 people daily, according to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.Faulconer called the project "a public health success story" at a Tuesday morning news conference, saying only 27 residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of more than 9,300 tests administered since the shelter opened.Officials said that to date, more than 840 individuals and 45 families sheltered at the convention center have obtained housing, while around 400 others will soon be moved into housing units the city secured through the purchase of two hotels in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. That purchase will convert the hotels into 332 furnished apartment units and residents will receive on-site supportive services, officials said.In addition to those moved into housing, others will be matched to housing resources like vouchers or other rental subsidies, the city said."This pandemic brought our region together like never before to work toward our shared goals of protecting our most vulnerable residents and removing barriers to housing -- and now over 1,100 people will have a permanent place of their own to call home," Faulconer said.San Diego Mayor-elect Todd Gloria said the collaborative efforts to bring Operation Shelter to Home together was "a bright spot" amid the pandemic."This is a testament to what we can do if we choose to do it," said Gloria, who said efforts like Operation Shelter to Home must be continued even after the pandemic ends."It shouldn't take a pandemic to care about our unsheltered population," he said. 1983

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units. The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. There have been 57 confirmed outbreaks over the past seven days and 221 cases associated with those outbreaks.A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.A complete list of county COVID-19 testing sites, how to make appointments and hours can be found at www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemio logy/dc/2019-nCoV/testing/testing-schedule.html.Though county officials advised residents to avoid holiday gatherings, anyone who participated in a gathering was urged to get tested, as well as people who recently returned from travel, people with any symptoms and people at higher risk for COVID-19, whether or not they display symptoms. In advising against holiday gatherings, San Diego County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox pointed to a massive uptick in cases after Thanksgiving -- including the region's highest daily total coming three weeks after the holiday with 3,611 cases reported last Friday."We cannot ignore the reality that we are in a bad place right now," Cox said. "We're making a special plea to avoid large gatherings with those outside your immediate family. This one time, this one year."If people have already traveled, they should be extra cautious about spreading the virus, Cox said.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, 44.1% of the county's cumulative cases have been reported after Thanksgiving. San Diego County is on pace to report another 600 deaths due to the virus before the end of January, she said."We don't want to see what happened after Thanksgiving happen again," Wooten said. "We must continue to stay apart to get the spread of the virus under control. If we don't, cases, hospitalizations and deaths will continue to soar."The 11-county Southern California region is still reporting zero available ICU beds. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order he issued for all of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date.Current stay-at-home orders took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and were originally set to end on Monday. Newsom did not give an indication of when a decision on extending the orders will be made or much longer they will remain in place. 2874
