Federal safety regulators say that at least four people have died following head-on crashes in Hyundai and Kia cars in which the airbags did not deploy.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it's investigating the airbags in 2011 Hyundai Sonatas and 2012 and 2013 Kia Fortes after it received reports the devices failed to deploy in six different crashes that resulted in injuries, including the four involving fatalities.There are an estimated 425,000 cars on US roads that could be affected by the problem, according to the NHTSA's review, which was made public on Saturday.Hyundai announced earlier this month that it plans to recall 155,000 of the 2011 Sonatas due to a short circuit in the controller that deploys the airbags. But it has yet to recall the cars because it does not yet have a fix in place. The automaker said it will notify owners by April 20.Hyundai's initial recall statement did not mention that any deaths or injuries had occurred in the cars with faulty airbags. When asked about the NHTSA's investigation, it said the four accidents involving Sonatas resulted in two deaths and two injuries. It described the accidents as "rare and unique.""These accidents included a very high rate of speed and a severe offset head-on collision to the front driver side of the vehicle," said the company. "We are actively investigating what exactly causes the airbag control unit to become damaged in these specific types of accidents."Kia, which is also owned by Hyundai Motors but operates as a separate company in the US, has not announced any recalls for the Forte related to the airbag. Kia said it is working with NHTSA but that it "has not confirmed any airbag non-deployments arising from the potential chip issue."The airbags were made by ZF-TRW, according to the NHTSA filing. Spokespersons for VF-TRW did not respond to a request for comment.The largest auto recall in the nation's history involved 50 million airbags made by supplier Takata for 37 million cars across most major automakers. Those airbags, which exploded and sent shrapnel into the car's occupants, have been tied to at least 13 U.S. deaths and more than 200 injuries, according to NHTSA. 2238

Then, he lost his job and along with it, his family’s insurance.“You go down this black hole that you can’t get out of,” he said.After four months of short-term disability, Whitenmeyer applied for unemployment, but because he contracted COVID-19 so early in the pandemic, he was not able to get a test, meaning he had no proof he was actually diagnosed.It forced his wife to find temporary employment while Chad, a man who had prided himself on being the family’s breadwinner for two decades, to stay at home and provide for their kids in a different way.“It’s one of the worst feelings I’ve had about myself in my entire life,” he said. “It feels as though you can’t provide any worth to anyone around you.”The transplant patientOn June 26, 52-year-old Carl Werden was like so many other Americans: trying to stay healthy, while leading a modest life as a contractor.But on June 27, everything changed when Werden, a man with no underlying conditions, contracted the virus when he went to visit his daughter in Massachusetts.In only a matter of days, Werden’s condition deteriorated and he was sent to the hospital, a place he would remain for the next six months.“I think a lot of people think if they get sick with COVID, they’ll just be in the hospital for a few days and then they can go home, but that’s not how it works,” he said from his hospital bed over a Zoom call.For four months, Werden slipped in and out of consciousness as he battled the virus, but in October, his lungs had finally given up. Doctors said if he did not get a double lung transplant, it would only be a matter of days until he died.“Because of the COVID, there was a lot of fibrosis in my lungs and it just kept getting worse,” said Werden. “They cut me open, then they cut my rib cage in half.”Much like COVID-19, Werden does not know where those donated lungs came from. But, no longer paralyzed by fear, he is thankful to still be here.“I want people to realize there are people who are perfectly healthy, like I was, that go from being perfectly healthy to having a double lung transplant,” he said.The pastorIn San Diego, while still grappling with the effects of the pandemic, Pastor Miles McPherson, 60, was dealing with the fallout of a different virus that had taken control of the country in May.“The symbolism of how [Derek Chauvin] killed George Floyd, how I received it was, you are nothing, there’s nothing you can do about it,” said McPherson.After watching the 8 minute and 43 second video of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, McPherson saw the country come to grips with an outspoken racial reckoning that took hold of his community, as it did so many others across the country.“This was protracted, lengthened out murder,” he said. “It was as cold-hearted as I’ve seen.”McPherson, a Black man, grew up watching his father serve as a police officer, a path his son is now following as well.“There are a lot more people saying we have to do something, what that is, a lot of people don’t know, but that’s something,” he said. “And that’s the beginning of change.”McPherson is working to be a part of that change through a program called The Third Option Similarity Training. He developed it after publishing his book "The Third Option," recognizing the need for a racial reconciliation training program based on honor.The program is being used by schools, churches, and businesses, teaching people how to honor the similarities between us and use those similarities to establish connection and mutual understanding. The training provides actionable steps and creates space for conversations aimed at creating real change.The resolutionAs we come to the final chapter of 2020, it is easy to look at the negatives, but that’s not where the sights of Whitenmeyer, Werden, and McPherson lie. They are focused on a brighter future.As a stay-at-home dad, Whitenmeyer has invested in a camera where he shoots and edits videos of the daily adventures he has with his kids and posts them on YouTube.“Even though this year, for my body, physically speaking, has been the worst year of my life, I’ve gotten to do what I’ve wanted to do, which is to be a dad,” he said.Carl Werden, while still in the hospital, has not only regained the function of his new lungs, but has started walking as he progresses through rehab.“I’m thankful every day,” he said.Pastor Miles McPherson, along with many of his congregants, feel that in the face of extreme racial tension, our country is well on its way to becoming more unified.“I am always hopeful there’s going to be a victory in the end, not only for Black people, but us as a people, because we’re all one race,” he said.In a year that has left us all paralyzed in so many different ways, there are still reasons to keep moving forward, to put one foot in front of the other and work towards a better tomorrow. 5833

