XI'AN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 100-member team of Chinese soldiers left here Friday for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for an eight-month UN peace-keeping operation there. They formed the first batch of China's 12th peace-keeping team to DRC since 2003. They will be joined by a second batch of 118 soldiers who are scheduled to depart on Nov. 28.The 12th team comprises military engineers and medical staff. BEIJING, Nov. 16 ( Xinhua) -- The General Office of China's State Council, or the Cabinet, on Tuesday issued a circular, ordering more strict fire control measures to "resolutely" prevent serious fire accidents.Monday's blaze in an apartment building in Shanghai's downtown area left 53 people dead and more than 70 injured, one of the deadliest recorded fire disasters in the city.The circular ordered extensive campaigns to inspect and remove fire hazards and to educate the public about fire control, as well as strict implementation of the accountability system for fire accidents.Besides those directly responsible for serious fire accidents, local government chiefs would also be held accountable, it said.Police have detained eight people in connection with the deadly blaze.Further, an initial investigation has blamed the disaster on unlicensed welders, some of whom are among the detained.
HONG KONG, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said on Saturday the government will not slack off in its fight against drugs, despite a 20 percent drop in the number of drug abusers aged below 21 in the first half of this year.Speaking at the 2010 Fight Crime Conference, Tsang said both the government and the community attach great importance to drug problems.Although the government's efforts in beating drugs have started to deliver results, it will not slack off and will continue to allocate money to anti-drug programs, he said.Praising law-enforcement officers' professionalism in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong, Tsang said the city's crime rate continued to stay at a low level.According to Chief Secretary Henry Tang, Hong Kong's crime situation for the year's first 10 months remained stable, with overall crime dropping 3.2 percent.
YOKOHAMA, Japan, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao put forward a five-point proposal on Saturday to promote sound and fast economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.Hu made the proposal at the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which opened here Saturday afternoon.Firstly, Hu asked the APEC economies to "promote balanced growth to create conditions for long-term economic development," saying they should seek balanced growth both within a member economy and among all member economies."We should increase input to help developing members achieve their full potential and narrow the North-South gap," Hu said.He called on APEC members to move toward a more rational division of labor, a more balanced financial and trade structure, more efficient allocation of resources and more equitable sharing of benefits.Efforts by APEC members in this aspect "will contribute to balanced and coordinated global economic growth," he said.Secondly, President Hu said the APEC members should "advocate inclusive growth to boost the internal dynamism of economic development."He called on all members to focus on economic development, uphold social equity and justice and adhere to the people-first principle so that all countries, regions and groups could benefit from economic globalization and development.
BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.