  

Friday brought another round of dramatic price cuts in the oil patch.US oil prices plummeted 7% and sank deeper into a bear market that has alarmed investors and made drivers around the world happy.The latest wave of selling knocked crude below a barrel for the first time since October 2017.Anxiety about oversupply and diminished demand have sent crude down by a third since it soared to a four-year high above a barrel in early October. Observers have gone from fearing 0 oil to expressing concern over why its price collapsed so quickly."The unrelenting six-week selloff has been unnerving to say the least," Michael Haigh, head of commodities research at Societe Generale, wrote to clients on Wednesday.Oil bulls are hoping OPEC and Russia come to the rescue by announcing steep production cuts at a meeting next month in Vienna. However, President Donald Trump is pressuring Saudi Arabia and OPEC not to reduce output despite the crash in prices. Traders are worried Trump's recent praise for Saudi Arabia signals the Saudis won't back a significant production cut.For the week, US oil prices are down nearly 10%.Lukman Otunuga, research analyst at FXTM, described the weekly selloff as "brutally bearish."Brent crude, the global benchmark, shed 5.5% on Friday and declined to a new 2018 low of a barrel.The meltdown was triggered by a series of developments that darkened the energy outlook. Prices soared over the summer as Trump vowed to zero out Iran's oil exports. That led Saudi Arabia, Russia and especially the United States to ramp up production. However, the Trump administration later took a softer approach on Iran sanctions to keep oil from spiking. Officials granted temporary waivers to China, India and other buyers of Iran's crude. That headfake left the oil market staring at a potential glut.At the same time, global growth fears emerged in financial markets. Economists are marking down their GDP forecasts for 2019. Germany and Japan, the world's No. 3 and 4 economies, are already in contraction. China is slowing, too. None of that is bullish for oil, which powers the world economy."Rising global crude supply coupled with worrying signs of slowing demand have written a recipe for disaster for the oil markets," Otunuga wrote to clients on Friday.The rapid collapse in oil prices caught many off guard, including hedge funds that made outsized bullish bets on crude earlier this year. FORT WORTH, Texas — The Boeing 737 Max might be flying over the East Coast before year end.All Max jets around the world have been grounded since early 2019 after two deadly crashes.American Airlines says it plans to operate one Max flight a day from Dec. 29 through Jan. 4 between Miami and New York. American is still considering how much it will use the plane after that.The airline says it will begin selling the flights on Friday.Federal regulators are currently reviewing Boeing's changes to the plane.
